크로싱 CROSSING

『크로싱』은 인천아트플랫폼의 국외 입주작가 토모코 키쿠치의 개인전으로, 2020년 월부터 5월까지 입주하며 작업한 결과물을 소개하는 전시이다. 2017년부터 작가는 일본과 한국 그리고 중국에서 영상, 사진 프로젝트 「대화(Dialogue)」를 진행해왔다. 이 프로젝트의 목표는 동아시아의 근대사와 서로 다른 세 나라의 주요 쟁점에 관한 사람들의 대화를 이끌어내는 것이다. 이번 전시는 「대화」 연작의 일환으로 현재 진행 중인 작업의 과정을 실험적으로 보여주고자 한다. ● 전시명과 동일한 짧은 영상 작품 「크로싱」은 인천, 서울 및 경기도에 재정착한 탈북민들이 남한에 도착하기 전까지 겪었던 위험한 여정과 여러 국경을 넘었던 경험을 다룬다.

작가는 '경계 넘기(Crossing)'와 인간의 마음 깊숙이 자리한 '경계(border)'의 의미를 탐구하기 위해 그들의 영혼과 기억 그리고 고통의 자취를 탐구한다. 향후 이 프로젝트는 북한을 떠나온 사람들의 잘 알려지지 않은 과거사와 현재의 상황, 그리고 이들을 둘러싸고 있는 변화된 이슈를 다룰 것이다. 또한 남한에 거주하는 탈북민의 정신적, 정서적, 사회적 문제에 대해 고민하며, 그들이 현재 처한 상황과 다가올 미래에 새로운 지평을 열기 위한 방향으로 완성될 예정이다. ● 토모코 키쿠치는 일본에서 태어나 20년 넘게 베이징에서 활동하고 있는 시각예술 작가로, 사진, 비디오. 영상 설치 작업을 통해 젠더, 사회 변화, 전쟁 등과 같은 주제를 탐구해오고 있다. 역동적으로 변화하는 사회의 틈에 살고 있는 사람들에게 주목하며, 모든 프로젝트마다 특정 공동체와 오랜 기간 지속적인 만남을 이어오고 있다. 작가는 작업을 통해 갈등이 유발하는 충돌의 에너지와 세상의 모순과 복잡성을 극복하려는 인간의 힘을 시각화하고자 한다. ■ 인천아트플랫폼

CROSSING is Tomoko KIKUCHI's Solo exhibition for the IAP Artist-in-Residence 2020. The exhibition presents the outcome of her residency period of IAP (March to May, 2020), and is part of her series "Dialogue" in which she has been working on since 2017. This video and photographic project which takes place in Japan, South Korea and China aims at evoking conversations between people on the subject of the historical and current issues in theses three different countries. The exhibition CROSSING presents the portion of the experimental process of the project. ● Crossing is an short film about the resettlement of North Korean people in Incheon, Seoul and Gyeonggi-do, and their experience of a perilous journey and the crossing of several borders, before arriving in South Korea. The artist explores the trace of their souls, memories and pain in order to examine the meaning of 'crossing' and the 'border' which lies deep within human mind. ● In the future, this project will be completed and will include the unknown past histories of these individuals who used to live in the North Korea, their current situation and changing issues surround them. Topics will include the exchanging of views between North Koreans in South Korea to address their spiritual, emotional and social problems, and to open a new horizon for the present and future. ● Tomoko KIKUCHI is visual artist based in Beijing over two decades. Her photography, video and video installation works examine the themes such as gender, social changes and war, focuses on the people who live in cracks of a dynamically transforming society. In every project the artist has been involved with their community for a long period of time. Her works visualize the energy that crashes out of conflicts, and the human power to overcome the contradiction and complexity of the world. ■ Incheon Art Platform
