"속도를 늦추라. 너무 빨리 춤추지 말라. 시간은 짧고, 음악은 머지않아 끝날 테니." (데이비드 L. 웨더포드 '더 느리게 춤추라' 중에서) ● 'N ARTIST'는 신진 작가들을 발굴하고 지원하는 격년제 전시이다. 2016년을 시작으로 올해 네 번째를 맞이하는 'N ARTIST 2023'은 최근 2년간 경남을 기반으로 활동하는 신진 작가군에 집중하였다. 경남이라는 지역을 한정하기보다 경남에서 활동하는 작가군의 범위를 넓히고자 하는 목적이 우선되었기 때문이다. 나아가 전시명 'N'에서 견지하듯 New, Neo, Non, Next 등의 다중적인 의미를 담아 실험적이고 대담하며, 기존의 고립된 사회적 틀을 벗어나려는 신진작가들의 활발한 활동을 지원하고자 하는 목적도 함께했다. ● 『N ARTIST 2023: 더 느리게 춤추라』는 각자의 자리에서 '느리게 춤추고 있는' 다섯 명의 작가들을 소개하고자 한다. 데이비드 L. 웨더포드는 신장이식 수술에 실패하고 죽음의 문턱에서 현재의 순간에 대한 소중함을 인식하며 '더 느리게 춤추라'를 집필했다. 이번 전시에서 볼 수 있는 다섯 작가의 예술 세계는 이 한 편의 시가 일깨워 주는 여러 의미를 되짚어 보게 할 것이다. ● 미래를 위해, 목표를 위해, 치열하게 경쟁할 수밖에 없는 시대적 상황 속에서 현재의 삶과 가치를 조금 느리게 바라보는 것은 쉽지 않다. 그러나, 7개월이 넘는 기간 동안 만나온 다섯 작가들은 그 만남과 이해가 깊어질수록 예술과 삶 모두를 즐기며 살아가는 이들이 분명했다. 특히 젊은 세대이기에 단단한 미래를 위해 현재를 다져야 하는 청년이기에 예술을 병행하는 삶이 더욱 고될 법도 한데, 이들은 지금도 예술을 놓지 않고 있다. 『N ARTIST 2023: 더 느리게 춤추라』는 이렇게 쉽지 않은 길을 선택한 다섯 작가의 예술 세계를 담고 있다. 그들은 저마다의 방식으로 세상을 기록하고, 기억하고 염원하며, 각자의 답을 찾아가는 작가들이다. 이들이 전하는 이야기를 통해 전시에 방문한 관객 모두가 오늘의 순간을 되새기며 그 의미를 경험하는 시간이 되길 바란다.

김예림은 다양한 이미지들을 통해 인간이 느끼는 감정과 관계의 기억, 그리고 이것의 모순된 상황들을 말하고자 한다. 사랑, 권태, 공허, 그리움, 연민과 같은 수많은 감정들은 인간관계와 개인의 내면에서 비롯되는데, 이는 서로가 뒤섞이며 모순 가득한 모호함으로 이어진다. 작가는 이렇게 여러 층위로 얽혀진 감정들을 다양한 이미지로 펼쳐 내는데, 이때 병치된 이미지들은 서로 간의 상호작용을 통해 또 다른 의미들을 발생시킨다. ● "가까운 이는 떠났고, 나는 여전히 살아있다." (작가노트 중에서). 작가는 이와 같은 괴리감과 상실감을 연인, 가족, 표정, 눈빛 등으로 제시하며 새로운 영원성을 불어 넣는다. 원본의 시간, 이를 수집하는 순간들, 화면으로 옮기는 시간, 관람하는 관객의 시간, 이미지들 사이의 시간, 작품명으로 제안하는 또 다른 시간. 이렇게나 다양한 시간(성)들은 작가와 작품, 관객을 통해 새롭게 태어난다. 2019년 이전의 작업들이 주로 연인과 사랑의 모호한 감정들에서 시작되었다면, 최근의 작업들은 가족의 이야기가 더해졌다. 무작위로 수집하던 이미지들은 가족 앨범 속에서의 수집으로 연결되었다. 이번 전시에서 선보이는 다양한 시간과 감정들의 중첩은 작가의 의식과 무의식의 조우이며, 관객들의 또 다른 찰나이자 영원한 순간들로 함께할 것이다.

