당신 속의 마법

대구미술관에서는 2013년부터 역량 있는 젊은 작가(Y)와 중견작가(Y+)를 지원하는 'Y,Y+아티스트 프로젝트'를 진행해왔다. 선정된 작가들은 동시대미술의 중요한 젊은, 중견 작가들로 각자의 자리에서 여전히 중요한 질문을 던지며 작업을 이어나가고 있다. 그리고 지금 열리는 이 전시는 그 동안 선정된 작가들을 재조명하고 그들의 이야기에 동참하기 위해서 기획되었다. 예술의 정의는 '메타포'(은유)에 있으며 작가들의 조형언어는 직접적이기보다는 은유적이고, 예술의 본질은 은유를 통한 의미의 변용에 있다. 이는 동시대 미술에서 여러 층위로 확대되었으며, 매체의 확장과도 연관되어 있다. 따라서 평면, 영상, 설치 등 다양한 방식으로 구성되어 예술작품의 범주와 의미를 찾는 것이 더욱 어렵게 느껴진다. 그러나 작가들이 어떤 '표현방식'으로 내용을 전달하고 있는가에 집중해본다면 조금은 쉬워질 지도 모른다. 예술작품의 표현적 속성은 은유적 의미이다. 중요한 것은 예술은 충분이 '말'하여 질 수 없으며, 그저 '느낄' 수 있을 뿐이다. 즉 작가의 표현성과 개성을 느낄 뿐이다. 전시제목 『당신 속의 마법』은 1599년경에 쓰여진 셰익스피어의 『헨리 5세』의 마지막 대사이다. 프랑스를 정복하고 왕권을 지켜주는 대가로 공주 캐서린에게 결혼을 요구하는 달콤한 사랑고백의 대사이지만 단순한 사랑고백을 넘어 난국의 정치적 상황을 종식시키고 새로운 시작을 알리는 의미심장한 메타포이다. 12명의 작가들이 던지는 메세지도 이와 유사하다. 하나로 정의되어지지 않는, 그러나 흥미로워 마법에 걸린 것 같다. 마치 암호를 해독하듯 미로처럼 구성된 전시장을 거닐다 보면 작가들의 마법에 빠질 것이다. 무엇을 은유 하는가. 어떻게 은유하는가. 12명 작가들의 활약상은 30-40대 작가가 직면하고 있는 현실과 더 나아가 우리 사회가 마주한 현실의 여러 풍경을 깊이 있게 보여줄 것이다. 대구미술관이 호명하는 12명의 작가들을 오랫동안 주목해주길 바란다. ■ 대구미술관

Since 2013, Daegu Art Museum has been carrying out a project supporting competent young artists (Y) and experienced artists (Y+). The selected artists consist of important young artists and experienced artists representing contemporary arts, and each one continues with his or her work while steadily asking significant questions from the place where they belong to. The present exhibition was designed to shed new light on these selected artists and encourage our participation in their stories. Art can be defined as "a metaphor" and the figurative language of artists is implicative is rather metaphorical than direct and the essence of art consists in transformation of meaning through metaphors. This expanded towards a variety of levels in the contemporary arts and is closely related to expansion of media as well. Therefore, it seems more difficult to find the category and meaning of art works for today's arts are composed of diverse methods covering 2D works, video works and installation works. However, we might find it easier if we could focus on which "expression method" artists try to deliver the message. The expressive attributes of art works lie in the metaphorical significance. What matters is that art can never be "told" enough and we are supposed to just "feel" it. In other words, all we can do is to feel expressiveness and individuality of each artist. The exhibition title "You have witchcraft in your lips" is the last line from "Henry V" of Shakespeare written near 1599. This is a line of Henry V's sweet love confession asking Princess Catherine to marry him in return for conquest of France and protection of royal authority. However, beyond the mere love confession, this is a significant metaphor ending many political conflicts and heralding a new start. The messages delivered by 12 artists are quite similar to this. The messages resist to be defined as only one but they all seem to be under a spell for being simply intriguing. ■ Daegu Art Museum
