Open Media Art Festival, Black Swan: Unpredictable Future의 주제 '블랙스완 Black Swan'은 '검은 백조'를 뜻한다. 그리고 오늘날 검은 백조는 예기치 않은, 혹은 기존의 관념을 전복하는 사례를 지칭하는 데 사용되기도 한다. 그 유래는 18세기로 거슬러 올라가는데 서구 문화에서 백조는 모두 백색이라는 변하지 않은 믿음이 오스트레일리아에서 검은 백조가 발견되면서 철저하게 그 신뢰성을 상실하게 되었다. 이후 블랙스완은 불가능하거나 혹은 존재하지 않는 것으로 믿었던 상황의 등장으로 인해 오늘날 우리가 지키고 신봉하는 모든 가치의 전복 가능성을 역설하고 있다.

저자 나심 니콜라스 탈레브 (Nassim Nicholas Taleb)는 금융위기를 겪으면서 오늘날 우리가 전혀 예측할 수 없었던, 상상할 수 없었던 사건들이 느닷없이 발생하는 현상들을 블랙스완 이론으로 설명하였다. 정보의 양이 증가하고, 삶의 속도가 빨라지면서 우리 주변에서 급격하게 변화하는 순간들, 상식을 벗어난 일들 혹은 다가오는 미래에 대하여 예측할 수 없는 일들이 발생하고 있으며 앞으로도 유사한 상황이 발생하지 않는다는 보장은 없다는 뜻이다.

이번 페스티벌은 동시대를 살아가는 예술가들에게 '예측할 수 없는 미래'를 상상하고 그것이 우리의 삶에 어떤 의미와 영향을 미치고 있는지 혹은 미치게 될지에 대한 질문으로 시작되었다. 테크놀로지의 발달은 분명 인간의 삶에 과거와 다른 광범위한 기회와 선택의 장을 가져다 주었지만, 현재를 사는 우리에게 또 다른 예기치 못한 문제들 혹은 상황과 사건들을 만들어내기도 한다. 상상할 수 없는 블랙스완이 우리 미래에 등장할 것이라면 우리는 어떤 태도로 미래를 준비해야 하는가? 그 어떤 가치와 신념도 결국은 변질될 수 있다는 진리를 인식하고 세상을 바라보았다면 인간이 대면한 오늘날의 충격과 비극은 지금과 다르지 않았을까?

본 페스티벌은 크게 4가지의 카테고리로 기획된다. 미래의 정보, 미래의 도시, 미래의 공간, 미래의 사고로 구분되는 각 파트에서는 가까운 미래에 등장할 블랙스완, 즉 예기치 않은 사건과 현상들에 대한 예술가들의 다양한 인식과 태도를 살펴보고 소개하고자 한다. 예술이라는 매체를 통해서 예측하는 미래 역시 또 다른 블랙스완의 등장으로 전복될지 모른다. 그럼에도 불구하고 '예측할 수 없었던 미래', '예측할 수 없는 미래'를 탐구하는 예술가들의 작품을 통해서 과거와는 다른 미래에 대한 준비를 모색해보고자 한다. ■ 이승아_김정연

"Black Swan," the theme of the Open Media Art Festival in Seoul, refers to a black swan. However, the Black Swan theory is often used to refer to unexpected or overturning human ideas. Its origin dates back to the 18th century when the unchanging belief that all swans are white in Western culture has lost their credibility with the discovery of black swans in Australia. Since then, the Black Swan theory has focused on the extreme impact of rare and unpredictable events and the human tendency to explain these events. It also stresses the possibility of overturning all the values we protect and believe today because of the emergence of situations that we believed were impossible or nonexistent. ● Nassim Nicholas Taleb, the author of the book The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable, explains the situation of the phenomenon of the unforeseen and unthinkable events of our life with the Black Swan theory after he has gone through a financial crisis. As vast information continuously increases and the speed of life accelerates, unpredictable events, rapidly changing moments, absurd circumstances out of common sense, or unforeseen happenings are taking place around in the upcoming future. And there is no guarantee or confidence that there will be no further events in the future. ● The OMAF in Seoul comprises four sections. They are the environment, technology, the human condition, and the human perception of the future. The different ways of examining the future, such as Black Swan in our time and the future, will be introduced and presented, which will deliver various perceptions and attitudes of the artists toward the future. The future predicted through artworks and artistic practices may be overturned by the emergence of another Black Swan. Nevertheless, OMAF in Seoul would like to investigate the future through the works of artists who explore the "unexpected future" and "unforeseen future." ■ Seungah Lee_Jyeong Yeon Kim
