규칙들 ● 월요일 저녁 6시 40분, 언제나처럼 도로는 막혀있었다. 서울의 퇴근 시간을 가로질러 금천구에 있는 정기훈의 작업실까지 제시간에 도착하겠다는 나의 마음은 욕심이었다. 도시에서 나고 자랐음에도 도심의 출퇴근 시간에 차로 이동하는 것은 언제나 예상을 뛰어넘는다. 불행인지 다행인지 예술계 종사자로서 나는 이 교통체증을 피해 왔었다. 물론 남들과 같은 시간에 출근하며 시간 단위로 일을 한 적도 있었다. 그때 나는 업무 강도와 상관없이 시간으로 환산됐었다.

정기훈의 작업실은 다른 작가들과 함께 있는 곳이었다. 정체를 빠져나와 가까스로 도착했을 때 그곳은 도로 위 공기와는 어딘지 모르게 달랐다. 마치 다른 시간이 흐르는 것 같았다. 그의 공간에 들어갔을 때 그 느낌은 틀리지 않았다. 정기훈은 자신만의 시간 규칙을 만들고 있었고 그에 따라 반복적이고 규칙적으로 생활하고 있었다. 작가치고는 밋밋한 그의 설명은 어딘지 모르게 설득력 있었다. 정기훈은 '스스로(自) 규칙을 만든다'는 의미에서 '자의 1) (自意)적'이라는 말을 자주 사용했다. 그렇지만, 오히려 그럴수록 "일정한 질서를 무시하고 제멋대로 하는 2) " '자의-적(恣意的)'이라는 사전적 의미를 지울 수는 없었다. 엄밀한 의미에서 스스로 만든 규칙이라는 말은 성립되지 않는다. '규칙 3) '이란, 사회에서 많은 사람들이 공통으로 지키기 위해 만드는 것이기 때문이다. 그런 의미에서 다수가 전제되지 않고 자신만을 위해 만든 '규칙'은 역설적으로 지킬 필요가 없는 쓸모없는 규칙이 되고 만다. 즉, 자신의 역할을 상실한 규칙이 되는 것이다. 정기훈은 왜 그런 의미 없는 규칙들을 만들고 시간에 따라 수행하고 노동하는 것일까.

문득 퇴근 시간 집으로 가는 사람들로 가득했던 도로를 생각한다. 다 같이 출근하고 퇴근하는 사람들, 누구보다 바쁘게 지하철역으로 달려가는 사람들, 가족을 부양하기 위해 시간을 쪼개는 사람들. 그들 속에 통용되고 있는 삶의 규칙들이 나에게도 맞는지, 그리고 그것들이 작가 스스로 만든 규칙과 정말 다른 것인지 아니면 다르지 않은 것인지. ■ 김가원

Rules ● It was 6:40 on a Monday evening. The roads were clogged as usual. I soon realized that I was too ambitious in hoping to arrive at Ki Hoon Jeong's studio in Geumcheon-gu on time by making my way through Seoul's rush hour congestion. I was born and raised in the city, but I find that traveling during the extreme traffic hours in the city center always defies expectations. Fortunately, or unfortunately, as the case may be, as someone who works in the art field, I had been privileged to avoid these traffic gridlocks whenever possible. Of course, I once used to work on an hourly basis by going to work at the same time as everyone else. In those days, my value used to be converted into time regardless of the intensity of my work. ● Ki Hoon Jeong's studio was shared with several other artists. Barely managing to get there after escaping the traffic jam, I immediately noticed that the atmosphere there was somewhat different from that on the road. It was as if a separate stream of time was flowing through that place. This feeling was confirmed as soon as I entered his space. Ki Hoon Jeong was constructing his own rule of time and was leading a routine and systematic life accordingly. His explanation sounded a bit flat for an artist, but somehow, I found it rather convincing. Ki Hoon Jeong often mentioned the term 'according to one's own will (自意 1) )' in his reference to 'making one's own (自) rules'. However, the more I pondered, the less I could neglect the dictionary definition of the term 'arbitrary (恣意的 2) )', which means "acting according to a personal whim rather than the established order". Strictly speaking, a self-made rule does not make sense, as a 'rule 3) ' is built to be shared and abided by many people in society. In that sense, a 'rule' made only for oneself, by excluding the premise on the notion of the majority, then paradoxically becomes a pointless rule that does not need to be followed. In other words, it becomes a rule that has lost its capacity. So, why does Ki Hoon Jeong come up with such useless rules to carry on and work with according to his own sense of time? ● This suddenly brings me back to the scene of the road bustling with people heading home during peak hours. The image is replete with people commuting to and from work en masse; those hurriedly racing towards the subway station faster than anyone else; and those striving to carve out their own precious time to support their families. I wonder if the rules of life shared by all these people would be appropriate for me also and if these rules are actually different from the rule created by the artist himself. ■ Kim Kaweon
