도시의 우리 Our Life in a City

서울시청 하늘광장 갤러리는 2020년 11월 16일부터 12월 11일까지 2020년 하늘광장 갤러리 공모선정작 전시 『도시의 우리』를 온라인 개최합니다. 기획자와 평론가, 다양한 장르의 아티스트들이 협업하는 시각 예술 그룹 PISA의 이장로 디렉터가 기획한 본 전시는 복잡다단한 문화의 집결지이자 생존의 장으로서의 도시 서울을 다섯 작가의 작품을 통해 살펴봅니다. ● 참여 작가들은 각자의 작품에서 테크놀로지를 활용해 복잡하고 철저하게 조직된 유닛을 제작함으로써 현대의 사회상을 표상하거나, 욕망과 환상이 혼재하는 우리 내면의 심리적 풍경을 그려냅니다. 이들의 작품은 불완전한 우리 세계의 무상함을 드러내 보이는 동시에, 그럼에도 불구하고 무한한 생명력을 지니며 끊임없이 미래를 향해 진보해 가는 도시의 모습을 각기 다른 시각으로 재현하고 있습니다. ■ 서울시청 하늘광장 갤러리

현대의 도시는 많은 이들이 살아가는 생존의 장이자 문화의 집결지가 되었다. 한국에서의 서울은 그러한 도시의 특성이 가장 잘 드러나는 대도시이자, 우리의 경험을 통해 미래를 바라보게 되는 잠재력의 공간이다. 그러한 상황은 이번 전시에 중요한 실마리를 제공해 주었으며, 두 가지의 이야기로 공간에 풀어내려 한다.

이야기의 첫 장은 지속적으로 나아가는 우리 삶으로부터 시작된다. 그것은 현재의 우리가 너무나도 당연하게 이용하고 있는 기술과 구조로 이어진다. 세밀하게 계획되고 조립되어 있는 각 유닛들은, 다분화되어 있는 우리의 사회와 역사처럼 각각의 시나리오를 제공한다. 여러 사회적 현상을 반영하는 이미지들은, 그 시대의 작가적 연구이자 행동으로, 우리가 현대 도시인으로서 살아갈 태도에 대해 이야기한다.

이어지는 장에선 현대인의 심리적 풍경을 드러낸다. 각자의 경험이 녹아들어 개인화된 심리와 감각은, 불안정한 경계로 인간을 단정 짓지 않고, 작가의 내면적 이야기들을 통해 공유된다. 당연하게도 우리의 내면은 명확히 규정될 수 없고, 경험될 뿐이다. 그럼에도 우리가 서로의 감정과 심리를 받아들일 수 있는 까닭은, 그것이 가지고 있는 인류 보편적 DNA에 기반하고 있을 것이다. 결국 두 개의 장으로 나누어진 작가들의 이야기는 우리의 모습을 다양한 측면에서 바라본 시선의 결과물로, 현시대 도시의 삶으로 나타난다.

많은 사람들이 살아가는 도시는 필연적으로, 끊이지 않는 변화와 적응의 연장선 위에 유지되고 있다. 매 순간이 미완성의 연속일 수밖에 없기에, 우리들은 늘 변화를 추구하여 이전보다 진보된 모두를 위해 노력하고 애쓰며 살아간다. 변화와 진보된 미래... 우리가 늘 이야기해온 것들이다. 그러므로 이번 전시에선 현재를 위해 우리가 스쳐가는 삶의 이미지를 재조명함과 동시에, 앞으로의 미래를 위한 휴머니즘적 풍경으로 나아가려 한다. ■ 이장로

PISA (디렉터 이장로)는 기획자와 평론가, 다양한 장르의 시각 예술 작가들로 구성되어 있으며, 현 세대를 반영할 수 있는 실험적 미의 가치와 지속적 예술 생존을 실현하고 있다. 작가들의 개인전 이외에도 서울시립미술관 SeMA 창고, 서초 서리풀 청년 아트 갤러리, 헤이리 예술가 마을, 수원 대안공간 눈 등 다양한 미술관 혹은 갤러리에서 전시와 세미나를 기획하였다. ■ PISA

Seoul City's Sky Plaza Gallery hosts its public contest selection exhibition Our Life In A City online from November 16 to December 11, 2020. Curated by Jangrho Lee, Director of PISA, a visual art group where planners, critics, and artists from the various genres work together, the exhibition examines Seoul as a place where complex cultures converge and a place where people make a living through the works of the five artists. ● Each of the participating artists uses technology to create complicated and tightly organized units in order to present the social aspects in modern times or depict our psychological landscape where desire and fantasy mingle. Their works reveal that nothing is permanent in our imperfect world, yet, at the same time, project the city's images of which has infinite vitality and has constantly improved toward the future from their own point of view. ■ Sky Plaza Gallery, Seoul City Hall

A modern city is a place where many people make a living and also a place where various cultures converge. Seoul of Korea is a megacity that well shows the characteristics of such a city and a space that has the potential to see the future through our experiences. This provides an important clue to the exhibition. In this exhibition, we talk about the space with two stories. ● The first chapter of the story begins with the mediums planned as civilization. They consist of technologies and structures we take for granted. Each unit carefully planned and assembled offers its scenario, just like our diversified society and history. The images reflecting various social phenomena are the artist's study and action of the times, meaning the manner we have as modern city people. ● The second chapter of the story shows modern city people's psychological landscape. Individualized psychology and senses melted with each one's own experiences do not define humans with unstable boundaries, but they are shared through the artist's inner stories. Unsurprisingly, our inscape is not clearly defined, but only experienced. Nevertheless, the reason why we can accept each other's feelings and psychology may be based on mankind's universal DNA. The stories of the artists divided into two chapters look at our various aspects from opposite perspectives and appear in our lives in a modern city of the times. ● The city where many people live inevitably is maintained along with the extension of constant changes and adaptation. Since every moment is endlessly unfinished, we always seek for changes and strive for what is more advanced than before. Changes and the advanced future are what we have always talked about. In this exhibition, the images of the lives we have lived will be highlighted and at the same time they will be presented as a landscape of humanism for the future. ■ Lee Jangrho
