시간의 항해 The Voyage of Time

『심문섭: 시간의 항해』는 경남 통영 출신의 조각가 심문섭(1943~ )이 60여 년 전 뱃길을 따라 시작했던 오랜 예술항해 중 고향 경남에서 처음으로 닻을 내리는 대형 회고전이다. 1970년대 국제적인 주목을 받았던 그의 초기 실험 작품부터 각 시기를 대표하는 조각, 드로잉 그리고 2000년대 이후부터 현재까지 몰입 중인 회화 연작에 이르기까지 200여 점에 달하는 작품과 아카이브 자료를 집중 조명한다. 이 중에는 국내에 소개되지 않았던 미발표 작품들이 다수 포함되어 있다.

작가는 지금껏 조각, 설치, 사진, 사진드로잉, 회화에 이르기까지 다양한 매체와 재료를 아우르며 장르의 카테고리를 자유롭게 넘나들면서도 작업에 있어 일관되고 뚜렷한 방향성을 유지해왔다. 심문섭의 초기 조각 작품은 아르테 포베라(Arte Povera), 미니멀리즘(Minimalism) 일본 모노하(物派, Mono-ha)와의 영향 관계 속에서 논의되기도 하지만, 국제적 감각과 시대상을 공유하면서도 한국적인 정서와 문화를 투영하여 자신만의 독자적인 작품세계를 구축하였다고 평가받는다. 특히 태어나고 자란 경남 통영의 아름다운 바다와 자연환경은 작가의 자연관에 큰 영향을 미치며 몸속 깊이 각인되어 현재까지도 작업의 원천이 되고 있다.

심문섭은 "조각가로서 조각이라는 매체 고유의 고정관념에 반하기 위해 끊임없이 도전하였고 이를 자신의 주요한 조형의 지표로 삼아왔다."고 언급한 바 있다. 전시 제목 '시간의 항해'는 작가의 작품에 공통으로 내재된 시간성과 장소성, 진행형의 복합적인 작업 형식을 뜻하기도 하지만, 바다를 중심에 둔 채 결코 한곳에 정박하지 않고 부단히 새로운 의미의 흐름을 담아내기 위해 고군분투했던 작가의 작업 태도를 함축한다. 심문섭은 완결된 오브제의 형상이 아닌 물질의 시간성을 내포하는 과정으로써의 작업을 추구하며 미지의 열린 세계를 지향해 왔다. 관람객 역시 시간 여행자가 되어 작가의 예술항해를 가로질러 그 시적 만남에 동참하길 기대한다.

전시는 1, 2층 전시장 4개의 섹션으로 구성되어 심문섭의 '반(反)조각'을 향한 도전적이고 진취적인 작업 여정을 효과적으로 전달한다. 먼저 3가지 섹션 주제 '장을 열다: 관계에서 제시로', '자연의 감각: 무한의 질서', '반(反)조각의 확장: 물성에서 회화까지'는 전체 작업을 관통하는 몇 가지 주요한 키워드를 기반으로 설정하였다. 이는 어느 한 시기의 특징에 국한되지 않고 전 작업의 궤적을 아울러 적용되는 것이기에 작품을 이해하는 길잡이가 되어 줄 것이다.

그리고 아카이브 섹션에서는 작가의 작품세계에 보다 면밀히 다가설 수 있도록 작가연보를 비롯한 다양한 기록물과 자료들, 드로잉 작품을 보여준다. 이번 전시는 특히 모든 전시장에서 회화 연작을 볼 수 있는데, '반(反)조각' 정신의 확장 개념으로써 조각과의 상관관계를 짚어보는데 의미가 있다. 전시를 통해 한국 현대조각의 경향을 주도했던 작가, 심문섭의 예술 행적이 현대미술의 흐름 속에서 어떤 위치를 차지하며 반영, 전개되어왔는지를 살펴보고 그 의미와 가치를 다시 심도 있게 바라보는 기회가 되기를 바란다. ■ 경남도립미술관

SHIM MOON SEUP: The Voyage of Time is a large-scale retrospective exhibition of sculptor Shim Moon Seup (1943~ ) from Tongyeong in Gyeongnam Province. It is his first show to be anchored in his hometown of Gyeongnam in the middle of his long artistic voyage that began more than 60 years ago. It sheds a light on his nearly 200 works and archival materials, ranging from early experimental works that attracted international attention in the 1970s to sculptures, drawings, and paintings that are representative of each period, as well as painting series he has been immersed in from the 2000s to the present. The exhibits also include a number of his unreleased works that have never been introduced in Korea. ● Shim once said, "As a sculptor, I have constantly challenged the stereotypes inherent in the medium of sculpture, which has been a key belief in my figurative work." The Voyage of Time as the exhibition's title implies not only the composite form of his work involving temporality, placeness, and progression penetrating in his oeuvre but also his working attitude of striving to center on new meanings of flows without anchoring himself in one place in the middle of the sea. Shim has pursued an open world of the unknown by trying to produce works as a process of embodying temporality of materials, rather than a finished shape of objects. It is expected that the audience could be a part of the poetic encounter by crossing his artistic voyage as time travelers. ● The exhibition consists of four sections on the first and second floors to effectively convey Shim's pioneering and progressive work of "anti-sculpture," which is to challenge the traditional concepts of sculpture. These themes are not limited to the characteristics of any one period, but apply to the entire trajectory of his oeuvre, and will guide the audience to better understand his works. ● The archive section, meanwhile, presents various documents and materials including chronology of Shim and his drawing works so that the audience could take a closer look at his works. In particular, a series of his paintings can be seen in all the exhibition halls throughout the exhibition, which explores the relations between painting and sculpture as an extension of his ethos of "anti-sculpture." We hope that the exhibition will provide an opportunity to examine the positioning of the artistic practice of Shim Moon Seup, an artist who led the trend of contemporary Korean sculpture, and how it has been reflected and developed in the context of contemporary art, and also to take a deeper look at its meaning and value. ■ GYEONGNAM ART MUSEUM
