마무앙 MAMUANG

위수트 폰니미트 한국 최초 개인전시 『MAMUANG』 ● 위수트의 작품에는 인간의 따뜻함과 삶의 행복이 담겨 있다. 그의 작품에는 '마무앙(한국어로 '망고')이라는 인물과 고양이 '라라', 강아지 '마나오', '탐','엉클 텅' 등이 등장하여 정감있는 일상의 이야기들을 만들어 낸다. "왜 좋아하는지 이유는 없어, 그냥 좋아.", "네 손글씨가 내 마음을 어루만져줘.", "너만이 네 꿈을 이룰 수 있어." 등 다정하고 사소하지만 삶에 대한 깊은 사유를 일으키는 그의 문장은 위수트 특유의 귀여운 그림체와 함께 삶을 관통하는 메시지를 보여준다. 이러한 메시지는 인간의 욕망과 감정에 대해 솔직하게 드러내며 한 권의 책을 읽은 것과 같은 감동과 여운을 남긴다. 한편 위수트만의 유머와 위트가 넘치는 귀여운 그림체와 아름다운 컬러는 시각적 즐거움과 함께 미술 감상의 기쁨을 선사한다. 특히 이번 전시에서는 작품에 담긴 메시지를 태국어, 일본어와 함께 한국어로도 번역해 한국팬들에게 보다 친숙하게 다가가고자 했다.

1976년 태국에서 태어난 위수트 폰니미트는 일본과 태국에서 '탐'이라는 애칭으로 불리며 두터운 팬층을 형성하고 있다. 90년대 이후 디지털과 아날로그, 전통과 현대, 외국 문화의 혼합 등 태국 산업화의 과정을 겪으며 격동의 시간을 보냈다. 1998년 만화가로 데뷔 후 애니메이션 제작, 그림책 출판, 만화잡지 연재, 산리오, 니코 앤드 등 여러 기업과의 콜라버레이션, 소설 삽화, 판화, 회화 그리고 음악까지 다양한 매체와 활동을 통해 그만의 서정 세계를 펼쳐 왔다. ■ 안선영

Wisut's art carries at its core the love of humanity and the warmth of life. Charming and familiar, his works capture the day-to-day moments of a character known as "Mamuang" (known in Korean as "Mango"), Mamuang's white dog Manao("lime") and an Uncle Tongue, Cat lala.  "No reason why I like. Liking is the reason!", "Your handwriting heals my mind.", "Only you can be the dream you.", and other works reflect Wisut's simple but warm style of art. His art speaks to his audience's heart and reveals the charming beauty that is to be found within the dayto-day scale of human existence. In some sense, Wisut's work reveals the true nature of human desire. His art, full of humor and wit, leaves its viewers with a sense of satisfaction, emerging perhaps from the unique perspective and color that pervade every corner of his work. This exhibition features the text within Wisut's work in not only Thai, but Japanese and Korean as well, in hopes of reaching to a broader audience. ● Born in 1976 in Thailand, Wisut Ponnimit is sometimes known by the nickname "Tam" (or "Tum") in Thailand and Japan, where his fanbase continues to expand. Like many born in the 70's, Ponnimit's early life was heavily influenced by the tumult and ideological polarity of the 90's: digital against analog, tradition against modernity, foreign against national, and so forth. All throughout his career, Ponnimit has been at the center of Thailand's growth and flourishing, contributing to both the nation's cultural and economic landscape. Ponnimit debuted in 1998 as a cartoonist, after which he expanded his career into animation, music, and other forms of art. His works, primarily his drawings and comics, have gained significant traction in Thailand and Japan. Collaborating with notable magazines and publishers, such as Sanrio and Niko-And, Ponnimit has built an illustrious and distinguished career as an artist and cultural figure.
