최근 세계의 바다에서는 여러 비극적인 현장이 목격된다. 2014년 한국 서해에서는 320 여명의 학생들이 사라진 세월호 사건이 있었고, 지중해는 국경을 넘는 많은 이민자와 난민들의 무덤이 되었다. 2011년 나는 일본 요코하마에 머물며 처음으로 바닷물을 끓여 소금을 만들었고 그 소금은 후쿠시마 원자력 발전소에서 나온 방사능 물질을 포함하고 있음이 판명되었다. 소금이 인간에게 지닌 유용함 너머 차별, 탐욕, 경계, 만남 등 복잡한 의미를 가진 오브제라는 점에 주목해 나는 세계 여러 곳에서 소금을 만들어 그것으로 바닷물에 녹아있는 세계와 인간의 현실을 시각화할 수 있는 작품을 ‘소금은 말한다'라는 제목의 연작으로 만들어 나가고자 한다. 이 소금들이 관객의 머리, 어깨, 가방 신발에 살짝 묻게 되어 전시 공간 바깥 어딘가로 옮겨지기를 바란다. ● 『서쪽과 동쪽, 남쪽과 북쪽』을 제작하기 위해 국내 다섯 군데 장소를 방문하여 바닷물을 구해 작업한 설치작이다. 10개월 동안 진도 팽목항, 강원도 고성, 태안 만리포, 기장 고리, 여수 신덕마을을 방문해 바닷물을 채취한 뒤 각각 끓여 자염으로 만들었다. 이 소금을 태평염전의 나노소금과 섞은 뒤 전시장에 놓았다. 허공에 걸린 소금 주머니에서 미세한 소금이 관람객의 몸과 옷에 보이지 않게 떨어진다. ■ 최선

In recent years the sea has been a place of tragic accidents. In 2014, almost 320 Korean high school students died drowned in Sewol Ferry in the western sea of Korea, and in the Mediterranean, many immigrants and refugees have been dying while passing frontiers. My first experience of making salt was in Yokohama, Japan, in 2011 and this salt was revealed to contain radioactive materials from the Fukushima Nuclear Plants. Beyond its usefulness for human beings, sea salt is a complex object with the idea of discrimination, greed, barrier, and encounter. Therefore, I'd like to keep making salt in various places in the world to visualize the human reality melted in the seawater. This would be the project "Salt Tells." The salt is feebly attached to the audience's heads, shoulders, bags, and shoes to be transferred to somewhere outside of the space. ● For the installation of West and East, South and North in Salt Museum in Jeungdo, I had visited five places in Korea in order to get seawater during the month of October: Pengmok Harbor in Jindo, Goseong in Ganwon Province, Manripo beach in Taean, Gori in Gijang-gun, and Sindeok Village in Yeosu. I boiled the seawater of each place to get some salt, and then mixed it with the nano-salt, product of Taepyung Salt Farm. In the gallery, salt pouches are hung in the air where fine salt falls into the body and clothing of the spectator subtly. ■ Sun Choi
