소소한 아름다움을 찾아서

새로운 곳에 갔을 때 마주치는 세상을 관찰하고 표현하는 것은 뜻 깊은 일입니다. 섬세한 관찰을 통해 그 장소와 그때 느꼈던 느낌을 기억합니다. 사람이 없는 한적하고 고요한 카페도, 사람으로 북적이는 버스 정류장도 그만의 매력이 있습니다. 꽃은 다채다양한 냄새와 색, 그리고 아름다움을 품고 있습니다. 그리고 모든 살아있는 것들은 자랍니다. 모든 생물체는 제 각각 수명이 다르기도 하죠. 살아있는 꽃의 신선한 향기는 담을 수 없겠지만 꽃의 우아함과 화사한 색채를 그림으로 남기려 했습니다. 소박한 마을의 어느 기와집과 만개한 벚꽃 나무에서 떨어지는 꽃잎, 이 모두가 조화를 이루어 한 추억의 장면을 만들고 한순간의 아름다움을 그림에 살며시 담았습니다. 관객이 그림을 보실 때에 제가 느꼈던 봄날의 따뜻함, 때로는 한적한 거리의 고요함과 고독, 어여쁜 꽃의 섬세함을 함께 경험하고 감상하셨으면 좋겠습니다.

여행과 그림 그리기를 좋아하는 어느 화가입니다. 2020년에 새로운 도전을 하고 싶었습니다: "1년안에 50점의 그림을 그리고 세 곳의 전시회에 지원해보자!" 이곳저곳 지원했으나 연락이 없는 곳, 공모에서 떨어진 곳, 그리고 공모 첫 라운드에 합격했지만 코로나로 인해 문을 닫은 영국의 어느 갤러리 등등 여러가지 막막한 상황이 발생했습니다. 그래도 "될 때까지 하자" 하는 마음으로 그림을 다시 그리고 또 여기저기 지원했습니다. 그리고 감사하게도 롯데백화점 일산점 아트 스튜디오에서 첫 개인전의 기회를 얻게 되었습니다. 계속 두드리다 보면 언젠가는 문이 열리고 길이 생기지 않을까요? 앞으로도 열심히 새로운 그림을 만드는 것을 기대하고 있습니다. ■ 김규원

It's a meaningful experience, observing and expressing the surroundings in a painting when one visits a new place. I recall what I felt when I was there at the place. This is partly due to such a thorough observation. A silent café void of people, bus stop bustling with people....each of these places is attractive and unique in its own way. Flowers emit diverse fragrance, colors, and beauty. In addition, all living things grow. They all have different life spans. Even though I can not adequately capture the essence or the fresh fragrance of a flower, I tried my best to leave its elegance and colors in painting. A traditional Korean housing in a humble village and falling cherry blossom petals, these together form a harmony and create a memorable scene. I gently captured the spring scene's beauty in the painting. When the audience sees the paintings, I hope the audience feels and experiences the warmth of a spring day, or sometimes stillness and aloofness of an empty street, or the intricacy of a beautiful flower. ● Kyuwon Kim is an artist who enjoys travelling and creating art. She wanted to try a new challenge this year in 2020: "Paint 50 paintings in a year and apply to three exhibitions." She applied to many galleries and exhibitions but encountered some unfavorable situations along the way. Some galleries gave no reply, others declined her application, and one British gallery closed its doors due to coronavirus pandemic. Anyway, thinking "Let's do it until something happens," she continued to paint and apply. Then thankfully an opportunity opened up at Ilsan—Lotte Department Store's Art Studio—in having the first solo exhibition. If you keep on knocking, wouldn't doors open and paths make way?
