황성원 작가의 네 번째 개인전이 이길이구 갤러리에서 개최한다. 『나 - 길 · 빛 · 관계』라는 제목의 이번 전시는 빛과 함께 한 작가의 인위적인 움직임의 결과로 만들어진 오묘하고 몽환적인 이미지를 선보인다. 어디로 향할지 도저히 가늠하기 어려운 렌즈가 사물에 부딪혀 만든 결과, 즉 빛의 파장과 충돌을 마다하지 않고 시시각각 사물의 다양성과 만나 새로운 그 무엇이 되는 과정을 보여주고 있다. ● 황성원 작가의 사진 작업은 피사체에 대한 단순한 시각적 재현을 거부하는 동시에 기타 조형 매체와 같이 사진이 작가의 일방적 자기표현이라는 관점 역시 부정하고 있다. 작가의 작업은 피사체와 작가 사이의 우연의 만남이라고 할 수 있다. 피사체라는 타자와 나 자신이 서로 무의식적으로 만나 이루어지는 일종의 대화를 사진으로 기록하고 있는 것이다. 무엇을 찍는지 의식되지 않고 알지도 못한 상태에서 카메라 렌즈를 열어두고 찍는 과정을 통해 무엇인가가 사진이 된다. 그렇게 해서 사진에는 의식된 과거의 기억과는 다른 전혀 새로운 사고나 창조적 관념으로 가득 차 있다. 의식적 내용이 사라져서 끝내는 무의식이 되어버리는 것과 마찬가지로 한 번도 의식화되어 본 일이 없는 새로움이 작가의 작업에는 녹아 있다. ● 무의식적이고 때로는 비현실적이고 비합리적기도 한 이 사진은 속도와 행위가 보다 더 강화되면서 일상적인 현실세계에서 볼 수 없는 새로운 세계를 보여준다. 그렇게 해서 탄생한 작품 명은 'Untitled' 로 이름을 부여받는 대신 경계가 없는 자유를 누리길 바라는 마음을 보여준다. 매분 매초 다른 빛과 작가의 인위적인 행위, 그리고 순간의 온도와 공기는 매번 새로운 장면을 만들어낸다. 이러한 존재 자체만으로도 이미 작품은 유의미한 어떤 것이 되며 아울러 짙은 회화적인 성격을 드러낸다. 작가는 이처럼 사진 작업에 회화적인 요소를 부여해왔다. 작가가 무의식중에 잡아낸 피사체들은, 사진의 결과물은 오로지 색채, 흔들림, 빛, 무수한 선들의 흔적으로 가득한 추상회화를 연상시킨다. 서로에게 스며들어 새로운 것이 되는 것을 두려워하지 않는 속성의 결과물이 작가의 사진작업이기도 하다. "예상치 못한 삶의 여정에서 경험된, 지금도 겪으면서 알아가고 있는 인생길에서 따뜻하게 다가왔던 빛이 오늘도 살아가게 하는 위로와 격려가 된다"라는 작가의 말처럼 이번 전시를 통해서 황성원 작가의 시선과 세계관을 통해 우리들 자신의 자아를 재해석하며 위안 받을 수 있는 기회가 되길 바란다. ■ 백수연

The upcoming exhibition THE SELF by Hwangsungwon's 4th solo show(2GIL29 GALLERY, 4 - 17th of December) will depict light and the artist's artificial movement. T H E S E L F shows the process of confusion of the camera lens clashing with light waves and diverse objects, which results in a somewhat 'new' image. ● Hwangsungwon's photographs deny the quality of objective replication and also disagrees with the idea of a one sided emotional expression by the person behind the lens. However the works are coincidental results and records of certain conversations between the subject and the artist. When the camera lens is open in the process of taking a photograph, an image depicting the 'subconscious' becomes the output. Therefore, the artist's works contain creative philosophy which is far from ordinary memories from the past and a certain sense of 'newness' is melted in the artist's photographs. ● The somewhat unrealistic and irrational photographs suggest new dimensions that can not be observed in reality through intensive movement and speed. As a result of this process, all of the works are named 'Untitled' in aspiration of the works to enjoy freedom not being restrained in certain genres. Every second and minute of light, the artist's artificial movement, and atmosphere animates the imagery. These images contain painterly elements such as colors, movement, light, and countless lines which resemble abstract paintings. Moreover, the works show that the artist is not afraid of creating an alien form caused by coincidental immersion between different elements. "In our journey of unexpectations, the warm light that brightens our life comforts and encourages our day to day." As the artist mentioned, I hope this exhibition offers a moment of re-discovery of individuals' ego and comforting souls. ■ Sooyeon Baek
