Programmatic Image

실재하는 듯한 작가의 사진 속 이미지는 기계적 재연 과정을 적극적으로 활용하여 제작 된, 촬영자가 경험하는 실제 세계와는 멀어진 가상의 이미지다. 이러한 이미지들로 구성된 전시 『Programmatic Image』 에서 작가는 기계라는 짜여진 프로그램을 거치는 사진의 구조적인 특성에 대해 탐구한다. 그에게 사진은 손쉬운 생산 소비의 매체로 여겨지는 실상과 다르게 프로그램의 매체로써 장치적 복잡함을 가지며, 그러한 프로그램성은 개인의 개입을 한계 짓고 주체성 발휘에 제한을 둔다. 즉, 오직 프로그램화되어 있는 구조 안에서 개인의 주체적 개입이 가능한 것이다. 작가는 이러한 점을 재고하며 과연 프로그램을 넘어서 개인의 자율적 행위가 가능한 사진이 무엇일까 고민한다. 나아가 이러한 모습이 오늘날 우리 사회의 모습과 닮아있음을 이야기하며 우리가 너무 많은 시스템(프로그램) 속 구조들로 한계 지어지고 있는 것은 아닌지 질문한다. ■ 안영준

Images in the artist's photographs, which seem to be real, are what he called 'virtual images' that are far from the real world experienced by the photographer, produced by actively utilizing the mechanical representation process. In 『Programmatic Image』, an exhibition composed of these artificial images, the artist explores the structural characteristics of photography through a structured program by machine. Unlike the prejudice that photography is regarded as a medium for easy production and consumption, the artist consider photography as a medium of programming which has a device complexity, and such programmability limits individual intervention and limits the expression of subjectivity. In other words, the subjective intervention of the individual is possible only within the programmed structure. The artist reconsiders these points and ponders what kind of photography is possible beyond the program to allow an individual to act independently. Furthermore, it talks about the resemblance to our society today, and asks whether we are being limited by too many structures (programs) in the system. ■ Youngjun Ahn
