인드라망 Indra's Net

젊은 시절 작가는 '인간이란 무엇인가?'에 점착하여 인도에 가려고 하였다. 그러나 인도에는 가지 못하고 그에 대한 답을 스스로 알기까지 그녀가 가지게 된 생각은 삶과 분리된 이론이나 명상 속에서 찾은 것이 아니라 사람과의 관계로부터 시작하여 관계를 처리하는 연속적 상황에서 인간의 의미를 알게 되었다고 한다. 작가는 이번 전시를 통해 '나는 누구인가?'를 스스로 질문하면서 나를 비롯한 삼라만상이 거대한 그물의 구슬에 투영되어 서로를 비추어간다는 불교의 화엄경에 나오는'인드라망'을 이해하게 된다. 즉 자신의 구슬은 사방 모든 구슬을 비추고, 수많은 구슬 하나하나가 다시 반사되어 나를 향해 비추어 모든 것이 하나로 연결된다는 것이다.

정해정 작가가 작업을 통해 찾으려고 하는 것은 자신에 대한 고찰인데 신체의 유기적 관계에서 몸을 이루는 많은 조직, 요소들이 서로 긴밀히 연관되어 있음을 확인하게 되고, 인간의 외적인 면을 그리면서 동시에 내면을 그리고 있다. 인드라망과 유사한 설(說)에 人을 파자하면 두 사람이 서로 기대어 서 있는 것과 같이 인간은 혼자서 살 수 없는 존재라는 것과 불교의 연기설(緣紀說)에서 모든 현상에는 원인과 결과가 있으며 이것이 있으면 그것이 있다는 현상의 상호 의존 관계를 말하고 있다. 이렇듯 '인간이란 무엇인가?'의 질문에 대한 답을 인드라라는 상징적 그물에서 상대성으로 이해한 듯하다.

몸은 정신과 뗄 수 없는 관계에 있고 정신은 몸에 의해 지배를 받기도 한다. 작가의 작품에는 신체 일부분을 크게 그리거나 몸 윤곽선 안에 꽃과 무늬를 그려 넣고, 신체를 변형하여 표현했는데 몸에 의해 변화하는 정신, 정신에 영향받는 신체를 표현한 것이다. 이는 나와 관계된 것의 투영이며 인드라망 안에 갇힌 수많은 자기 자신일 수 있다. ● 세잔은 파리 생활을 접고 고향의 생트빅투아르 산을 연작할 때 화면분할이라는 개념을 화폭에 담았다. 캔버스를 n 등분한 후 분할된 사각형에 확대된 풍경을 넣고 다시 분할 된 화면을 동시에 한 화면에 담았다. 이것은 사진에서 줌인, 줌아웃 기능을 회화에 대입한 것으로 '줌인' 된 여러 개의 화면이 합쳐져서 하나의 큰 화면이 되는 것이다.

마찬가지로 작가 정해정은 신체 일부분을 크게 그리고, 몸을 이루는 수많은 요소를 작은 블록 같은 사각형으로 대체하여 화면을 총합하고 동시에 해체 시킴으로 자아의 이미지를 전혀 다른 물적 존재로 환원하여 표현하였다. 이는 신체를 '줌인' 하여 현상을 분산시켜 등분한 조각들을 하나의 화면에 나타낸 것으로 세잔의 그림을 연상시킨다. ● 정해정 작가의 '인드라망'은 그동안 살아온 작가의 내면이거나 인간 본성에 대한 질문으로 그 답을 작품 속에서 채워나가는 삶의 여정이다. ■ 박인기

