슬로우 시티인 증도는 긴장하며 살던 것들을 내려놓게 한다. 높은 건물 하나 없이 펼쳐진 간척지는 빛과 바람이 막힘없이 제 할 일을 했다. 쉬지 않는 빛과 바람은 소금을 만들어낼 뿐만 아니라 내면에 숨겨져 있던 소리들을 끌어내는 힘이 있다. 모든 이에게는 내면의 방이 있다. 작가는 작가의 내면의 방 안에서 나오는 소리들이 어떤 말들을 하고 있는지 듣는 연습을 했다. 들은 것을 믿음으로, 소리를 종합 예술로 표현해보았다. 외면하고 싶었던 관계와 화해하고 내가 정말로 가야할 곳을 향해 가는 것 그리고 스스로 자아를 깎아내며 살아내는 것들에 대해 이야기 한다. 당신의 방에는 어떤 소리들이 들리는가?

겸손이 우리에게 ● 사람은 내면에 각자의 방을 가지고 있다. 그 방 안에 우리는 자신의 생각대로 많은 것들을 채워 넣는다. 신안군은 1004의 섬이라 불리고, 증도는 기독교 순교자의 피가 흘려진 숭고한 땅이다. 그럼에도 이 땅에는 편견과 오해가 있고, 고집스러움이 남아있다. 햇볕과 바람은 숨을 쉬듯 소금을 만들어내고, 물의 차오름과 빠짐이 반복되는 이 곳은 어딘지 피상적으로 느껴졌다. 그러나 빛과 바람은 정직했다. 신안에 처음 도착한 날, 그날의 햇빛과 바람을 기억한다. 내 방 안에 차 있던 미움과 역겨움과 수치심이 걷히고, 밝은 빛이 가득 채워졌다. 당신의 방은 어떤가? 당신의 방에도 나에게 닿은 빛과 바람이 닿길 바란다. 화해가 이루어질 수 없는 곳에 화해가 이루어지길 소망한다.

우리는 영원으로 ● 레지던시에 입주하기 전에 보통 기도를 통해 얻은 단어를 가지고 시작한다. 「소금 같은, 예술」을 위해 기도할 때 '빛'이라는 단어가 계속해서 떠올랐다. 입주 후 증도에서 약 2개월간 생활하면서 느낀 것은 자연이 만들어낸 작품들이 이미 완벽하다는 점이었다. 짱뚱어들의 움직임이 만들어내는 소리, 게들이 토해낸 흙으로 만들어진 구 드로잉들, 바람에 흔들리는 물결들, 햇볕에 붉게 물든 칠면초, 수장된 배의 골조들, 소금창고에 쌓여있는 소금 등은 더할 것, 뺄 것 없는 증도의 작품들이었다. 이 중에서도 석양은 가장 강렬한 순간이자, 소유하고 싶은 찰나였다. 하얗게 발광하던 해는 지평선에 가까이 다가올 수록 강렬한 붉은 빛을 내며 순식간에 사라졌다. 어느 순간 지는 해를 쫓아다니는 것이 하나의 예술 활동이 되었다. 반면 이 곳 증도에서 살고 있는 주민들에게는 석양의 순간은 익숙한 일상이었다. 전시장 안에 그 석양의 찰나를 담을 때 익숙함은 어떻게 전환될까? 소금박물관은 일제시대에 지어진 건축물이다. 건축사에 따르면 때로는 소금의 창고로, 때로는 자재의 창고로 사용되었다. 특이하게도 전시장에는 창이 존재하지 않는다. 두꺼운 돌로 만들어진 벽은 철저하게 외부를 차단한다. 전시장에 오래 머무른 후 나올 때 다른 시공간에서 나온 듯한 느낌을 받는다. 「우리는 영원으로」는 바닥에 창을 설치함으로부터 시작한다. 건물의 천장 골격에 설치된 프로젝터는 유리를 향해 영상을 투사한다. 영상의 첫 화면은 붉은색으로부터 시작해 지평선에 다다른 해 사진으로 축소되어진다. 비트맵으로 변환된 해 사진의 픽셀들은 확대되고 확대되어진다. 유리에 투사된 비디오는 전시공간의 천장을 향해 재투사된다. 디스플레이에 재생되는 다른 채널의 비디오에서는 보편적 이미지의 3D 해(빨간 구)가 실제 녹음된 해의 대기중의 소리와 함께 왜곡되어 하나의 면이 되어지는 과정을 보여준다. 바닥에 설치된 창에 재생되는 영상은 빛이 우리를 비추고 빛을 받은 우리가 다시 위로 반사되어지는, 영원을 향하여 가는 모습을, 디스플레이에 재생되어지는 영상은 영원을 소유하고 싶은 갈망을 담고 있다. ■ 권현아

