『Vertigo』는 낙원상가에 위치한 d/p가 가진 공간적 특성을 모티브로 우리의 인지와 지각을 의도적으로 흩뜨리고, 개개인이 가지고 있는 '중심'에 대한 질문을 던지고자 기획되었다. 전시명 'Vertigo'란 사전적 의미로는 현기증, 회전감, 부동감, 완전한 암흑감 등을 동반하는 평형장애로 자신과 주위가 실제로는 정지해 있음에도 회전하는 것처럼 느껴지는 주관적인 지각 현상이며, 세계와 나의 중심이 매끄럽게 동기화되지 않았을 때 생기는 감각이다. ● 낙원악기상가의 미로 같은 계단을 올라와 마주하는 공간 d/p는 낡은 건물 속 새로운 시공간에 들어온 듯 생경한 인상을 준다. 관객은 공간에 들어서며, 한눈에 파악할 수 없는 빛과 움직임들을 맞닥뜨리게 된다. 우리는 공간과 작업 사이를 거닐며 자신이 지닌 위치감각을 기반으로 중심을 포착하려 집중을 기울인다. 하지만 그럴수록 오히려 마주하는 것은 자꾸만 흔들리는 균형감각, 중심축이 움직이는 듯한 현기증이다. ● 전시장 초입에 전시된 「White Shadow」(2021)는 벽면과 선반위에 기대어 있는 두 개의 모니터로 구성된 작품이다. 세워진 모니터에는 백색화면이, 밑면에는 d/p 바닥을 그대로 투과하듯 옮겨 놓은 영상이 상영된다. 백색화면은 아무것도 재생되지 않는 멈춰져 있는 화면처럼 보이지만 관람객은 필터가 부착된 안경과 돋보기를 사용해야만 영상을 관람할 수 있다. 각각의 모니터에는 작가와 기획자가 'Vertigo'라는 주제어를 공유하며 각자의 관점으로 콜라주한 텍스트와 이를 기반으로 제작된 영상이 재생된다.

조해나_Penumbra_팬, 4m 레일, 혼합재료, 450mm : 628mm, 설치_가변크기_2021.

「Penumbra」(2021)는 d/p의 유리창 전면부 4m 레일에 매달린 648mm 지름의 스테인리스 원형 추가 반복적으로 직선운동을 하며, 이따금 진자 운동을 하게 설치되어 있다. 450mm 지름의 선풍기 구조물은 태양의 형태를 가장한 모습으로 전시장에 가장 큰 빛을 만들며, 추를 마주보는 선풍기의 조명 빛이 추의 매끈한 표면에 부딪칠 때마다 마치 개기일식의 순간처럼 빛이 전시장의 안팎으로 드리워진다. 발원지로부터 반사된 빛은 전시장 내부 공간과 작품의 표면을 돌아다니며 맺히거나 산란되며, 예측치 못한 운동성을 가지고 서로 영향을 주고받는다.

「Singularity」(2021)는 드론을 회전시켜 d/p바닥을 촬영한 뒤, 이를 회전하는 스크린 구조물을 통해 보여주고 있는 작품이다. 모니터 자체의 돌아가는 방향성과 속도에만 집중하다 보면 영상 자체는 일정한 동적평형상태를 유지하며 재생되고 있는 것처럼 느껴진다. 하지만 이내 스크린 구조물과는 반대되는 방향으로 영상이 회전하고 있는 것을 눈치 챌 수 있다. 작가는 모니터 자체의 운동성, 그리고 영상이 담고 있는 운동에너지의 방향이 스크린을 축으로 교차되며 나타나는 현기증의 순간을 포착한다. 서로 다른 방향으로 작용하는 에너지의 운동성을 바라보는 관람객은 일순간 균형 감각의 흔들림을 경험한다. 또한 평면의 공간감은 스크린을 지평선 삼아 안팎으로 시공간을 확장한다. 「Dented space」(2021), 「Zodiacal light」(2021) 역시 「Singularity」와 연계되어 d/p의 안팎을 영상으로 담아내고, 이러한 움직임과 균형을 이루거나 반대되는 운동성을 부여한 스크린 구조물들을 통해 시공간을 움직인다.

이처럼 작가는 자신이 조각적 태도로 편집 및 제작한 스크린 구조물과 영상을 통해 공간을 재해석한다. 전시장 자체는 작가에게 있어 작업을 만드는 재료이자 조각의 소스가 된다. 이때 작가가 조각한 작품들은 공간의 내부 혹은 이와 연결고리를 가지고 다른 시공간에 대한 상상으로 확장될 수 있는 이미지를 채집하여 긴밀하게 담아낸다. 또한 여기에 오버랩 되는 시간성과 운동에너지는 관객이 서 있는 바로 '그 곳'과 관계하며 축을 뒤틀거나 관점을 교차시키며, 이로 인한 순간적인 균형감각의 혼란은 이따금 현기증을 유발하며 우리의 시공간 경험을 확장한다.