대학 졸업 이후 먹고사는데 바빠 그림 작업을 거의 하지 못했다. 많은 시간이 흘렀지만 내 마음속에는 여전히 그림에 대한 열정이 남아 있었다. 이번 전시를 준비하면서 마치 수십 년간 밀린 숙제를 풀어가듯 기쁜 마음으로 거침없이 작업에 몰두할 수 있었다. 외롭고 어둡게만 여겨졌던 나의 길. 그동안 지나온 나의 길을 회상하며 평면의 캔버스 위에 선을 그렸다. 즐겁고, 슬프고, 고마웠던 기억들에 명암을 넣고, 감정의 색깔을 입히면서 마침내 나는 '관계'라는 입체와 마주하게 되었다. 혼자 걸어 온줄 만 알았던 그 길에는 바다가 있었고, 나무가 있었고, 노을이 있었다. ● '인드라망' 나 자신과 더불어, 나타나고 사라지고 변하는 모든 사물은 마치 자성을 지닌 것처럼 내가 대처하는 행동 양식에 따라 상황은 반응해왔다. ● 나의 작업은 주변에 대한 기록이며 동시에 나의 자서전이기도 하다. 그동안 무엇을 향해 가고 있었는지, 잃어버린 것들은 무엇이었는지 이제는 조금 보일 듯하다. 돌고 돌아 여기에 왔다. 앞으로 펼쳐질 관계라는 그물에 엮여 함께 빛을 만들어갈 주변 모든 것들이 새삼 신비롭고 소중하게 다가온다. ■ 정해정

When she was young, she wanted to go to India, immersed in the question of 'What is human?' but she didn't have a chance to go there. Until she realized the answer by herself later, her thoughts were not found in a theory or meditation separate from life, but in the continuous situation of dealing with relationships, starting from relationships with people. Through this exhibition, the artist asks herself, "Who am I?" and understands the meaning of 'Indra's Net' in which the world, including herself, is projected onto the beads of a huge net to illuminate each other. In other words, it means that one's beads illuminate all the beads in all directions, and each and every bead is reflected back toward me, and eventually everything leads to one. Hae Jung feels her own existence through her works. In the organic relationship of the body, as most of organs and elements that make up the body are closely related to each other, so she draws the external side of humans and the inner side simultaneously. When you dig up the Chinese character '人' which means a human being, it is a pictogram in which the two lean on each other. This shows that humans cannot live alone. In the law of causality (緣起法)' in Buddhism, All phenomena have causes and effects. It refers to the interdependence of the phenomenon that If this one exists, there should be that one. As such, she seems to reach the answer to the question of "What is human being?" as 'relativity' that can be found in 'Indra's Net'. ● The body is in an inseparable relationship with the mind and the mind is often dominated by the body. In her paintings, a part of the body is largely emphasized, or filled with flowers and patterns, or expressed the body by deformation, as it is, this shows a drawing of a mind that is changed by the body, and the body is affected by the mind vice versa. This is a projection of things related to oneself, and it can also be numerous egos trapped in 'Indra's Net'. ● Paul Cezanne put the concept of screen division in the canvas when he quit living in Paris and produced a series of Mount Saint-Victoir in his hometown. After dividing the canvas equally into n-times, he put the enlarged landscape in the divided square and displayed the divided screens on one screen simultaneously. This is a substitution of zoom-in and zoom-out functions in the photography and several 'zoom-in' screens are combined to form a large screen. Likewise, artist Jung, Hae Jung drew a specific part of the body large and replaced numerous elements that make up the body with squares such as small blocks to sum up the screens and dismantle them at the same time so that the artist could express the image of the self by reducing it to a completely different physical being. It is reminiscent of Cezanne's painting by showing the pieces divided by 'zoom in' the body on a single screen. ● Hae Jung's 'Indra's Net' is a life Journey that fills up her paintings with the answers of "What is Human?" which is reflected by her inner part or human nature. ■ Park, In-Gi

After graduating from college, my daily life hindered me from painting. Though many years have passed by, the passion for painting has still breathed in my heart. While preparing for this exhibition, it felt like I was solving homework that I had been behind for decades. I was able to immerse myself in the work with joy. Path of loneliness and darkness. Recalling the path so far, I drew line on the canvas. Good memories, sad memories, thankful memories...As I drew the light and darkness of memory, and the color of emotion. I finally encountered a multi-dimensional object called 'relationship'. There was a sea, a tree, and a sunset on the road where I thought I only walked alone. ● Everything that appeared, disappeared, and changed along with myself seemed to have magnetism. The situation also reacted according to each coping behavior. ● My work is a record of my surroundings and at the same time an autobiography of myself. Now I think I can see a little bit what I've been heading for and what I've lost. I walked long way and finally came here.
