Cycle, the growth

이번 전시는 단편적인 일상의 장면에서 우리의 무수한 일상이 녹아있는 공간 전체로의 확장을 꾀하고 있다. 그 동안 본인의 관심을 끌었던 여러 반복이미지들은 우리가 살고 있는 공간의 한 부분에서 찾아낸 것이었다. 사람의 감정이 시시각각 변하고 또 변하듯 우리가 만들어내는 공간 또한 우리의 모습이라 생각하고 일정한 주기를 거치며 성장과 쇠락을 겪을 것이다.

본인은 빠른 성장을 느낄 수 있는 신도시에 거주하고 있으며 삶의 공간이 성장하기 위해 끊임없이 변화되는 것을 바라보고 있다. 그 성장 곡선인 'Cycle'의 한 부분을 체험하며 표현한 이미지들은 내가 속한 세계에 대한 상징이자 그리던 당시 시점의 감정도 반영되어 있다. 파헤쳐진 땅을 바라보며 무엇이 지어질지 궁금하기도 하고 무심히 지나치기도 한다. 일상이 되어버린 공사장의 모습과 누군가의 욕망에 의해 자라나는 건물들을 바라보면 인간의 욕망이 어디까지 올라가나 내심 씁쓸하기도 하고 그것을 즐기기도 한다. 한창 개발사업 중인 도시의 모습에서 인간의 욕망이나 살아있는 역동적인 도시의 에너지, 성장하기 위해 변화를 준비하는 땅의 움직임 등 다각적인 관점으로 접근하였다. 분양 사무실 앞의 구름 떼처럼 모여 있는 군중의 긴 줄, 그 사람들에게서 뿜어져 나오는 무엇을 향한 에너지 이 또한 내가 보는 풍경의 한 부분이다. 그들이 줄 서서 구경하는 모델하우스는 마치 먹음직스럽게 잘 차려진 인간의 밥상 같기도 하다. 오늘도 인간이 파놓은 땅과 흙무더기를 응시하며 더불어 인간이 지어낼 무언가가 채워질 공간을 바라보며 그 안에서 살아있음을 느끼고 여느 때처럼 내가 속한 세계를 그리고 있다.

본인의 관심이 미시적인 반복이미지에서 거시적인 공간으로 전개된 만큼, 확장된 모습을 담기 위해 3m 정도의 작품 사이즈로 시도하였다. 즉흥적인 붓 터치와 재료의 우연한 물성의 효과를 통해 살아있는 이미지에 집중하고자 하였다. 이와 더불어 이번 작업에 동원된 주된 재료는 목탄이다. 재료의 성질상 부드럽고 다양한 질감을 표현하기에 적합하고 때로는 유연하고 거친 모습을 표현하는데 적절하였다. 또한, 쉽게 그렸다 지웠다를 반복하다가 뭉개기도 하면서 드로잉 순간의 이미지가 쌓이는 흔적을 고스란히 느낄 수 있기에, 복합적이고 역동적인 이미지를 표현하는데 유리했다.

이번 전시를 통해 기존의 반복이미지를 통합하는 본질적인 주제인 삶의 공간으로 확장되었고, 그러한 공간에서 표출되는 것이 인간과 닮아 있다는 점에 집중하고자 하였다. 앞으로도 더욱 자유로운 공간의 모습을 담고자 할 것이며 즉흥성을 강조하는 실험적인 기법을 시도할 것이다. ■ 김승현

In this exhibition, I'm making an attempt to expand my views from fragments of daily life into the entire space embracing our innumerable daily lives. Those repetitive images drawing my attention so far came from a part of the space where we live. As our emotions change every moment, the space we create is our reflection and will experience growth and decline. ● I live in a new town showing a rapid growth and I watch space of life continuously changing to develop. The images, which I created while experiencing a part of a growth curve (Cycle), are symbols of the world we belong to and reflections of my emotions at the time of drawing. When I look at the dug ground, I'm curious of what will be built or sometimes I just pass by. While I watch those daily construction sites and look at those growing buildings ordered by someone's greed, I feel bitter thinking where human desire is eventually growing up to or I just enjoy watching them. From the image of city in the height of development, I have tried in many ways to present man's desire, dynamic energies of city and planet's move preparing for a change to grow. A tightly packed cloud of property buyers waiting in a long line at a real estate agency and their releasing energies of frantically chasing after something are also part of what I see. Those model houses they're viewing in line seem to be our food laid out on the table in an appetizing array. Today, while I also stare at grounds and piles of earth dug by us and I look at some space to be filled with something made up by us, I'm feeling alive among them and I'm drawing the world I belong to, as usual. ● As my attention develops from micro repetitive images into macro space, I have tried to paint works with the size of 3 meters in order to hold expanded views. I have focused on live images by spontaneous brushing and by using accidental nature of materials. On top of this, the main material for this exhibition is charcoal. Considering the nature of charcoal, since it is appropriate to express soft and various textures, it is useful to paint sometimes flexible or sometimes tough images. Also, since charcoal is very easy to draw and erase and sometimes squash which enables to feel the total remains of every images of each drawing, it has an advantage of painting complex and dynamic images. ● At this exhibition, my work stretches out to the space of life, which is an essential theme embracing the previous repetitive images and I try to focus on the links between the expressions of such a space and human nature. In the future, I will capture images of more liberal space and try experimental art techniques to highlight my improvisation. ■ Kim seung hyun
