따로-같이 Alone-Together

전태일 50주기, 2020년은 재난으로 물들었습니다. 우리는 생존에 대한 고민을 한순간도 떨쳐낼 수 없게 되었습니다. 각자 위치에서 전염병, 기후 이변, 차별과 경제 위기에 '사회적 연대'로 견디고 또 싸우고 있습니다. ● 1970년, 전태일과 청계피복노동조합은 연대하여 함께 사는 법을 실천했습니다. 정말 어려운 지금, 우리는 어떻게, 누구와 함께 살아야 할까요? 우리 삶을 알게 모르게 둘러싼 살아있는 것들과 같이 사는 일을 생각해보는 건 어떨까요? 자라는 풀을 함부로 꺾지 않는 마음, 추운 겨울 차 안으로 숨어버린 고양이를 애타게 꺼내는 마음에서 시작하는 것은 아닐까요? 이런 마음이 오늘 전태일의 마음이 아닐까요? ● 『따로-같이』는 '공존'이라는 단어로 전태일 정신을 다시 생각합니다. 재난의 시기, 같은 시간 속에서 따로 살아가는 유기체와 어떻게 공존할 수 있을지 같이 고민하기를 요청합니다. 한국 현대미술계에서 활발히 활동하는 네 명의 시각 예술가에게 공존을 어떻게 실천하고 있는지, 혹은 실천할 수 있는지 질문을 던졌습니다. 작가들은 식물, 동물, 과일 등 일상에서 만날 수 있는 유기체들을 통해 공존에 대해서 각자의 시각에서 풀어냅니다.

반재하는 거대한 경제구조 속, 소외되고 가려지는 '노동'을 드러내 보여주는 작업을 이어왔습니다. 이번에는 과일의 유통구조를 통해, 공존을 방해하는 자본에 저항하는 메시지를 담은 작품을 전시합니다. 볼품없는 과일은 맛과 상관없이 버려집니다. "초 강대국의 고속도로" 수에즈 운하, 사과를 자르고 부수는 유통 노동자, 냉장고와 그 위에 위태롭게 묶인 사과 궤짝은 당일배송 시대 유통의 이면을 은유적으로 비판합니다. ● 강은영과 송보경은 같은 시간 속에서 다른 체계로 살아가는 생물들이 공존할 수 있는 구체적 방법을 상상하고 협업을 통해 실천에 옮깁니다. '식물상점'의 운영자이기도 한 강은영은 식물의 시각적 가능성을 식물 자체와 판화 등의 매체를 통해 탐구해온 작가입니다. 이번 전시에서 '위드플랜드(weedplant)' 작업을 통해 구매와 판매 과정에서 소외되었던 '잡초'와의 공존을 실현합니다. 판매를 위해 구입한 화분에서 자라나는 풀들의 이름을 찾았습니다. 강은영은 '잡초'가 제대로 살 수 있도록 새로운 화분을 마련하고 전시장에서 살도록 환경을 조성합니다. 송보경은 잡초의 분갈이 이전 모습을 사진으로 기록하고 기념관의 휴식공간을 꾸몄습니다. 이를 통해 일상 공간을 전시공간으로 전환합니다. ● 이미정은 그동안 일상에서 얻은 단상을 기반으로, 기능과 쓸모를 상상하게 하는 구조를 만드는 작업을 해왔습니다. 이번 전시에선 고양이가 작가의 작업실에 들어오면서 일어난 작가의 정서적 변화를 소재로 삼았습니다. 오랜 시간 고양이와 천천히 유대관계를 형성해온 경험을 자신의 시각예술 언어로 변환합니다. 고양이가 좋아하는 환경은 담은 '풍경조각'은 각각 독립적인 회화입니다. 「우리가 서로의 조각이 되는 방법」이라는 작품의 제목처럼, '풍경조각'은 각각 독립적인 회화 작품이면서, 서로 맞추어 조립하면 여러 형태와 기능을 상상할 수 있는 구조물이 됩니다. 혼자서도, 둘 혹은 셋이서 함께하는 모양을 그려볼 수 있습니다. 『따로-같이』를 관람하는 동안 내가 살아가는 환경의 사람들, 동물과 식물들, 그리고 이 모두를 에워싼 사물과 관계맺는 다양한 방식을 그려볼 수 있습니다. 어느 작가의 말처럼 따로도, 함께도 좋은 삶이 연대일 수 있음을 떠올려보면서 말이죠. "나는 언제부터인지 모르지만 감정에는 약한 편입니다. 조금만 불쌍한 사람을 보아도 마음이 언짢아 그날 기분은 우울한 편입니다. 내 자신이 너무 그러한 환경들을 속속들이 알고 있기 때문인 것 같습니다." (전태일 수기 중) ■ 아름다운청년 전태일기념관

