개관 10주년을 맞은 대구미술관은 Y 아티스트 프로젝트를 '주제전' 방식으로 새롭게 선보인다. 그 첫 번째 전시는 '유머'에 주목한다. 인류 문명의 변천과 역사 속에서 웃음, 그 자체는 그리 대단한 것이 아니었을 수 있지만, 인간 감정의 깊숙이 작용하며 모든 순간에 개입한 것은 분명한 사실이다. 전쟁과 역병 속에서조차도 웃음은 사라지지 않았다. 동시대를 함께 호흡하는 다섯 작가의 작품을 통해 사회와 예술의 면면을 솔직하고 거침없이 젊은 감각과 유머 코드를 통해 교감하고자 한다. 『유머랜드주식회사』에서는 시각예술에서 '유머'의 표현적 측면을 발굴하고 그 맥락을 살펴보고자 한다. ● 이준용은 삶의 다양한 순간을 그린다. 장종완은 사물과 동물을 의인화하여 우리 삶의 모순을 드러낸다. 김영규는 현실과 구분되지 않은 유희적 상황을 연출한다. 이러한 상황은 모순적 서사구조와 탈맥락화를 통해 웃음을 유발한다. 이들의 유머는 마치 '블랙 코미디' 와 같다. 사회와 일상의 이면을 유머로 승화해서 보여주는 한편 풍자의 의미 또한 담겨있다. 이승희 작가는 함축된 문장의 의미를 변주하며 확대해나간다. 단 하나의 문장으로 시작된 작품 「우리가 남이가」를 통해 무수한 '우리'를 만나며 작가의 재치와 센스로 공동체의 문제의식을 느껴볼 수 있다. 반면 최수진의 해방된 상상력과 거침없는 자유는 온전한 기쁨의 웃음을 불러일으킨다. 순수한 기쁨 그 자체 또한 웃음이다. ● 이렇듯 이들 작품에서는 공통적으로 유머 코드를 발견할 수 있으며 그 맥락이 조금씩 다르기에 이들을 통해 현대미술에서 유머가 작동하는 방식과 그 다층적 의미를 짚어 볼 수 있을 것이다. 아마 전시를 보고 돌아설 때쯤에는 웃음과 눈물이 마음속에 공존하게 될 것이다. ■ 대구미술관

In celebration of the 10th anniversary, Daegu Art Museum is presenting Y Artists Project in the new form of "thematic exhibition." The first chapter of the exhibition series pays attention to "humor." Throughout the transition in history of human civilization, laughter itself may not have been something predominant, but it is indisputably true that it has been deeply engaged in human emotions involving every moment. Even in the midst of war and epidemic, laughter exists. Through the works of five artists, contemporaries of our time, we intend to create a bond of empathy with different aspects of society and art through their straightforward and unstoppable sense of youth and the unique humor code. Humorland & Co. intends to discover the expressive facets of "humor" in visual arts to examine the inherent context. ● LEE Joonyong portrays various moments in our lives. JANG Jongwan reveals the contradictions in our lives by personifying objects and animals. KIM Younggyu creates playful situations, which are not distinguishable from reality. This situation leads to laughter through the contradictory narrative structure and the process of de-contextualization. Their humor is like a sort of "black comedy." It shows the other side of society and everyday life by transforming it into humor, while touching upon the meaning of satire. LEE Seunghee expands the scope of humor by playing a variation in connoted sentences. Through the work We are not strangers that starts with a single sentence, full of wits and ingenuity of the artist, we can meet innumerable "us" and sense the critical mind of community. On the other hand, CHOI Sujin's liberated imagination and uninhibited freedom bring about laughter of a full joy. The pure delight itself also forms laughter. This way, humor codes or a sense of humor can be found in common in the works of five artists. ● Since their contexts are slightly different, you can approach how humor works in contemporary art with polysemy. By the time you finish appreciating all the works from the exhibition, somehow, you will find yourself with heartful laughter and tears at the same time. ■ Daegu Art Museum
