인천아트플랫폼은 '2020 다시 만나고 싶은 작가'로 선정된 문소현의 개인전 『발견된 위치 없음(Location Not Found)』을 개최한다. ● 'IAP 다시 만나고 싶은 작가'는 해마다 개최되는 레지던시 입주작가 결과보고 전시 기간 중 초청된 전문가의 심사와 관람객의 투표로 한 명의 작가를 선정하여, 창작 지원금과 개인전 개최를 지원하는 전(前) 입주작가 대상 후속 지원 프로그램이다.

문소현은 『2019 플랫폼 아티스트』 展에서 조르주 바타유(Georges Bataille)의 소설을 읽으며 떠올린 이미지를 드로잉하고, 이를 가상공간의 전시로 구현한 무빙 이미지 작업 「드로잉 전시」(2019)로 예술성과 실험성을 인정받아 '2020 다시 만나고 싶은 작가'로 선정되었다. ● 작가는 현대사회에서 인간이 처한 상황과 구조화된 욕망에 관심을 가지고, 자신이 제작한 무대와 퍼펫(Puppet)으로 서사 구조가 있는 스톱모션 애니메이션 영상을 만들어왔다. 그러다 보니 자신의 작업 속 미니어처 세상과 현실 사이의 경계가 흐릿해지고, 작품 속 인물의 움직임과 실제 사람의 행동 사이의 혼란을 느끼기도 했다. 최근에는 우리에게 익숙한 실제 세계로 그 무대를 옮겨 관람객이 서사를 완성하는 방식의 영상 설치 작업을 전개하고 있다.

이번 전시에서 선보이는 신작 「발견된 위치 없음」은 '드로잉 전시'의 무빙 이미지가 14채널로 확장된 형태로, 동일한 작업방식을 취하지만 실재하는 공간, 즉 전시가 진행되는 인천아트플랫폼 B동 전시장을 직접적인 무대로 활용한다. 작가는 전시장의 통로와 가벽, 구석이나 창, 계단과 같이 관람객이 마주하는 공간 곳곳을 작업에 적극적으로 개입시킨다. 스크린 속의 공간은 관람객이 위치하는 공간임과 동시에, 작가에 의해 변형되고 파편화되어 존재하지 않는 또 다른 공간이기도 하다.

「발견된 위치 없음」은 이전 작업과 마찬가지로 에로티시즘을 정면으로 다룬 조르주 바타유의 소설 『불가능』을 주요 모티브로 삼았다. 특히, 바타유가 익사하는 신체를 "양손을 잔뜩 오그린" 형태로 묘사한 구절은 작업의 시작점이 되었다. 매음굴을 전전하며 집착적으로 써 내려간 그의 자전적인 소설에서는 어둠과 죽음, 욕망과 공허함, 그리고 불가능에 대한 이미지가 가득하다. 작가는 여기에서 포착한 언캐니한(uncanny) 감각을 드로잉하거나 젤 왁스를 사용하여 형상화한 신체를 만들어 끊임없이 움직이는 존재로 설정한다.

작가는 평소 물속에서 굴절되고 왜곡되는 신체의 형상에 호기심을 가져왔다. 수면 아래에서 끊임없이 변형되고 와해되는 신체의 일부분은 다른 차원의 신체성을 지닌 것으로 여겨진다. 마치 포르노그래피에서 여성의 신체를 다루는 방식과 유사하다. 남성의 욕구에 의해 필요한 부분만 짜깁기 되어 변형되고 이접된 신체는 가능한 것 같지만 불가능한 형상처럼 느껴진다. 작업 속 신체는 실재하지만 감추고 싶은 이미지가 그대로 발화한 모습이며, 부정하고 싶은 우리의 욕망의 형상이기도 하다. 이처럼 완성되지 못하고 불안정한 신체는 작가가 만들어낸 공간 속에 부유하며 새로운 시간성을 창조하고, 작가가 설정해 놓은 비현실적 요소와 뒤섞여 전시장을 불가능한 공간이자 발견될 수 없는 장소로 기능하도록 만든다.