On the 50th anniversary of the passing of Chun Taeil, we are gravely threatened by disasters. Due to infectious diseases, climate change, discrimination and economic crisis, we cannot pass a day without struggling for survival. ● In 1970, Chun Taeil and The Cheonggye Textile Labor Union practiced how to live together in solidarity. Now, How and with whom should we live in a really difficult time? Why don't you think about living with the living things that surround our lives? Doesn't it start with a heart that not to break growing grass, and that take out the cat hidden in a car in the cold winter? Isn't this the heart of Chun Taeil today? ● Alone- Together is a special exhibition that brings the issue of coexistence into the field of visual arts. Participating in this exhibition are four gifted contemporary visual artists who have pursued the practice of coexistence in their respective places. They have explored the possibility of visual solidarity with plants, animals, and the structure of coexistence and this exhibition will demonstrate how such coexistence has been achieved through their efforts. ● Jaeha Ban captured the distribution process of apples in her videotapes and displays the still-life photos of damaged and bruised apples during the exhibition. She intends to show us that fruits just harvested hundreds of kilometers away are delivered to our home in just one or two days and in the process some fruits are discarded if they fail to bear the image of 'freshness' or 'delivered directly from the farm'. Jaeha Ban displays the photos of bruised apples to illuminate the concept of labor hidden in the distribution process. ● Artists Kang Eun young and Song Bokyung envision concrete ways where creatures from different systems can coexist and then put the vision into artworks through collaborative work. Kang Eun young, who is also running a 'singmul-sangjum'(a plant store), has paid special attention to plants as a subject in visual art using the media of prints. During this exhibition, she will concentrate on a coexistence with nameless plants or weeds which have been disregarded in the process of purchasing and selling. Usually, Kang cannot extract even a small weed in the yard and tries to find the name of an unknown grass blown into the ground. During the exhibition, she finds these unknown plants their names and creates for them an environment in the exhibition hall where they can continue a proper, not parasitic, life. Song Bokyung takes the photos of these plants and displays them in the memorial hall lounge, creating a space for special exhibition. What has been regarded interrupting or insignificant turns into small enjoyment. ● Lee Mijung has been working on a structural art work that allows us to imagine function and usability based on the impression we get from our daily lives. Since the day when a stray cat accidentally came to her studio, artist Lee Mijung has grown closer to various cats inside and outside the studio. During the exhibition, she expresses her own experience of forming relationships with these cats over the course of two years in the language of visual art. Lee Mijung, who has closely observed how animals coexist even though they live in different systems, will exhibit structures and drawings that reflect human life while using cats as a motif. She adopts the viewpoints of both humans and cats and recreates structures that are divested of their functions and utilities. ● While appreciating the exhibition Alone-Together, we hope that you will visualize diverse ways to build relations with the people, animals and plants in your environment and also with all the objects that surround them. As a writer once said, you will realize that solidarity is a life that is good whether alone or together. ● "I do not know when it started, but I become easily emotional. If I see a person in a pitiful condition, it hurts me so much and I spend the whole day feeling gloomy. I think it is because I am very familiar with such circumstances."