이혁은 자신이 습득해온 사실주의적 이미지들을 지우고 긁고 뭉개고 새롭게 그리는 반복 행위를 통해 (강제)이주자들의 이중 정체성에 대한 내면, 권력과 이데올로기가 생산하는 사회구조적 모순을 드러내고자 한다. 작가가 느낀 이질감, 소외감, 상실감, 그리움과 정체성의 혼란은 역사적 맥락 아래에서 새롭게 형성해 나가는 자신만의 방법론 아래에서 드러나게 된다. 작가의 작업은 자신이 느껴온 심리적 상황이라는 지극히 내면적인 이야기에서 출발했지만, 이는 곧 우리 사회의 단면이자 극복해야 할 현실이다. 이어 작가가 제안하는 절대적 이데올로기가 부재하는 공간, 언제나 그리운 이를 만날 수 있는 염원의 산수는 사실 우리 모두가 간절히 꿈꿔온 또 다른 세상이 아닐까. ● "소멸한다는 것은 절대적 진리가 파괴되고 사라진 후 비로소 드러나는 가치를 담고 있다." (작가노트 중에서). 작가는 모두가 믿고 있는 절대적 진리가 무엇인지, 모두가 추구해야 할 진정한 가치는 무엇인지 되묻고 있다. 부서지지 않을 것 같은 강력한 이데올로기, 끝없이 피어나는 갖가지 모순들을 어떻게 바라보고 극복할 것인가. 작가는 자신의 예술적 행위를 통해 조금 더 나은 세계를 꿈꾸며 혼란한 내면과 현실을 극복해 낸다. 이를 바라보는 관객 역시 각자가 꿈꾸는 삶의 진실을 만나보길 바란다.

정현준은 우리가 가지는 편견과 혐오 이면의 소외된 자와 이들의 이야기에 주목한다. 자의적 판단에 의한 모순의 불편함은 우리가 살아가는 세상 속 사람들의 이야기에서 비롯된다. 작가는 사적인 이야기, 경험과 일상에서 부서졌던 편견과 혐오 이면의 가려진 진실을 추적해 나아간다. 작가가 수집한 이러한 이야기들은 은유적으로 구성된 영상으로 제시되는데 이를 경험하는 관객들은 현실과 은유가 혼재된 화면 속에서 진실을 찾아가게 된다. ● "나에게 작업이란 불확실한 것을 확인해 나가는 과정이다." (작가 인터뷰 중에서). 불편함에 대한 질문과 이에 대한 답 찾기의 과정은 작가를 비롯하여 우리 모두가 찾아야 할 진실이 아닐까. 작업에 있어 대상이 수단화되는 것을 경계하는 작가의 의지는 그가 추구하는 예술의 목적과 일치한다. 작가가 만나는 다양한 이들의 이야기는 곧 우리가 혹은 사회가 놓치고 있는 또 다른 모습이며, 이를 인식하고 답을 향해 나아갈 때 비로소 불편함을 소거할 수 있을 것이다. 이번 전시에서 작가는 '배달노동자'들에 대한 이야기를 들려주고자 한다. 이들을 향한 불편함과 진실, 편견과 혐오는 무엇에서 비롯되었는지. 가려진 진실은 무엇인지. 모두가 귀 기울여 이들의 이야기를 들어보길 바란다.

