국내 최초, 에콰도르 국민화가 '오스왈도 과야사민 특별기획전' 개최 ● 사비나미술관은 에콰도르 출신 작가 오스왈도 과야사민의 전시를 최초로 개최한다. 본 전시에서는 오스왈도 과야사민의 초기 작품 뿐 아니라 「애도의 길」(1940-50년대), 「분노의 시대」(1960-70년대), 「온유의 시대」(1980-1999년)의 각 시기별 대표작을 포함한 주요 유화, 드로잉, 수채화 89점과 영상 자료를 소개한다. ● 과야사민은 전 생애에 걸쳐 사회적 약자에 가해지는 불의를 고발하고 민중의 문화와 정체성, 종교 등을 자신만의 독창적인 예술로 섬세하게 표현하며 시공간을 초월한 대서사시를 완성했다. 이와 더불어 유럽에서 태동한 전위적, 혁신적 미술운동인 표현주의와 입체주의 개념을 흡수하여 민중주의 미학을 완성하는 등 다층적 예술세계를 구축한 업적을 남겼으며, 조형적 발언의 폭과 깊이는 라틴아메리카 작가 중 단연 독보적이다. ● 그의 작품은 에콰도르 역사의 과거, 현재, 미래를 아우르는 국가 정체성의 의미와 상징성을 지녔으며 애국심과 자긍심을 높이고 공동체 의식을 결속시켜 국민 대통합에 기여하는데 중요한 역할을 하고 있다. 사비나미술관은 본 전시를 통해 과야사민의 삶과 예술을 조망하며 인종에 대한 차별과 핍박의 시대상에 맞선 과야사민의 철학과 태도를 엿보고자 한다.

전시서문 ● 사비나미술관은 국내 최초로 에콰도르의 국민화가이자 라틴아메리카가 낳은 가장 위대한 작가 중 한 사람으로 평가받는 오스왈도 과야사민(OSWALDO GUAYASAMIN 1919-1999) 특별기획전을 개최합니다. 과야사민은 라틴아메리카의 피카소로 불리며 에콰도르 국민의 사랑과 존경을 한 몸에 받는 국보급 예술가입니다. 그는 암울한 시대상황을 거치며 라틴아메리카의 정치, 사회현실에 대한 비판과 가난한 노동자, 원주민, 빈민, 흑인 등 사회적 약자에 가해지는 불의를 작품으로 고발했습니다. 과야사민의 시대정신과 도전의식은 '나는 절망적으로 외치듯이 그림을 그렸으며, 나의 외침은 우리가 살아내야 했던 시대의 굴욕과 비통을 표출하는 외침에 더해졌다'라는 어록에서도 드러납니다. ● 본 전시는 에콰도르의 문화유산으로 지정된 과야사민 재단이 소장한 최고수준의 유화 및 수채화와 드로잉 등을 소개하며 작가의 인터뷰영상과 아카이브를 통해 민중에 대한 억압과 차별, 핍박의 시대상에 맞선 과야사민의 철학과 태도를 살펴보고자 합니다. ■ 사비나미술관

Savina Museum of Contemporary Art organizes Korea's first special exhibition on Oswaldo Guayasamin (1919-1999), a painter representing Ecuador and one of the greatest artists ever born in Latin America. Also Known as a "Picasso in Latin America", Gyayasamin is an artist comparable to a national treasure who is loved and respected by all Ecuadorians. Going through a gloomy historical period, the artist criticized Latin America's political and social reality. He also used his works to denounce the injustice faced by weak people in society including poor laborers, indigenous people, the needy and those of African origin. Therefore, his works reflect Ecuador's history, culture, tradition, folk culture, identity and religion. ● Guayasamin's spirit of the times and adventurous spirit are visible as he says, "I have painted as if I were desperately screaming and my scream has been added to all the screams expressing humiliation, the anguish of the time that we have had to live." ● The exhibition shares the artist's oil paintings, watercolors and drawings of the highest quality which have been designated as Ecuador's official cultural heritage which are owned by the Guayasamin Foundation. The event also looks into the artist's philosophy and attitude against historical oppression, discrimination and persecution inflicted on people, through his interview videos and archives. ■ SAVINA Museum of Contemporary Art