작가는 삶에 대한 욕망과 그 욕망이 탈락했을 때 절망감을 느낀다. 하지만 여기서 포착한 감각을 가지고 작업하는 것으로 삶의 위안을 삼는다. 마치, 바타유가 "밤(죽음과 쾌락)을 사랑하는 것"을 삶의 동력으로 여기며 (역설적이게도) 살아남기 위해 발버둥을 치듯, 스크린과 전시 공간 사이를 누비며 '불가능의 공간에서' 새로운 장소를 발견하고, "밤을 사랑하는데 필요한 힘"에 대해 깊이 사유하길 바란다. ■ 이은진

Incheon Art Platform hosts the solo exhibition Location Not Found of MOON Sohyun. ● The 'IAP The Most Memorable Artist of the Year' is a follow-up program for former resident artists which involves the selection of one artist during the Residency Artists' Exhibition hosted each year through evaluation by invited experts and votes of visitors, as well as supporting the artist with a creative support fund and holding solo exhibitions. ● MOON Sohyun was selected as 'The Most Memorable Artist of the Year 2020' for the artist's artistry and experimentalism in the moving image work Drawing Exhibition （2019) in which the artist drew images inspired by reading a novel by Georges Bataille. The images drawn by the artist have been realized to an exhibition in virtual space in the Platform Artists 2019. ● Taking an interest in the situation faced by humans in contemporary society and of structuralized desires, the artist has been creating stop-motion animation images having a narrative structure with a self-made stage and a puppet. By doing so, the boundary between the miniature world within the artist's work and reality becomes blurred confusing the artist of the movement of the character within the work and the behavior of an actual person. Recently, the artist continues video installation of a narrative which is to be completed by the audience by moving the stage to the actual world that is familiar to us. ● Location Not Found, which is newly presented in this exhibition, is a form of the moving image of the 'Drawing Exhibition' that has expanded to 14 channels. Although the same working method is employed, the actual space, that is the IAP Building B Gallery where the exhibition is to take place will be utilized as a stage itself. The artist actively involves every space imaginable such as a hallway, a temporary wall, a corner, a window or stairs in the exhibition that the audience may come across. The space within the screen is not only a space where the audience is located, but also another space transformed and fragmented by the artist that is non-existent. ● Like the artist's previous work, Location Not Found uses Georges Bataille's novel The Impossible (L'Impossible), which takes a head-on approach to eroticism, as the main motif. In particular, the passage in which Bataille describes a drowning body in the form "overly curling both hands" has become the starting point of the work. In his autobiographical novel, which was obsessively written wandering the brothels, there are many images of darkness and death, desire and emptiness, and the impossible. The artist has created a body, which was given shape by drawing or using gel wax to capture a sense of uncanniness inspired by the novel, and set as an endlessly moving being. ● The artist has always been fascinated by the shape of the body in water which becomes distorted and misrepresented. To the artist, the portion of the body that is endlessly distorted and broken up under water is regarded as if having a physicality of a different dimension. It is similar to how the bodies of women are treated in pornography. Only parts that are necessary to men's desires are edited, and the distorted and disjunctive body feels as if it's taken a possible yet impossible form. The body within the work is a burgeoned form of an image that exists yet wants to be kept concealed, and is a form of our desires that we wish to deny. The incomplete and unstable body moves within the space created by the artist creating a new temporality, and these bodily images drift in the screen space mixed with unrealistic elements set by the artist to have the exhibition function as a 'space of the impossible' and a location not found. ● The artist feels a desire for life and despair when the desire falls through (or unfulfilled). However, the artist finds solace in life working through the sense of unfulfillment captured herein. Just like Bataille considers "loving the night (death and ecstasy)" as a driving force of life (paradoxically) and struggles to survive, we hope our audience wanders between the screen and the gallery to discover a new location, and deeply contemplate on "the strength needed to love the night." ■ LEE Eunjin