조현수는 자연적 재료에서 발견한 생명력과 에너지, 이들의 순환에서 비롯된 가치와 우연적 상황들을 회화로 표현한다. 작가의 성실하고 집요한 실험, 연구, 관찰하는 태도는 곧 그의 작품에서 보여지는 중첩된 이미지로 치환된다. 실제 삶 속에서도 실험과 관찰을 즐기는 작가의 태도는 한국화의 전통적 매체와 새로운 만남을 이끌어 냈다. 금속 재료인 동의 산화와 부식, 전통 재료 닥과 결합할 때 형성되는 얼룩과 흔적, 빛과 시간에 따른 잠재적 변화들은 (자연)재료 간의 상호작용을 통해, 작가와 재료 간의 만남과 관계를 통해 새롭게 피어난다. 작가는 이렇듯 지난한 과정과 반복된 행위를 통해 진정한 자신과의 대화를 경험하는 듯하다. 자신이 추구하는 것, 자연과의 만남, 이를 통한 치유와 에너지를 새롭게 만들어가고 있는 것이다. ● "그 어떤 것들 보다 나를 불안하게 하지만, 유일하게 포기할 수 없는 것이 바로 작업이었다." (작가 인터뷰 중에서). 작업을 통해 끝없는 성찰과 치유와 행복을 경험하는 작가의 태도는 자연이 주는 모종의 위로와 치유의 공간으로 관객을 맞이한다. 자연에서 경험했던 따뜻한 위로처럼, 작가의 집요한 작업 과정으로 쌓여있는 다양한 층의 이야기들을 통해 이를 바라보는 관객 모두가 자신만의 풍경을 만나보길 바란다.

한혜림의 작업은 사람들과의 관계와 이에 대한 기억, 주변 사람들에 대한 애정과 관심에서 비롯된다. 일상 속에서, 같이하는 삶 속에서, 존재하지만 희미해진 혹은 부재하는 사람들에 대한 흔적과 교감, 정서와 에너지를 예술 속에 담아낸다. 실제 작가의 삶과 태도는 함께하는 예술 실천으로 드러나는데, 특히 다양한 사람들과 협업하는 과정을 통해 자신이 추구하는 가치와 염원을 표현해 내는 것이다. 이러한 작가의 작업들은 서정적인 은유와 지극히 현실적인 삶의 단면이 중첩되어 균형 있고 조화롭게 드러난다. ● "기억해야 할 말, 바라봐야 할 곁을 통해 같이 사는 삶과 행복에 대한 염원을 담고자 한다." (작가노트 중에서). 끊임없이 많은 사람들과 소통하고 교감하는 작가의 태도는 그의 예술에서 드러나는 다양한 가치와 함께 그 의미를 더해간다. 희미해져가는 삶의 유한함을 예술로 기억하고 영원한 에너지로 표현해 내고자 하는 작가의 의지는 많은 이들에게 공감과 위안으로 다가갈 것이다. 이번 전시에서는 본인의 의지와 관계없이 움직임이 둔화된, 부재하는 이의 흔적과 에너지를 찾고자 한다. 몸짓과 파형으로 표현된 다양한 에너지는 모두가 기억하고 바라봐야 할 우리 곁의 이야기일 것이다. ● 마지막으로 전시를 경험하는 모두에게 몇 가지를 전하고자 한다. 이는 전시를 바라보는 관객, 참여한 다섯 작가들, 나아가 우리 모두를 위한 당부이다. ● 먼저 관객에게 전하고자 하는 것은 각자의 '편견'을 버리고, 작가들의 예술을 '있는 그대로' 볼 수 있는 마음가짐이다. '경남에서 활동하는 젊은 작가들'이라는 정체성 앞에서 우리는 무엇을 보고자 할까. 보고자 하는 것을 마음에 두고, 혹은 어떨 것이라고 먼저 설정한 상상 속에서 바라보지는 않는가. 전시가 담고 있는 다섯 이야기는 각 작가들의 고민과 노력과 삶에서 피어난 각각의 예술이다. 진심을 가득 담아 전하는 이들의 이야기를 '편견' 없이 '있는 그대로' 경험하길 바란다. ● 두 번째는 참여한 다섯 작가들에게 전하는 응원과 바람이다. 지금도 충분히 '느리게 춤추고 있는' 이들은 각자가 할 수 있는 최선의 노력 아래 고군분투하며 삶과 예술을 병행하고 있다. 느리게, 그리고 진실 되게 자신의 예술을 이어가는 이들에게 깊은 격려와 응원을 전하고 싶다. 더불어, 때론 힘든 현실 앞에서 조급한 마음 앞에서 남들보다 빠르게 가야 할지 망설여지는 순간에는 '조금은 더 느리더라도' 흔들리지 않고 자신의 길을 이어나가기를 당부하고자 한다. ● 이어 우리 모두에게 함께 전하고자 하는 것은, 급박하고 치열한 현실 앞에서 조금은 느리게, 조금 더 느리게 현실의 가치와 오늘의 의미를 되새기며 순간에 보다 집중하길 바라는 당부이다. 모든 노래가 끝나기 전에 속도를 늦추고 음악에 귀 기울이기를 바란다. ■ 경남도립미술관

"You better slow down Don't dance so fast. Time is short. The music won't last." (From David L. Weatherford's Slow Dance) ● N ARTIST is a biennial exhibition to discover and support emerging artists. Marking its fourth year after its start in 2016, N ARTIST 2023 focuses on emerging artists that have been active in Gyeongnam(South Gyeongsang Province) region for the past two years. This is because the main goal of the exhibition is to expand the range of artists working in the region rather than confining the geographical scope to Gyeongnam. Furthermore, as the alphabet "N" in the title indicates, it has such multiple meanings as "New," "Neo," "Non," and "Next." It implies how the exhibition seeks to support a thriving career for the budding artists that are experimental and bold in their approach and strive to break out of isolated social conventions. ● N ARTIST 2023: Slow Dance introduces five artists doing their "slow dance" in their own place. David L. Weatherford wrote Slow Dance after his failed kidney transplant, recognizing the importance of the present moment at the threshold of death. The world of art for the five artists will guide the audience to reflect on the multiple meanings of this poem. ● In such a competitive world where we are all racing for our future and goals, it is not easy to slow down in reflecting on the current life and values. However, the more we met and understood the five artists over the course of seven months, the more it became clear that they were truly enjoying both art and life. True, doing art in a life stage when they are supposed to lay a solid foundation for their future as the young generation would be even more challenging, but they still hold onto art even today. N ARTIST 2023: Slow Dance touches upon the five artists' view of art as those that chosen to tread on this not-so-easy path. They keep track of, remember and long for the world, and search for answers in their own ways. We hope that their stories could help the audience to ponder upon the present moment, and experience the meanings behind. ● Kim Yerim seeks to speak about human emotions, memories of relationships, and contradictory circumstances thereof by using wide-ranging images. Diverse emotions such as love, boredom, emptiness, longing, and compassion arise from relationships and the