그림과 말 2020 Art and Words 2020

학고재는 2020년 7월 1일(수)부터 7월 31일(금)까지 학고재 전관에서 『그림과 말 2020』展을 연다. '현실과 발언' 동인 16명이 참여하는 이번 전시는 이들이 1982년 덕수미술관에서 개최한 『행복의 모습』展을 기록하면서 발간한 회지 『그림과 말』의 제목과 태도를 참조했다.

'미술에 대한 폭넓은 이해를 돕고, 의견을 교환할 수 있는 밑거름'이 되기를 희망하며 회지를 발간한 이들은 80년대 당시 청년 예술가로서 목격하고 진단한 개인적, 공동체적 삶에 있어서 '행복'의 의미를 찾는 노트를 비롯하여, 동인 각자가 가지고 있던 당대 현실에 대한 문제의식을 담은 11편의 에세이, '현실과 발언' 활동 관련 자료를 『그림과 말』에 수록했다.

'화가는 현실을 외면해도 되는가'라는 질문을 붙잡고 예술의 '구태'를 반성했던 동인들은, 자유로운 발언을 통제당한 그림이, 그 본령인 소통의 기능을 온전히 회복하여 삶의 맥락 안에서 생동할 수 있는 세상을 꿈꾸었다. '화폭 자체의 힘에 매몰되는 그림'이 아니라 '현실의 공기를 견딜 수 있는 그림'을 지향하며 '미술의 참되고 적극적인 기능'을 회복하기 위해, 이들은 기탄없는 토론을 피하지 않고 연대했다. 새로운 시대와 호흡하는 예술의 창조적 비전을 모색하던 이들의 예술에 대한 성찰과 현실을 향한 실천의 단면이 82년의 회지 『그림과 말』에 녹아 있다.

개인이 각자 운영하는 매체를 통해 시시때때로 발언하는 일이 일상화된 오늘날, '그림'과 '말'은 과거와 다른 위상과 존재방식으로 세상과 관계 맺고 있다. 동인들은 그동안 각자 창작활동의 맥락 안에서 예술의 방법론을 정제하고 예술관을 구축해나가면서도, 삶의 현장과 괴리되지 않는 예술을 지지하는 창작의 태도를 고수해왔다. 이 창작자들이 마주하고 있는 2000년대의 현실은 어떤 모습인가. 지금 여기에서 그림은 무엇을 말할 것이며, 말은 어떤 그림으로 형상화될 것인가. 이번 전시는 현실과 발언 동인으로 활동했던 작가들이 선택한 1980년대 청년기 현실에 대한 발언을 응축한 작품들과, 2020년 현실을 향한 발언을 담은 작품들을 통해, 여전히 유효한 '그림과 말'에 대한 발언의 장을 펼친다.

프로젝트 룸 ● 현실과 발언 동인의 역동적인 발언이 전시기간 동안 펼쳐질 수 있도록 전시공간 가운데 한 곳을 '진행형 프로젝트 룸'으로 기획했다. 동인은 가능한 '복수'의 날, 현장에 출몰할 수 있다. '운 좋은' 어떤 날 프로젝트 룸은 여러 명의 동인을 맞이하여, '공동작업'이 발산하는 에너지를 만끽할 수도 있으며, 어떤 '운 없는' 날에는 단 한명의 동인도 만나지 못할 수 있다. 동인은 앞사람의 작업을 고려하여 그 내용을 이어가거나, 재해석하거나, 거부하거나, 파괴하거나, 외면하거나, 동조할 수 있다. ■ 학고재

Hakgojae Gallery is pleased to present Art and Words 2020, from July 1st (Wed) to July 31st (Fri), 2020, at Hakgojae Gallery, Space 1 and Space 2. With 16 members of Reality and Utterance participating, this exhibition refers to the title and attitude of Art and Words, the bulletin published to record their exhibition, Images of Happiness, at Deoksu Museum (Seoul) in 1982. ● The artists published Art and Words in aspiration for it to 'be of help for a wider understanding of art, and become the foundation for the exchange of opinions.' The bulletin includes artist notes in search for the meaning of 'happiness' in personal and communal life the members witnessed and examined as young artists in the 1980s, and 11 essays containing their individual critical minds regarding the reality at the time. ● The artists, who lamented the 'old customs' of art, holding onto the question, "is it adequate for artists to disregard reality?" dreamt of a world in which art, restricted of free speech, can wholly regain its true role, that is, communication, to vividly exist in the context of life. To pursue 'art that can endure the climate of reality' instead of 'art entombed by the force of the picture screen itself,' and to recover the 'genuine and enthusiastic function of art,' the artists did not avoid outspoken debates but associated with it instead. Aspects of introspection regarding art and efforts towards the reality by the artists seeking innovative visions of art in concord with the new age are immanent in the 1982 bulletin, Art and Words. ● Today, in which frequent remarks through personally run media are routinized, 'art' and 'words' are in relation with the world with a different reputation and existence from the past. While refining methodologies of art and establishing artistic viewpoints in the context of their individual artistic practices so far, the artists have been holding on to the attitude of creation that supports art closely connected to the scene of life. What does the reality of the 2000s these creators are facing look like? What will art say here and now, and what kind of art will words materialize into? This exhibition is the site for utterance about 'art and words,' still valid as ever, through works encompassing their utterances about the youth's reality in the 1980s and utterances towards the reality of 2020, selected by the artists who operated as members of Reality and Utterance.

Project Room ● 'Progressive On-site Project Room' is a place within the exhibition space for the dynamic utterance of the Reality and Utterance members to be manifested during the exhibition. The members may make an appearance on 'multiple' days, if possible. On 'fortunate' days, when several members coincidentally show up together, the audience will be able to enjoy the energy the artists radiate when 'working together.' On 'less fortunate' days, when none of the members decide to show up, the room will be empty. Participating members of Reality and Utterance may take account of and continue, reinterpret, reject, destroy, avoid, or accord with the predecessor's works. ■ Hakgojae Gallery
