낭만의 부재 Absence of romance

정보의 홍수일까. 무관심이 만들어낸 비극일까. 우리 주위에는 참으로 안타까운 일들이 많이 일어난다. 생활고에 시달려 생을 마감한 세 모녀, 청년층의 고독사, 유난히 많아진 듯 한 대형 사고들. 어렸을 때는 몇 년 만에 일어날 법한 사건사고들이 하루가 멀다 하고 들려온다. 어느 덧 낭만과는 거리가 먼 세상이 된 것만 같다. 안타까운 현실을 바라본 세상을 향한 예술가의 시선을 '젊은 날의 우리' 라는 작품으로 이야기해 보았다. 지금 이 시간들을 기억하고, 소외되는 이들을 상기시켰으면 하는 고요한 외침을 추락하는 비행기로 설정하여 정적인 화면 안에 그려 넣었다. 이전 작품 「흙길 위」가 과거를 딛고 현재와 희망을 제시한 작품이라면, 「젊은 날의 우리」는 현재를 헤쳐 나가야 하는 우리의 모습을 무덤덤하게 바라본 나의 시선이다. ■ 김성호

Is it a flood of information? Is it a tragedy created by indifference? A lot of sad things happen around us. Three mothers and daughters who ended their lives suffering from the hardships of life, lonely deaths of young people, and large-scale accidents that seemed to be exceptionally common. When I was young, incidents and accidents that would have happened in a few years are heard every day. It seems that the world has become far from romance. I tried to talk about the artist's gaze toward the world looking at the sad reality through the work of 'we in our youth'. A silent cry to remember these times and remind those who are marginalized is set as a falling plane and drawn on a static screen. If the previous work 「On a Dirt Road」 was a work that presented the present and hope by overcoming the past, 「We in Our Young Days」 is my gaze looking at us calmly as we have to overcome the present. ■ KIMSUNGHO