우리는 자신만의 중심을 가지고 세상을 바라보지만 사실 중심이란 것은 언제 어디서나 흔들릴 수 있다. '중심'이란 지극히 개인적인 차원의 것으로 나와 세계와의 관계 맺기를 통해 '형성되는 것'이다. 『Vertigo』는 전시장에서 나-공간-작품과의 관계 맺기의 경험을 통해 포착되는 '새로운 중심의 가능성'에 대한 질문을 던진다. 작업에서 발현되는 출렁임은 저마다 시공간과 연결고리를 가지고 얽히고설키며 다양한 감각들로 포착 혹은 불 포착될 것이다. 전시는 우리가 당연하게 여기는 것들, 그리고 확신하는 것들에 대한 중심을 흔들고 끊임없이 질문을 던진다. 『Vertigo』를 통해 새롭게 형성되고 확장되며 사라지는 균형감과 시공간을 경험할 수 있기를 바란다. ■ 이재화_이현경

『Vertigo』 is designed to scatter cognitive-perceptual factors, throwing a question of "a balance" that each individual has. The exhibition is held at a space called d/p in Nakwon Musical Instrument Arcade, where it serves as a motif for the site specific artworks. The title of the show, Vertigo means a sensation of whirling and loss of balance, a subjective perceptual phenomenon whose symptoms include dizziness, spinning and others. It is a physical perception when the balance between the world and a person fails to smoothly synchronize. ● Maze-like staircases at Nakwon Musical Instrument Arcade lead to d/p that makes an unusual impression as if viewers just enter a new time and space in the old building. Once set foot in the exhibition, they encounter the lights and objects' movements that few can recognize at a glance. While walking around between the space and the works, we tend to pay attention to spotting the center based on sense of position. But more of such efforts would cause loss of balance: giddiness trembling the central axis. ● 「White Shadow」 (2021), set up at the beginning of the showcase, is made of a couple of monitors. The one on the walls only shows the white screen, as though it manifests nothing; and the one on the shelf displays d/p's floor as though viewers look through a glass. Only filtered glasses with a magnifier allow onlookers to see the video on the white screen. Each monitor plays videos of collage texts and moving visual images produced based on conversations about "Vertigo" between the artist and the curator to share each perspective. ● 「Penumbra」 (2021) presents a 644mm stainless circular pendulum hanging on the four-meter rail on the ceiling, which continually moves rectilinear motions, and often swings. What it's looking at is a 450mm-radius fan-looking structure emitting the brightest light in the room like the Sun. Whenever the light hits the smooth face of the ball, the illumination and the shadow fill in and outside the space just as the solar eclipse. The reflecting ray makes unpredictable movements affecting each other, while wandering around the internal room—shedding the light on the pieces, sitting down somewhere to be dissipated. ● 「Singularity」 (2021) is a rotating screen structure presenting a video of d/p's floor shot by a revolving drone camera. Focusing on the rotation direction and its pace makes viewers feel it's playing the video, remaining dynamic equilibrium. But they soon would recognize the installaton and the video are turning around in the opposite directions. The artist catches the moment of vertigo manifested the kinetic energies of the monitor, of the images intersected on the screen axis. The observers would experience a wobbling sense of balance with watching the two movements pivoting in the opposite directions. Along with this bias, the plain figures employ the screen to be turned into a three-dimensional one to extend the space-time. Dented Space (2021) and Zodiacal Light (2021), linking with Singularity, contain the videos of in-and-outside of d/p. These motions of the balance and the intersections stimulate time and space through screen installations that the artist sophisticatedly planned. ● As shown by Vertigo, the artist reinterprets the space through the screen constructions and video that she produced and edited as a sculptor's approach. The exhibition hall itself becomes materials for the artist to create works. It is the moment when her sculptures conjunctly presents collected images to expand the imagination over the internal space, and another time-space as well. In company with it, the overlapped temporality and kinetic energies twisted the axis, crossing the points of view at which the viewers are standing. It results in losing the sense of balance that often causes vertigo to extend our time-space. ● We see the world from where we are standing, but where we are standing can be always trembling. "A balance" is extremely personal, and it is about "forming" a relation between us and the world. Vertigo casts a doubt about "a possibility for the new balance" through an experience looking into the relationship between "me, space and the arts" at the exhibition space. The works freezes, or fails to freeze, diverse senses tangled with the time-space. ● This exhibition quivers the condition of the state that we believe it has to be accepted as it is.
