Jungle City:Faces in the Crowd

고은강과 멧 와이드먼, 이 두 작가가 이번 전시를 통해 보여 주고자 하는 주제는 동시대를 살아가는 인간에 관한 모색이다. 현대의 사회는 테크놀로지와 인터넷의 발전으로 이전의 사회보다 세계가 더욱더 가까워 졌다. 국가와 지역에 상관없이 소셜미디어, 인터넷 채팅이나 영상통화를 통하여 사람들은 더욱 긴밀하게 인간 관계를 유지할 수 있고, 또한 이런 인터넷을 중심으로 한 글로벌화를 통하여 전세계의 사람들은 더욱 공감대를 형성하며 서로가 교류를 통해 교감하고 있다. 하지만 이러한 사회의 현상이 가속화 됨에 따라 많은 사람들이 더욱 고립되고 외로워 지는 경향을 보여주기도 한다. 또한 이러한 사회 속에서 인간은 자신의 정체성을 잃은 채 사회속에 묻혀서 빠르게 적응하며 살고 있다. MEC (Matthew Weidmann and Eunkang Koh Collective)은 이번 전시 Jungle City: Faces in the Crowd 를 통하여 이와 같이 더욱 가까워 지지만 더욱 멀어지는 이 사회를 살아가는 인간들의 형상들을 콜라보레이션을 통해 약간은 과장 되고 유머러스하게 작업을 표현해 보았다.

한국에서 태어나서 한국전통의 사상과 불교와 동양적인 사상을 공부한 고은강과 미국 남 켈리포니아에서 태어나고 자라면서, 모든 인종과 문화가 섞여있는 멜팅 팟 속에서 살아온, 멧 와이드먼의 기본적인 배경은 많은 차이가 있다. 그러나 만화와 애니메니션, 공상과학 영화와 책을 보고 자란 세대라는 점, 그리고 소비주의가 점점 발달되어지는 과정을 보면서 자라났다는 공통점을 가지고 있다. 이러한 배경을 가진 두 작가는, 우리가 살고 있는 사회 속에서, 인간의 모습을 같이하고 있지만, 더욱 외로워 지고 있는 우리의 모습들을 두 작가의 독특한 스타일로 표현해 낸다. 다양한 도시의 얼굴들은, 인간과 동물들, 그리고 기계적인 이미지(사이보그) 형상을 약간은 일그러 지고, 상징적으로, 그리고 유머러스하게 표현한 드로잉들을 설치의 형태로 이번 전시를 준비하였다. ● MEC은 이 전시를 통하여 관객들이 잠시 길을 멈추고, 마치 정글속 도시속에 살고 있는 현대 인간의 모습 대변하듯 설치되어 있는 이 군상들을 보며 복잡하고 다양한 현대를 살고 있는 우리의 모습을 생각해 볼 수 있는 기회가 되었으면 한다.

"Jungle City: Faces in the Crowd," by Mathew Weidmann and Eunkang Koh Collective (MEC), explores ideas about the structures and influences of technology on human relations and identities in contemporary societies. With advanced technology, our lives have become both more connected and, ironically, disconnected: people worldwide can communicate via social media, which creates cohesion in human communities; through live stream, audio and video chat, people can interact with each other regardless of their locations. Yet despite these and other internet connections, we may also feel isolated and lonely. Further, technology may work to homogenize individual identities. In the exhibition, Jungle City: Faces in the Crowd, MEC presents an exaggerated and humorous portrait of the human lifeworld in contemporary, complex societies. The different faces in these crowds represent a global, jungle-like city where invisible wires connect and yet create ruptures and gaps. These crowds are the faces of us, who live lifestyles that knit us close and yet create distorted distances. ● At first glance, these two artists have completely different backgrounds and grounding for their work; Eunkang Koh, from Seoul, South Korea, was influenced by Buddhism and Asian philosophy, and Mathew Weidmann grew up in southern California, United States, in a melting pot of diverse groups of people and cultures. However, these two artists have found find commonality in these two different cultures. Koh and Weidmann both absorbed popular culture and watched the development and growth of consumer culture while being influenced by graphic novels, animation, Sifi movies and books. These two artists find different yet similar ideas and perspectives from these two cultures to create portraits of humans in a multilayered society, portraits which are a mixture of human, animal, and machine(cyborg) in twisted, humorous, and symbolic ways, to inspire audiences to pause for a moment and think about how we live in the contemporary world. ■
