『어디로 가야 하는가』는 제주현대미술관이 처음 기획한 장기 프로젝트로 미술관 주변 숲속을 무대로 예술작품과 자연이 동화되는 과정을 보여주는 새로운 전시형식이다. 제주현대미술관은 그동안 미술관 주변 마을과 연계하여 예술적 감성과 이색적인 경험을 제공하는 '아트저지' 프로젝트를 계속해 왔는데,『어디로 가야 하는가』역시 '아트저지'의 2020년 프로젝트로 마련했다.

전시작품은 조각가 이승수의 작품세계로 구성했다. 전시명과 동명인 전시작품 「어디로 가야 하는가」는 폐기물과 시멘트의 조합인 6점의 군상과 제주 화산석으로 만들어진 6점의 군상으로 이루어져 있다. 제주도가 안고 있는 '개발과 보존'이라는 모순된 과제에 대한 문제의식에서 출발한 이 작품은 2019년 부산 바다미술제에 출품되었던 작품의 연작이기도 하다. 이번 전시에서는 시간의 흐름에 따른 조형물의 변화를 관찰하며 자연의 복원력과 그 치유 과정을 기록하는 것이 색다르다. 장기 프로젝트인 이 전시는 약 5년의 시간 동안 숲 속에서 지속될 예정으로, 시간이 흐를수록 조금씩 이끼가 끼고, 작은 식물이 돋아나는 등 자연물과 동화를 이루며 변해갈 군상의 모습을 통해 현시대의 주요 이슈인 환경의 문제를 되돌아보는 시간이 될 것이다. ● 매해 미술관을 방문하는 관람객들은 계절이 바뀌고 한 해 한 해의 세월이 지남에 따라 이 군상들이 어떤 모습으로 변해 가는지 생생하게 직시하며, '자연과 공존하는 삶'이라는 문제의식에 깊이 공감하는 기회가 되었으면 한다. ■ 제주현대미술관

시멘트와 각종 쓰레기 오브제로 제작된 군상들을 통해 관람객들의 불편한 시선을 의도하고자 하였다. 이러한 시선은 작가가 제주의 풍경을 바라보는 불편한 시선에서 비롯되었다. 5년이란 시간 동안 숲 속에서 군상들의 변화되는 과정을 통해 '자연과 공존하는 삶'이라는 문제의식에 깊이 공감하는 기회가 되었으면 한다. ■ 이승수

『Where Should We Go』 is the first long-term project organized by Jeju Museum of Contemporary Art. With the forest surrounding the museum as the background, this is a new exhibition style aiming to show the process of assimilation between artworks and nature. Jeju Museum of Contemporary Art has carried out 'Art Jeoji' projects to provide artistic sensitivity and memorable experiences to people through associations with the village neighboring the museum. Where Should We Go is also prepared as an extension of the 'Art Jeoji' project. ● This exhibition consists of the works of sculptor Lee Seungsoo. The exhibited works titled Where Should We Go, the same as the exhibition title, comprise six sculptured groups created from waste and cement alongside six group works created using Jeju volcanic rock. The works were first created with a critical mind on 'development and preservation', the contradictory issue faced by Jeju Island faces, and they were submitted to the 2019 Busan Sea Art Festival. This exhibition is unconventional in that changes in the artworks can be observed through the passage of time. Both the restorative force of nature and its process of healing will be recorded. This long-term exhibition will last about five years in the forest. This will be an opportunity to reflect on environmental problems, major issues of the present day, through groups of sculptures that will change as they assimilate with natural objects, and moss and small plants grow on them as time passes. ● Visitors to the museum will see vividly how the groups change as time goes by season after season, year after year. Hopefully, it will provide the chance to deeply sympathize with an awareness of the 'coexistence of life and nature.' ■ Jeju Museum of Contemporary Art

These group figures produced with cement and various types of waste aim to attract the uncomfortable gaze of viewers. This perspective originated from the artist's uncomfortable gaze on the landscape of Jeju. It is hoped that visitors will have an opportunity to sympathize with a critical mind on the issue of 'life coexisting with nature' through the changing process of his art over five years. ■ Lee Seungsoo
