적절한 반응 (Appropriate reaction)

불안의 가능 조건 ● 인간은 존재적으로 불안하다. 불안의 개념을 정교화한 19세기 덴마크 철학자 키에르케고어(S. Kierkegaard)는 "인간은 살아있는 한 유·무형의 불안에서 결코 벗어날 수 없다"고 했다. ● 지난 한 해, 전 세계를 강타한 코로나19 팬데믹은 이러한 인간의 존재를 더욱 직시하게 된 기간이었다. 우리는 현대판 바벨탑이 무너지는 소리를 들었다. 자기 유익만을 추구하며, 인간의 영광과 힘을 과시하기 위해 하늘 높이 쌓아 올렸던 바벨탑은 신에 대한 도전을 의미했다. 현대 사회에서도 첨단 과학과 유전 공학의 발달, 다양한 테크놀로지의 영향력이 증대되면서 인간은 자신을 스스로 창조주의 위치에 올려놓으며 끊임없이 교만의 바벨탑을 쌓았다. 코로나19라는 구체적 상황 속에서 일상의 많은 부분은 정지되었고, 바이러스의 대재앙 앞에서 우리는 한없이 작고, 나약한 존재로 서서 '두려움과 떨림'을 마주하였다. ● 이렇듯 실존적으로 불안할 수밖에 없는 인간의 존재를 고찰하고 다양한 형태의 작품을 통해 표현해 온 작가 김선혁은 우리 인간의 존재적 물음의 유일한 답은 오직 '창조주'로부터 나올 수 있음을 이야기한다. 작가 자신이 지니고 있는 크리스천으로서의 신앙적 정체성은 그의 작업의 주요한 원천으로 작용하는데, 이는 그가 붙인 작품의 제목을 통해서 쉽게 엿볼 수 있다. 주로 영어로 된 그의 작품 제목에는 'Pilgrim(순례자)','Root of wisdom(지혜의 근본)', 'Providence(섭리)' 등 성경적 가치가 담겨있다.

이번 개인전의 주요 작품 중 하나인 「Pilgrim-2」(2021)는 일렁이는 듯한 넓은 표면 위로 걷고 있는 인간의 모습이 입체적으로 표현된 작품이다. 이를 광야와 같은, 요동치고 일렁이는 일상의 삶에 발을 딛고 한 걸음 한 걸음 힘겹게 나아가는 현대인의 모습, 보편적 인간의 초상으로 볼 수도 있지만, 작가는 거기에 머물지 않는다. 작품 제목인 "Pilgrim(순례자)"은 '하늘나라에 소망을 두고 본 향을 그리며 이 땅에서 나그네와 같은 자세로 사는 성도'를 뜻하기 때문이다. 바닥을 꽉 채운, 일렁이는 물과 같은 면의 연출과 마치 땅에서 나무가 뻗어 나오듯 그 면 위를 걷는 인간 형상의 선적인 묘사가 대조를 이루는 이 작품은 '철(스테인리스 스틸)'의 재료적 탐구를 진지하게 이어온 작가의 작업 세계를 잘 담고 있다. 인물의 형상은 완전하기보다는, 피부 등 인체를 형성하고 있는 다른 부분은 제거된 채(혹은 벗겨진 채) 혈관만이 뼈대처럼 남겨진 상태처럼 보이는데, 보는 이로 하여금 나무의 뿌리 또는 가지의 모습을 연상시키기도 한다. 이는 인체의 생명의 줄기라고도 할 수 있는 혈관과 생명의 근원인 나무의 뿌리 이미지가 함께 중첩되도록 한 작가의 의도적 장치이다. 작품을 가까이 다가가 살펴보면, 세밀한 용접을 통해 굵은 뼈대의 줄기부터 세세한 잔가지의 묘사, 그리고 잔가지 위로 돋아 있는 작은 잎사귀 하나하나의 섬세한 표현이 돋보인다.

주께서 내 내장을 지으시며 나의 모태에서 나를 만드셨나이다/ 내가 주께 감사하옴은 나를 지으심이 심히 기묘하심이라 주께서 하시는 일이 기이함을 내 영혼이 잘 아나이다/ 내가 은밀한 데서 지음을 받고 땅의 깊은 곳에서 기이하게 지음을 받은 때에 나의 형체가 주의 앞에 숨겨지지 못하였나이다 (시편 139편 13~15절) ● 성경 속 시편에서 다윗이 노래한 것과 같이, 땅의 깊은 곳에서 기이하게 지음을 받은 피조물, 그 어떤 피조물보다 정교하고 신비하게 창조된 피조물, 인간의 존재가 김선혁의 작품에서 잘 드러난다. 앞서 언급한 작품과 같은 시리즈인 「Pilgrim-3」(2021)는 벽에 설치되어 벽으로부터 나오는 듯한 입체적 조각의 형태를 띠고 있는데, 날개를 펼치고 있는 사람의 형상이다. 이 땅에 살아가지만 언제나 창조주가 부를 때에 떠날 준비가 되어 있는 듯 날개를 펼치고 있는, 자유의지를 지닌 인간의 존재를 드러낸다. 또한, 「Root of wisdom」 연작에서는 불완전한 인간에게 이 삶을 살아가는 지혜의 근본은 그 존재적 뿌리인 창조주를 기억하는 것임을 작가는 이야기하고 있다. ● 최근 김선혁의 작품에서 특징적인 것은 그의 조각을 금색으로 도장하고 있다는 것이다. 금색은 기독교 미술에서 절대자의 존재와 영광, 신의 조명(illumination), 신성함을 상징하는 색채인 동시에 성경에서 금송아지 등 우상(idol)을 상징하는 색으로 나타나기도 한다. 어쩌면 이러한 이중성이 곧 인간의 존재일 것이다. 글의 서두에 언급한 키에르케고어가 '불안'을 죄의 가능 조건인 동시에 (죄로부터의) 구원의 조건으로 본 것처럼, 김선혁의 작품은 우리는 불안한 존재이기에 절대자를 의지할 수 있으며, 그때 비로소 불안의 파도를 넘어 우리는 절망 속에서 희망을 볼 수 있다는 메시지를 건네며 도전하고 있다. ■ 서지은

