내게 새로운 경험을 ● 내가 그림을 그리는 이유는 혁명적인 경험을 하기 위해서이다. 모험이라고 바꿔 말해도 좋을 혁명적 경험은 합리적인 삶의 비전과 동시에 무의식이나 꿈의 힘만이 가능하게 하는 비전간의 균형을 유지하게 한다. 나는 예상치 못한 것과 기이한 것, 무시당하고 관습에 얽매이지 않는 것 등으로부터 마법의 힘을 얻으며 기묘한 아름다움을 찾는다. 내 작업의 핵심에는 부과된 가치와 규범에 도전하려는 의지와 자유 추구가 있다. 따라서 내 작업의 방식은 말하기나 글쓰기는 물론 미디어나 몸짓의 사용 등 어떤 방식으로든 사고의 실제 기능을 표현하도록 제안하는 순수한 심령 자동화라고 말할 수 있다. 이성에 의해 행사되는 어떠한 통제도 없고 모든 미학적, 도덕적 선입견에서 벗어난 사고의 받아쓰기 등을 행하며 무의식적인 마음에서 아이디어와 이미지를 잠금 해제하기 위해 자동 그리기 또는 자동 글쓰기를 사용한다. 때로는 꿈의 세계나 숨겨진 심리적 긴장을 묘사하고자 하며 이를 위해 신비주의, 고대 문화, 토착 예술과 지식에서 대안적 현실을 상상하는 방법으로 영감을 얻는다.

마음의 해방과 예술적 표현의 해방을 향한 이 열망은 때로는 정치적 자유를 추구함을 의미하기도 한다. 따라서 나는 4차례에 걸친 회화 개인전 「New Paintings」, 「이웃」, 「(수상한) 이웃」, 「남용되는 금기(禁忌)산업」과 「서사(敍事)를 위한 복수(複數)의 추상」, 「동시성」, 「실(絲)」과 같은 영화, 뉴미디어, 퍼포먼스 등의 전시를 통해 정치적 행동주의를 실천하기도 했다. ● 하지만, 무엇보다도 나를 가장 몰입하게 하는 것은 내 체력의 범위를 넘어서는 큰 그림에 대한 도전이다. 내 키의 서너 배를 넘어서는 크기 이상의 페인팅 작업은 내가 그림을 그리는 이유인 혁명적인 경험을 비로소 가능하게하기 때문이다. ■ 신진식

Give me a chance to try something new ● The reason I paint is to have a revolutionary experience. It strikes a balance between a rational life vision and a vision that only the power of the unconscious or dream can make possible. I find bizarre beauty, drawing magical powers from the unexpected and the weird, the ignored and the unconventional. At the core of my work is the will to challenge imposed values ​​and norms and the pursuit of freedom. Thus, it can be said that the way of my work is pure psychic automatism, which proposes to express the actual functioning of thought in some way, not only in speaking or writing, but also in the use of media or gestures. Without any control exercised by reason, dictation of thought, etc. free of all aesthetic and moral preconceived notions, using automatic drawing or automatic writing to unlock ideas and images from the unconscious mind. Sometimes I want to depict dream worlds or hidden psychological tensions, drawing inspiration from occultism, ancient culture, and indigenous art and knowledge by imagining alternative realities. This desire for liberation of the mind and liberation of artistic expression sometimes means the pursuit of political freedom. Therefore, I practiced political activism through four solo exhibitions 「New Paintings」, 「Neighbor」, 「(Shadowy) Neighbours」, 「Taboo industries being abused」, short film 「Multiple abstractions for narrative」, new media art exhibition 「Synched, Unsynched」, and solo performance art exhibition 「Strand」. ● But, above all else, what makes me most immersed is the challenge of the big picture that goes beyond the scope of my physical strength.