inner world of individuals, leading to a complicated mix of emotions and contradictory ambiguity. Kim unfolds these layers of emotions in diverse images where the juxtaposed images interact with each other to generate different meanings. ● "Those that are close to me are gone, and I am still alive." – From her artist note. Kim presents such a sense of disparity and loss as a lover, a family member, a facial expression, and eyes, and imbues it with a fresh new permanence. The time when the original scenes took place and the moments to collect the original images, the time of transferring them to canvas, the time spent by the audience to view her work, the time between the images, and another layer of time her work title suggests – all these various layers of time (or temporality) are reborn through her, her work and the audience. If her oeuvre prior to 2019 was mainly about lovers and the ambiguous feelings of love, her recent works have added on stories about family. Randomly collected images were connected to her collection in family albums. The superimposition of various times and emotions presented in this exhibition is an encounter between her conscious and subconscious minds, and will accompany the viewers as another layer of fleeting and eternal moments. ● Lee Hyeok intends to reveal the social and structural contradictions produced by power and ideology as well as the inner world of dual identities of (forced) migrants through the repetitive act of erasing, scratching, crushing, and redrawing the realistic images he has acquired. Lee's sense of heterogeneity, alienation, loss, longing, and confusion of identity come to be revealed under his own methodology newly formed in historical context. His work begins with a story of his deep inner world in his own psychological circumstance, but it is also a facet of our society and a reality that needs to be overcome. A space lacking in an absolute ideology Lee proposes, and "mountain and water" in landscape on longing for those one mises all the time would be another world we all have desperately dreamed of. ● "The act of perishing contains values that are only revealed after the destruction and disappearance of absolute truth." - From his artist note. Lee poses questions on the absolute truths that everyone believes in and the genuine values everyone should strive for. How are we going to view and overcome powerful ideologies that seem to be unbreakable, and various contradictions that bloom endlessly? Lee dreams of a better world through his artistic act, and gets the better of the inner world and reality of confusion. We hope that the viewers will also meet the truth of a life they dream of. ● Jung Hyeongjun pays attention to those marginalized and their stories behind our prejudice and hatred. The discomfort of contradiction caused by arbitrary judgment is derived from the stories of people in the world we live in. Jung traces the hidden truth behind prejudice and hatred which have been shattered in personal stories, experiences and everyday life. These stories collected by Jung are presented in a metaphorically configured video, and the audience experiencing it would search for the truth in a screen where reality and metaphor are combined. ● "Doing art for me is a process of confirming the unknown." – From his artist note. A process of asking questions on discomfort and seeking for answers is a truth that all of us, including artists, need to find. Jung's willingness to be wary of instrumentalizing targets such as people and places in his work is consistent with the purpose of art he pursues. Stories of people from different walks of life Jung encounters are another facet we or the society have missed, and only when this is perceived and answers are pursued, can discomfort be removed. In this exhibition, Jung seeks to tell the story of "delivery workers." We hope that the audience could listen to the stories of these people: where did the discomfort and truth, prejudice and hatred towards them come from?; and what are the truths behind? ● Jo Hyeonsu expresses in her paintings the vitality and energy found in natural materials, and values and accidental circumstances derived from their circulation. Jo's sincere and persistent attitude in experimentation, research, and observation is soon translated into