평평-팽팽 : 경계를 넘어

『평평-팽팽 : 경계를 넘어』는 시각언어를 기반으로 사회·문화적 이슈를 다뤄온 13인의 작가를 통해 동시대의 지평을 가늠해보고자 한다. 이는 동시대성을 하나의 이름 아래 호명하기 보다, 숱한 개념으로 분절된 오늘날의 파편들이 공존하는 '상태'를 바라보기 위한 시도이다. 다양한 매체를 경유하여 동시대를 고찰해온 작가들은 이분과 구별에서 벗어나 재현과 (비)재현, 일상과 (비)일상의 경계를 오고 간다. 전시 제목 '평평-팽팽'은 그러한 상태를 묘사한 의태어로, 경계에 자리하는 것들이 점 찍어 이루는 선, 각각의 선들이 가로세로로 얽혀 이루는 긴장과 이완의 관계를 나타낸다. 관객은 전시장에 놓인 작품들을 각기 다른 방향과 길이로 이으며 저마다의 서사를 완성할 수 있을 것이다. 궁극적으로 본 전시는 오늘날을 정의하는 말들이 무한히 팽창하는 곳에서, 느슨하면서도 불가분하게 연결된 경계의 지점들을 짚어보는 기회를 마련해보고자 한다.

1. 재현과 (비)재현 ● 실재와 가상의 구분이 흐려지고 가상이 실재를 대체하기도 하는 오늘날, 미술에서 재현의 문제는 여전히 중요한 화두이다. 작가들은 각기 다른 지지체를 매개로 재현된 이미지를 통해 다른 것을 지시하거나, 비가시적인 대상을 특정한 형태로 환유하는 방식을 모색해왔다. 강현선, 송수영은 사진과 영상을 통해 현실의 상을 변주하고 그 결과물인 가상의 이미지를 중첩시킴으로써 재현과 (비)재현의 경계를 흐린다. 한편 정용국, 정지현, 김지민은 전통적 재료를 활용하여 재현 대상의 고유한 특성을 다르면서도 유사한 감각으로 환유한다. 다른 접점에서 이민재, 박용식은 주로 동물이 등장하는 회화, 조각, 설치미술을 통해 가시적인 기표 이면의 고유한 메시지를 전달한다.

2. 일상과 (비)일상 ● 오늘날 사회·경제적 발전과 궤를 같이하며 다변화된 현대사회의 풍경은 더욱 불투명해졌다. 팽창하는 도시의 활기와 그만큼 견고해진 사각지대는 많은 동시대 작가들의 주제로 다뤄져 왔다. 본 전시에서 소외된 과거와 마주한 오늘, 아직 오지 않은 미래를 넘나드는 각 작품은 서로 다른 시공간을 포개며 낯익고도 생경한 풍경을 제시한다. 정이지, 개리정, 조혜연이 표현하는 일상 속 경쾌한 리듬은 가려진 기억과 도시의 역사, 현대사회의 재난을 탐구하는 김라연, 정재호, 신정균의 작업과 대비되며 우리의 오늘에 거리를 둔 성찰을 요청한다. ■ 김소희

『Pyeongpyeong-Pangpang: Above the Boundaries』aims to reflect contemporary era through 13 artists who have dealt with social and cultural issues based on visual language. This is an attempt to look at contemporaneity as a 'state' in which fragments of the divided concepts coexist, rather than calling it under one name. Artists attempt to deviate from the distinction and dichotomy and go back and forth between representation and (non)representation, daily and (non)daily. The title of the exhibition, "Pyeongpyeong-Pangpang," is a mimetic word that describes such a condition, and represents the relationship between tension and relaxation formed by the lines on the boundary. The audience will be able to complete their own narrative by connecting the works in different directions and lengths. Ultimately, this exhibition seeks to provide an opportunity to point out the points of boundaries that are loosely yet inextricably connected within the place where words defining today expand infinitely.

1. Representation and (non)representation ● The issue of representation is still an important topic in art today when reality and virtual distinctions are blurred and one replaces the other. Artists have sought ways to direct different objects and situations through represented images using different media. Hyunsun Kang and Sooyoung Song blur the boundary between representation and (non)representation by changing the image of reality through photos and videos and superimposing the resulting virtual image. Meanwhile, Yongkook Jeong, Ji Hyun Cheong, and Jeemin Kim use traditional materials to turn the unique characteristics of reproduced objects into different but similar senses. On the other hand, Minjae Lee and Yongsik Park deliver unique messages behind visible signs through paintings, sculptures, and installation works featuring animals.

2. Daily and (non)daily ● Today, with social and economic development, the landscape of modern society has become more ambivalent and opaque. The expanding city's vitality and so solid blind spots have been covered by many contemporary artists. In this exhibition, each work presents a strange but familiar landscape by overlapping different times and spaces. The cheerful rhythm of daily lives represented by Yi Ji Jeong, Gary Chung and Heyon Cho contrasts with the works of Rayeon Kim, Jaeho Jung, and Jungkyun Shin, who explore the history and hidden memories of the city, disasters in modern society, and thus asks for our reflection by keeping distance from today. ■ Sohee Kim
