어제모레 OUTDATED FUTURE

경기도미술관은 10월 13일부터 2021년 1월 17일까지 프로젝트 갤러리에서 2020 청년작가전의 마지막 프로젝트 『어제모레』전을 개최합니다. 이번 전시는 경기도미술관이 경기창작센터와 2015년부터 꾸준히 추진해온 협력사업인 퀀텀점프의 일환으로, 올해는 입주작가 박관택을 선정하여 선보입니다. ● 어제는 오늘의 과거이고 모레는 오늘의 미래입니다. 과거와 현재, 미래를 엇박자로 은유하고 있는 전시제목은 시간의 상대성과 유동성에 접근하는 전시의 면모를 보여줍니다.

작가는 『데몰리션맨』(1993), 『터미네이터』(1984/91), 『블레이드러너』(1982) 등 2020년 전후를 미래로 설정한 1980~90년대의 SF영화들을 소재로 과거의 미래가 현재 혹은 근과거가 되어버린 현 시점에서 기묘한 향수와 다층적 시간의 충돌을 인지하고 경험하게 합니다. 그것은 기억에 기반한 '인식적 시간'과 전시공간에서 물리적으로 체험하는 '경험적 시간'을 교차시키는 작업으로, 일상에서 간과해온 추상적 개념으로서의 시간을 인식하고 감각하게끔 하는 실험입니다.

이제까지 작가가 드로잉, 설치, 바람, 빛 등 다양한 요소를 활용하여 이미지를 감각하는 여러 가지 가능성을 제안해왔다면, 이번 전시에서는 시간의 흐름에 초점 맞추어 이미지에 얽힌 심리적이고 감각적인 측면을 살펴봅니다.

과거에 제작된 SF영화의 대서사는 작가가 '라이브 이미지 프린팅'이라고 부른 실시간 퍼포먼스를 통하여 2만여장의 스틸컷으로 포착되어 공간에 설치됩니다. 전시실에 놓인 노광기를 통하여 20여초에 한 장의 이미지가 생산된다면, 전시를 위해 선택된 몇 가지 영화의 압축적 시간이 600시간이 넘는 현재의 전시시간 속에 느리게 변주되는 셈입니다.

특별히 이번 전시에서는 코로나19 여파로 휴관과 개관이 반복됨에 따라 당초 계획한 1인 라이브 퍼포먼스를 영상으로 매체 전환하여 온오프라인에서 진행할 예정입니다.

빛을 매개로 인쇄한 축광지의 이미지를 순차적으로 줄 위에 배열하는 행위는 특정 세대의 기억 속에 남아있는 선형적 타임라인을 따르며, 일시적으로 형상화되었다가 사라지는 이미지의 휘발성은 쉼 없이 흘러가는 시간의 유동성을 연상시킵니다. 과거에서 예측하였던 미래의 상은 현재와 비교가 가능한 유희적이고 서사적인 레퍼런스이자, 관객의 기억과 상상을 작동시키는 시각적 매개물로 작용합니다. 이처럼 『어제모레』는 물리적 실재와 비경험적 환영(illusion)의 경계에서 이미지와 매체, 기억에 담긴 다층적 시간성을 조명하고자 합니다. ■ 강민지

Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art(GMoMA) presents Outdated Future, the final project of the 2020 Young Artist Project, from October 13, 2020 to January 17, 2021. This exhibition is part of the Quantum Jump series jointly prepared by GMoMA and Gyeonggi Creation Center since 2015, and this year's project features the resident artist Park Kwan Taeck. ● Yesterday is today's past, and the day after tomorrow is today's future. A metaphorical expression of the syncopation of the past, present, and the future, the title '어제모레'* sheds light on the exhibition's approach to the relativity and fluidity of time. By referencing sci-fi movies from the 1980s to 1990s including Demolition Man(1993), the first two Terminator movies(1984, 1991), and Blade Runner(1982), which depicted the years around 2020 as the future, the artist presents an uncanny sense of nostalgia, recognition of the clash of multi-layers of time, and the experience thereof as the so-called "future" conceived in the past, which has become the present or near-past today. In order to do so, Park intersects the memory-based "epistemic time" with the "experiential time" the viewer can physically witness in the exhibition space. This is essentially an experiment to encourage the audience to recognize and sense the abstract conceptuality of time we often take for granted in everyday life. Whereas Park's previous works focused on presenting several possibilities for sensing images by using various elements including drawings, installation, wind, and light, Outdated Future focuses on the passage of time to examine the psychological and sensorial aspects of images. *'어제모레'[eojaemorae] is Korean for 'yesterday, the day after tomorrow'

Countless stills from the epic vintage sci-fi movies will be installed across the exhibition space via a real- time performance technique Park dubbed "live image printing." Whereas the stepper in the exhibition space produces a single image in 20-some seconds through the medium of light, the concentrated moments in time curated from the movies for the exhibition will slowly unfold in variations over the course of 600 hours of the exhibition time in the present. Due to the disruptions in the museum's opening hours from the pandemic, the one-person performance originally planned will be replaced with video footage instead and made available for viewing both offline and online. The act of sequentially laying out images "printed" on phosphorescent paper with light follows the linear timeline that certain generations remember, whereas the ephemeral nature of the images, emanating light, serves as a reminder of the persistent fluidity of time. The past's vision of the future presents a playful and narrative reference to compare to the present, and serves as the visual catalyst for activating the memories and imagination of the audience. Outdated Future seeks to shed light on the multi- layered temporality inherent in the images, media, and memories that straddle the boundary between physical reality and non-experiential illusions. ■ KANG MINJI