Jeongdo is a slow city where it strips you of life's tensions. In this vast reclaimed land, light and wind move freely without the interference of tall buildings. Not only do ceaseless light and wind create salt, but they also draw out the sounds buried deep within a person. Everyone has chambers in the interior of their selves. The artist practiced listening to the sounds coming from her inner chambers. In faith, she put together the things she heard and recreated them into synthetic art. The sounds from the artist's inner chamber speak of mending long avoided relationships, of heading towards the right direction, and of shedding her ego. What sounds can be heard from your inner chamber?

Chambers exist in the human mind and we pack the chambers with our thoughts and our beliefs. Shinan-gun is called the 'Angels' island' while Jeungdo is known to be a sublime land where a martyr's blood had been shed. The sunlight and the wind produce salt like the evergoing breath of human life, and each day the tide comes in and out without fail. Yet, this small island faces issues of prejudice, misunderstanding, and stubbornness. Nevertheless, the light and wind are honest and true. The artist remembers the shine and breeze upon her first arrival. The hate, antipathy and shame were lifted and cleared and in the cleared space of her chamber shone a full and complete light. What is your inner-chamber like? Artist hopes the same light and breeze will reach you. May there be reconciliation in places where it's deemed unlikely.

Generally, the artist starts a residency with a word she receives from her prayer. The word, 'Light' was continuously highlighted in her mind when she prayed for the artist residency, 'Art Like Salt.' 2 months into her residency program, she felt the scenery from nature in Jeungdo is already a work of art, complete in its form. From the sound the Blue-spotted-mud-hopper's makes, to the mud sphere drawings made by the crabs, the wave patterns in the pond, the red colour of the plant named 'Shrubby Sea-Blite', and to the burial-ed ship structure at sea and the huge amounts of salts inside of the salt storage were artworks with nothing to add. Among them, watching the sunset was the most remarkable moment she wanted to own. The radiating sun turned fluorescent red as it closed down the horizon and all of the sudden, it disappeared. Chasing the sunset became her art practice. Whereas, for the locals, the sunset was a part of their daily lives. What if the artist brings the sunset inside of the gallery? ● The Salt Museum in Jeungdo is a structure built in Korea during the Japanese occupation. According to architectural history, sometimes it has been used as a salt warehouse, and sometimes it has been used as a general storage. Unusually this space didn't include any windows. The thickness of the stone walls thoroughly blocked out the outside world. After spending some time inside the salt gallery, one gets the feeling of coming out from a different time and space as he/she leaves the place. 「To eternity」 begins with installing windows with the wood frame on the floor. For the first channel video, the projector is installed on the salt museum's roof structure towards the glasses. The first scene of the moving image is the red colour from the Sun, and the plane red colour is shrunk into the photograph of the sunset. After that, the moving image shows the bitmap picture of the sunset to be enlarging. The video is projected on the glass and the video on the glass is reflected to the ceiling. The first scene of another video-channel on display shows the progress of distorting. With an actual record of solar sound, the conservative 3D image of the Sun slowly changes to the red-plane. ● The moving image playing on the floor window represents praising the light that shines upon us and the direction towards eternity. Another moving image played on display represents the craving mind to possess the everlasting life. ■ Hyun Ah Kwon
