"수퍼 캘리 프래질리스틱 익스피 얄리 도셔스 Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!"  ● 한 여성이 우산을 든 채 웃으며 말한다. 1964년에 제작된 뮤지컬 영화 '메리 포핀스'에 등장하는 단어이자, 이 영화에서 가장 강력한 마법 스펠 중 하나이다. 어떤 일이 있어도 이 주문을 외치면 멋진 일이 생기며 기분이 좋아진다는 마법의 주문. 조금은 어린아이 같은 기분으로 외치는 이 단어가 4명의 한국 작가와 4명의 요르단 작가가 함께 하는 프로젝트형 전시의 제목이 되었다. 외우기 힘든, 가장 긴 영어 단어가 전시 제목이 되었지만 어떤가, 이 단어를 읽는 수고를 마다하지 않는 자에게 영화에서처럼 멋진 일이 일어날지도 모른다!

전염병에 의한 타인과의 심리적 거리는 어쩌면 물리적 거리보다 더 벌어지고 있을지도 모르겠다. 따듯한 피부의 온기가 두려움이 되어 마음이 고립되어가던 즈음, 요르단 작가와 한국 작가가 서로의 작업을 교환하여 완성하는 이 프로젝트가 싹을 띄우기 시작했다. 가보지 못한 나라, 온갖 총천연색 꽃이 만개하는 붉은 흙과 바위의 나라, 그곳 예술가들의 작업은 어떨까, 호기심과 왕성한 창작욕이 들끓었다. 이는 그야말로 예술가의 영혼 한 조각을 교환하자는 말만큼이나 매력적이고 달콤했다. 이 프로젝트는 예술가의 과잉된 자의식을 내려놓고, 상대방 작업의 부산물trash이 나의 작업의 새로운 구축점trasure이 되어, 우리가 갈 수 없는 먼 거리를 이미지와 실물의 오브제로 여행travel하는데 그 의미가 있다. 어쩌면 이진경의 책 '노마디즘'에서 말한 것처럼 앉아서 하는 유목이 가능할 수 있겠다. 참여한 작가들은 인스타그램(@jo_kr_art)으로 서로의 작업과정을 탐독하며 이 흥미로운 프로젝트를 위해 "수퍼 - 캘리 - 프래질리스틱 - 익스피 - 얄리 – 도셔스"를 중얼거리고 있다.

이 프로젝트에 참여한 도디 타바Dodi Tabbaa, 사머 타바Samer tabbaa, 디나 하다딘Dina Haddadin, 주만 님리Juman Nimri는 이미 자신만의 독특한 작업세계가 확고한 예술가들이다. 고립과 격리가 이루어진 참에 기꺼이 즐겁게 참여한 이 프로젝트를 위해, 자신들의 드로잉과 사진, 오브제들을 보내 주었다. 그들의 작업은 코로나19를 뚫고 한국의 우리에게 당도하여 작업실에서 새 작업으로 완성되어 가는 중이다. 그리고 상대방이 채울 나머지를 생각하며 보낸 한국 작가들의 작업은 요르단 작가들이 자신만의 작업으로 변형되고 있다. 작업 과정은 짧은 영상언어로 해석되어 여행하는 작품들이 어떤 방식으로 다른 예술가의 손에서 새로이 탈바꿈을 하는지를 보여주고자 했다. 또한 한국 작가들이 시작하고 요르단 작가들이 완성한, 혹은 그 반대의 작업들이 전시장 안에서 적절히 배치될 예정이다. 요르단에서 한국과 요르단 사이 가교 역할을 하며 한국 작가 안세은은 프로젝트를 기획하였고, 예술가이자 공간 운영자인 김수진은 아트잠실로 공간을 후원해 주었다. 그들의 기꺼운 마음이 프로젝트의 단단한 바탕이 되었고, 나머지 여섯 작가의 자발적인 참여가 예술을 통한 즐거운 소통이 가능하게 했다.  ● 이렇게 이 전시의 제목 '수퍼 캘리 프래질리스틱 익스피 얄리 도셔스 Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious'처럼, 나의 작업이 다른 예술가의 손에서 또 다른 작업으로 다시 태어나며, 먼 곳 만나지 못한 예술가들과 무형의 작업 공동체 안에서 우정을 키우는 색다른 경험을 하고 있다. 이 프로젝트가, 이 전시가 우리가 경험하는 일상의 마법 같은 일이 될 것이다.    ■ 민경

"Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!" exclaims a woman holding an umbrella. The powerful spell, which appears in the 1964 musical film Mary Poppins, brings joy and pleasure. This playful word became the title of the exhibition of four Korean and four Jordanian artists. As in the movie, happiness may come to those who attempt to read the long and difficult title. ● The pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges, such as the growing psychological distances. As a result, maintaining valued relationships has become harder for many. In the midst of feeling detached, Jordanian and Korean artists came together to create a new project. Not having been to Jordan yet knowing it as a country of astonishing landscapes, Korean artists were delighted to collaborate with artists of the fascinating land.  ● For this project, instead of putting emphasis on creating their own work, artists shifted their focus to reproducing those of others. The byproduct of one artist became a new construction point for the other. This process of interacting with images and objects allowed a meaningful exploration between the two cultures without having to travel. Instead, artists shared their work processes in virtual spaces such as Instagram (@jo_kr_art). Perhaps, as mentioned in Jin Kyung Lee's book Nomadism, sedentary nomadic life may have become more common.  ● Dina Haddadin, Dodi Tabbaa, Juman Nimri, and Samer Tabbaa are well-established artists with their unique worlds of art. During the unprecedented times, they willingly sent their drawings, photos, and objects to Korea for exchange, which are being transformed into new pieces. At the same time, Jordanian artists are also recreating work sent from Korea. Each artist shared a short video explaining their process of work.  ● Se Eun An bridged artists from both countries and arranged the exhibition. In addition, Soojin Kim provided Art Jamsil space. Thanks to their firm support, artists were able to pleasantly communicate through art.  Like the title of this show, 'Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious', artists gained special experiences of having their work reborn by the hands of others and fostered friendships in a boundless working community.
