작은 것이 아름답다

세상은 지난해 이어 올 한해도 힘들 것이라 생각된다. 모든 것이 움츠러든 시기 문화 예술계도 예외가 아닐 수 없다. ● 'Small is Beauty'는 백남준 선생께서 생전에 하신 말씀을 빌려 왔다. 거대한 뭔가에 대한 기대와 넘쳐남에 반대로 작은 것도 아름답다 라는 백 선생의 인터뷰 내용에서 이 어려운 시대를 살아가는 우리에게 의미하는 바를 줄 수 있지 않겠나 하는 생각에 이번 전시 제목으로 가져오게 되었다.

우리 시대는 거대함 이란 단어에 앞다퉈 세상을 숫자 메김 해 온 거 같다. 세계 최대, 최초, 거대, 유일 이런 단어에 귀 기울이고 관심 가져왔다. 어느 공연예술가가 텅 빈 객석을 보고 지난날을 반성하게 되었다 라는 이야기를 전해 들었다. 우리는 그동안 넘쳐남과 거대함에 앞다퉈 동승해 왔고 그런 일상들이 우리에게 변함없이 오리라 생각했다. ● 지금 우리 시대는 지난날의 사소한 일상들이 그립고 감사함을 느끼는 시대에 살고 있다. 우리가 살아가는 이 땅의 모든 것들은 고만고만함으로 설명 되어지는데 그 사실을 우리는 잊고 있었던 거 같다.

전시는 크고 거대하지 않고 작다 라는 기본 개념에 의미를 두고자 한다. ● 내용도 우리가 잊고 있었던 소소함에 다가가고자 한다. 정치적이고 이념적이고 이런 내용보다 우리 주위의 소소함을 말하고 표현하는 그런 내용의 작품들이 전시되었으면 한다. ■ 이지현

The world thinks this year, following the last, will continue to be difficult. In an era when everything contracts, the cultural art community cannot be an exception. ● 'Small is Beauty' has been derived from a quote by the artist Paik Nam-june. From the statement from Paik's interview that as oppose to expectation toward something big, small objects are beautiful, I have thought upon the title of this exhibition, thinking that it can provide meaningful implications for those of us living through this difficult period. ● The current era seems to compete in adding numerical values to the world with the term 'large'. World's largest, first in the world, humongous, only in the world - we have been listening carefully to all these terms. Then I have heard of the story that a performance artist came to regret the past days after staring at an empty auditorium. We have so far accompanied the concept of large and overflow, and have thought such daily lives would come to us unchanging. ● Today, we live in a period in which we long and feel thankful toward even the most trivial daily routines of the past. Everything in this place where we live upon can be explained through congregation of smalls, and it seems that we had forgotten such fact. ● This exhibition places significance on the basic concept of something small that is neither big or huge. ● The content is to approach and touch upon triviality we have forgotten about. Instead of being political or ideological, I hope the art works that express and remind us of triviality around us can be displayed. ■ Lee Ji Hyun
