Reference, Deference

전람회에 부쳐 ● 우르르 한 발자국들로 단단하게 다져져 광이 흐르는 길을 걷다 보면, 딱히 내가 걸어온 흔적이라 할 게 없구려. 당최 어디서 시작해서 어디로 가는 지 알 턱이 있나. 때문에 길 끝까지 가닿으려고 걷는 겐지, 아님 그냥 길구경이나 실컷 하려는지 이제 잘 모르게 됐소만. 선행자들이 걸어온 이 눈 부신 길을 실눈 뜨고 굽어 볼 때면, 마치 내가 그분들이나 된 것 마냥 멋들어지게 땀 닦는 흉내만 느네그려. 후행자의 행적에는 길광에 스민 낮밤과 간간이 지나온 갈림길, 길가를 아우르는 풍수, 고양이, 그리고 그 길의 넓고 좁음 따윌 기억하는 것 외엔 딱히 남는 것도 없소이다. 아쉽다고 길 사이에 교각을 세우고 땅굴을 파 값나가는 머릿돌을 세우는 그런 큰 일이 근본도 모르는 쇤네에게 가당키나 한가 싶으이. 그저 떠돌이 놀이패나 장돌뱅이처럼 거점들을 바지런히 지나다니다, 발길 드문 길 귀퉁이에 퍽 하고 땅을 깨며 작은 표석 정도는 박아 볼 수 있지 않겄소. 훗날 길을 걷는다는 게 땀 닦는 흉내가 될지언정, 모르긴 몰라도 앞으로 길은 계속 계속 새로 나지 않겠소이까. 자 우리 한 점 한 점 무광의 표석들을 손에 쥐고, 하여튼 길 끝으로 부단히 다녀보기로 함세. 옳거니 훗날 모든 곳에 길이 가닿으면, 세상천지 모든 땅이란 땅은 죄다 광이 흐를 것이외다. ■ 김영재

As I reflect on this solid and luminous path, polished by my thunderous footsteps, there barely seems to be what is to call a trace. How is one to know where to start, and where to go? Whether this journey leads to the end of the road, or sheds light to the meaning of the journey itself—I no longer know. As I squint at the glistening path of my antecedents, I find myself becoming better at acting just as if I were one of them. Nothing—excluding the glorious days and nights; occasional crossroads; Feng Shui of the streets; cats; and the varying widths of the streets—do I remember, having walked along the path of the successor. The grand acts of building pillars between roads and laying cornerstones on the ground, are beyond the capabilities of such an ignorant servant like I. I would be more than grateful to wander, living life either as a joker or a merchant, marking small milestones at the corners of unvisted paths. While this path I walk on may become a journey of imitation, I will go forward to discover new roads. Let us hold in each of our hands lusterless milestones, and plow through the end of the road. The day every road leads to a destination, will every corner of the ground be lined with light. ■ Kim Young Jea
