『더 넥스트 월드 / 1분 격리』는 2020년 인천아트플랫폼의 국외 입주작가 롤란드 파르카스의 개인전으로, 입주 기간에 작업한 결과를 선보이는 전시이다. 이번 전시는 최근 전 세계에서 벌어지고 있는 사건과 코로나19의 범세계적 유행이 종식된 이후에 일어날 수 있는 결과를 반영한다. 작가는 이 프로젝트를 통해 상호 긴밀히 연결된 지금의 세계(바이러스 등과 같은 위기요소들이 전 지구적으로 확산될 수 밖에 없는 상황)에서 우리의 경제뿐만 아니라 우리의 세계, 우리의 민주주의와 자유, 연대의식 등을 어떻게 만들어 나가야 하는지에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 전시 제목에서 유추해 볼 수 있듯이 이번 전시는 두 부분으로 구성되어 있다. 먼저, '더 넥스트 월드'는 이번 전시를 위해 만들어진 일종의 (재)개방 상설 '패션숍'으로, 쇼윈도와 같은 이 공간은 여기서 시장 경제를 상징한다. 더불어 전시장 안쪽 야외 공간은 골프장을 갖춘 거실로 탈바꿈되어 '1분 격리'라는 작업으로 꾸며진다. 이 작업은 전시장에 설치된 영상과 함께 현 팬데믹 상황을 드러낸다. 영상에는 스스로 격리된 허구의 회사원이 등장한다. 작가는 그의 외로운 일상을 텅 빈 공항, 항구에 발이 묶인 선박, 황량한 시장 등 경제가 마비된 실제 상황과 교차시키며, 관람객에게 역설적이고 '철학적인' 사색의 기회를 제공한다. 이를 통해 작가는 위기의 상황에서는 보이지 않는 곳에서 언제나 고생하고 있을, 대다수의 저학력 노동자들이 재평가되는 반면, 스스로 격리가 가능함은 결국 상류사회가 누리는 특권일 뿐이라는 것을 교묘히 드러낸다.

이번 전시는 포스트-팬데믹 세계에서 일어날 수 있는 긍정적, 부정적인 시나리오를 모두 제시하여 무뎌진 시민의식에 대해문제를 제기하고, 우리의 삶을 되찾을 수 있는 능력과 우리가 살고 싶은 (팬데믹 이후) 다음 세계(Next World)를 선택하는 것에 대한 질문을 던지고 있다. ● 롤란드 파르카스(1975년생, 슬로바키아)는 헝가리의 부다페스트를 기반으로 활동하는 인터미디어 아티스트이다. 작가는 현대사회에서의 화폐 제도, 사회적 불평등 및 인간의 삶의 가치에 중점을 두고 작업해오고 있다. ■ 인천아트플랫폼

The Next World / One Minute Quarantine is the solo exhibition of IAP Artist-in-Residence 2020, Roland FARKAS. This exhibition reflects on the current worldwide events and the possible outcomes in a postpandemic world. In his project the artist examines the effects of the crisis; how it will shape our world, our freedom, our democracy, our solidarity, the pollution of our environment as well as our economy in an interconnected world where crises became unavoidably global. ● As the title suggests, the exhibition consists of two parts. At first, the 'fashion shop' – in a permanent state of (re)opening – created for the show and titled 'The Next World', here symbolizes the market economy. Furthermore, the artist has transformed the open-air space of the gallery into a living room equipped with a golf course titled 'One Minute Quarantine' and it includes a video that shows the everyday life of a lone fictional businessman in self-isolation. Visitors can follow his ironic 'philosophical' contemplation with altering scenes showing the actual state of paralysis in the economy (e.g. airports with no flights, ships stranded in ports, deserted markets, etc.). The artist implies that self-quarantine is the privilege of the upper class while the mostly undereducated workers, whose toil has hitherto been invisible are re-evaluated in times of crisis. ● This exhibition offers both a positive and a negative scenario of the post-pandemic world and raises the issue of citizen awareness, the ability to get back the power over our lives and to choose the next world we want to live in. ● Roland FARKAS (b. 1975, Slovakia) is an intermedia artist based in Budapest, Hungary.