Anxiety as the possibility of possibilities ● Humans are existentially insecure. S. Kierkegaard, the 19th-centuryDanishphilosopherwhoelaboratedtheconceptofanxiety,said,"Human beings can never escape from tangible and intangible anxiety as long as they are alive." ● The COVID-19 pandemic that attacked the world last year made human beings realize the above more clearly. We heard the sound of the modern-day Tower of Bable collapsing. The Tower of Babel was built high in the sky to show off the glory and power of human beings; pursuing only self-interest meant a challenge to God. In modern society, human beings put themselves in the position of the Creator. They constantly built the Tower of Babel of their own pride, believing in the power of the development of advanced science and genetic engineering, as well as the influence of various technologies. In the tragic situation of COVID-19, many parts of our daily life have been suspended. Right in front of the catastrophe of the virus, we faced 'fear and trembling,' standing as infinitely small and weak beings. ● Sun-hyuk Kim, an artist who has considered the existence of human beings that cannot help but be insecure existentially and expressed them through various types of his artworks, says that the only answer to our existential question can come from the 'Creator.' The artist's own religious identity as Christian acts as a significant source of his artworks. This can be easily shown from the titles of his works. The titles of his works, mainly written in English, contain biblical values such as 'Pilgrim,' 'Root of wisdom,' and 'Providence.' ● Pilgrim-2 (2021), which is one of the major artworks of this solo exhibition, is a three-dimensional expression of a human walking on a wide, oscillating surface. This can be seen as a portrait of a modern man, a universal portrait of a human being, stepping on one's feet in the wild and turbulent daily life, walking step by step, with difficulty. However, the artist does not just stay there. This is because the title of his work, "Pilgrim," means 'a saint who has a hope in heaven and lives like a stranger on this earth.' This work that contains the contrasting images of the surface that fills the floor, like rippling water, and the linear depiction of a human figure walking on its surface as if a tree were growing out of the ground contains the artist's world of work, who has been seriously pursuing the material exploration of 'iron(stainless steel).' The shape of the figure is not complete, but it looks like a state in which only blood vessels are left like skeletons, with the skin and other parts of the human body removed (or peeled). It also reminds the viewers of the appearance of the roots or branches of a tree. This is the artist's intentional device to make the images of blood vessels, which can be called the stems of life in the human body, and the root of a tree, the source of life, overlap together. If you take a closer look at the work, you can see the detailed description of the thick skeleton of the stem, the detailed twigs, and the delicate expression of each small leaves sprouting from the twigs through intricate welding. ● For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depth of the earth. (Psalm 139:13-15) ● As David sang in the psalm of the Bible, the existence of human beings, a creature created strangely from the deep inside of the earth; a creature created more exquisitely and mysteriously than any other creature, is well revealed in Kim's work. Pilgrim-3 (2021), the artwork of the same series with the works mentioned earlier, is installed on the wall and takes the form of a three-dimensional sculpture that appears to come out of the wall; it is a figure of a person spreading out the wings. It shows the substance of a free-willed human being who lives on the earth but always spreads its wings as if ready to leave this place when the Creator calls. Moreover, in the Root of wisdom series, the artist talks about the basis of wisdom to live his life for imperfect humans is to remember the Creator, the root of their existence. ● A distinctive feature of Sun-hyuk Kim's recent works is that his sculptures are painted in gold. Gold is a color that symbolizes the existence and glory of the Absolute, God's illumination, and holiness in Christian art. At the same time, it appears as a color representing idols such as the golden calf in the Bible. Perhaps this duality indicates the very substance of human beings. As Kierkegaard, mentioned at the beginning of this article, regarded 'anxiety' as both a possible condition for sin and a condition for salvation (from sin), Sun-hyuk Kim's work makes a challenge by delivering the message that we can rely on the Absolute because we are insecure beings. Only then can we overcome the waves of anxiety and see hope in despair. ■ Jieun Seo