the superimposed images seen in her works. Her attitude of enjoying experimentation and observation in real life has led to a new encounter with the traditional medium of Korean painting. The oxidation and corrosion of copper as a metallic material, the stains and marks that form when combined with fiber of Dak (paper mulberry), and potential changes that occur with light and time bloom anew through the interaction between the (natural) materials and the encounter and relationship between Jo and the materials. It seems as if Jo experiences a true dialogue with herself through these tedious processes and repeated acts. She is creating what she seeks, an encounter with nature, healing and energy through it. ● "My work is the one that unsettles me more than anything else, but it is the only thing I can't give up." – From her interview. Her attitude of experiencing endless reflection, healing, and happiness through her work welcomes the audience into a space of consolation and healing. We hope that each and every audience could come across their own scenery through her multi-layered storytelling stacked up in her relentless work process, just like the warm comfort she felt in Mother Nature. ● Han Hyerim's work stems from her relationships with people and her related memories, and her affection and interest in the people around her. She pours in the traces, interactions, emotions, and energies of people whose presence is faded although they are still present in her daily or interactive life, and those that are absent. Her attitude is manifested in the joint practice of art, especially in the process of collaborating with various people to express her values and aspirations. The works of these artists are revealed in a balanced and harmonious manner as lyrical metaphors and starkly realistic aspects of life overlap. ● "I want to convey my desire for a life of living together with others and happiness. This is something I do through the words to I have remember and those that surround me for me to take care of." – From her artist note. Her attitude of constantly communicating and interacting with many people amplifies a variety of values exposed in her art along with their meanings. Her willingness to remember the fading finitude of life through art and express it with eternal energy will resonate and comfort the soul of many people. In this exhibition, she seeks to find the traces and energy of the absent whose movements have been slowed down regardless of their will. The various energies expressed in gestures and waveforms are stories happening near us that we all should remember and adhere to. ● Lastly, we would like to deliver a few reminders to everyone that experiences the exhibition. This is a call to action for the audience, for the five artists involved, and for all of us. ● The first thing we would like to convey to the audience is a mindset of letting go of their own "prejudice" and appreciate the art of the artists "as it is." What do we want to see from the identity of "young artists based in Gyeongnam"? Don't we tend to view their works in a predetermined mindset or in a presupposed imagination on what they would be like? The five stories in the exhibition are art in their own way that have blossomed out of their own hard thoughts, efforts, and life. We want the audience to experience their stories as they are, without judgment, as they are told from the bottom of their heart. ● Second, we would like to ask for the audience to extend their encouragement and support to the five artists. These are artists doing their fairly "slow dance" even now, trying their best to make a living with art. We would like to convey our deepest encouragement and support to them as they carry on their art career slowly, yet genuinely. Moreover, in moments of pressure to have a faster pace in life than others, we would like to ask them to continue on with their path although they might be "a little slow in their dance." it is 'a little slower' in the moments when they feel impatient in the face of difficult realities and hesitate to go faster than others. ● We would also like to share with all is a call to slow down, to be a little slower in the face of the urgent and fierce reality, to be more present in the moment, to reflect on the value and meaning of the present day.
