Alive

오선영은 지극히 '주관적'이다. 이 사실은 조금도 의심의 여지가 없고 동시에 모든 사람에게 적용된다. 오선영의 작업은 철저히 '개인적'이다. 이 역시 조금도 의심의 여지가 없고 동시에 모든 이에게 적용된다. 동의하지 않는다면, 그것은 이미 개인이 상실된 사회의 관념 또는 객관성에 관한 논의여야 할 것이다. 주관적인 '나', 한 개인으로서 '나'의 삶은 모든 것의 전제가 된다. 개인으로부터 비롯되지 않은 것은 없다. 그런데 문득 '나'는 온전히 '나'로부터 비롯된 삶을 살고 있는가? 당신은 그 누구의 무엇도 아닌 철저히 자신의 삶을 살아본 적이 있는가?

오선영은 이번 전시 『Alive』에서 온전히 개인적인 '나' 자신으로 살기 위해 숨을 쉰다. 숨을 쉬는 것 외에 그 어떤 행위도 하지 않는다. 안정적인 호흡을 하기 위해 온전히 집중하고 노력한다. 한마디로 잘 '살아 있'기 위해 최선을 다한다. 그런데 그 '살아 있'기는 당연하거나 자연스럽지 않고 오히려 절실하다. 가장 원초적이지만 가장 절박하고 무의식적이지만 특별히 의식적이다. 전시장에는 '오선영이 살아있음' 그 자체만이 있다. 그런데 이 '살아있음'은 동시에 '함께' 살아있다. 숨을 쉬는 이는 오선영뿐만이 아니다. 전시장 안의 관객들은 필연적으로 숨을 쉴 것이고 그렇게 모두는 지극히 개인적으로 함께 살아 있게 된다.

그럼에도 불구하고 누군가는 살아있는 오선영을 향해 아무것도 하지 않는다고 말할지 모른다. 그 말이 맞는다면 안타깝게도 그는 자신의 삶에서 꽤 많은 시간을 아무것도 하지 않은 채 보내야 한다. 그러나 숨을 의식하지 못한 채 무언가를 해야 하는 삶은 그렇지 않은 순간에 숨을 놓치기 쉽다. 스스로를 위해 온전히 자신의 호흡에 맞춰 숨을 쉬는 것, 그것만으로도 충분하다. "숨만 쉬어도 괜찮다", 오선영이 마지막에 내뱉은 말처럼. ■ 김가원

Sun Oh is quite 'subjective'. This fact is indisputable and simultaneously applicable to everyone. Sun Oh's work is thoroughly 'personal'. This fact is also completely undeniable and simultaneously applicable to everyone. If anyone disagrees, then it should lead to a discussion on objectivity or an idea of a society where individuals are already lost. As a subjective self and an individual, the life of 'I' becomes the premise of everything. All things originate from individuals. This unexpectedly begs the question: Do 'I' live a life that stems entirely from 'I'? Have you ever lived your own life thoroughly instead of one for anyone else? ● In this exhibition 『Alive』, Sun Oh breathes in order to live as a completely personal 'self'. She does not do anything other than breathe. She fully focuses and strives to achieve stable breathing. In short, she does her best to be suitably 'alive'. However, 'being alive' does not seem natural or spontaneous, but rather desperate. It is the most primitive yet most critical, and unconscious yet conscious behavior in particular ways. Within this exhibition venue, you will notice only the notion that 'Sun Oh is alive' itself. Nevertheless, this 'being alive' is simultaneously accompanied by 'togetherness'. Sun Oh is not the only one who breathes. The audience in the exhibition hall inevitably breathes, and as such, everybody is alive as one but in a perfectly personal manner. ● Nonetheless, some might say that Sun Oh is not doing anything despite being alive. If that is indeed true, then they must spend quite a lot of time doing nothing within their own lives, unfortunately. However, a life in which one has to spend time engaged in something without being conscious of one's breathing is prone to losing one's breath in other times. Fully breathing according to one's own breath for oneself is enough in itself. This is demonstrated in Sun Oh's own words at the end - "It is okay to just breathe". ■ Gawon Kim
