Still Beautiful

꽃은 인류 역사에서 오래동안 심미적 대상으로 다루어진 대표적인 소비재 중 하나이다. 현대 사회에서 꽃은 과거보다 더 대량으로 생산되어 소비되고 있다. 꽃은 개화되기 직전에 모체로부터 잘려 나와 꽃시장에서 거래된다. 꽃시장에서 팔려나간 꽃은 곧 만개하여 구입한 사람들의 목적을 충족시켜 준다. 활짝 피어 있는 짧은 시간을 지나 마침내 꽃이 시들고 나면, 꽃은 쓰레기통에 버려진다. ● 그런데 버려지는 꽃은 여전히 아름다움을 간직하고 있다. 이 때의 아름다움은 수분의 증발이 만들어 내는 짙은 주름과 색채가 만들어 내는 것이다. 그리고 시들고 말라비틀어지면서 변모하는 꽃의 형상은 꽃이 만개했을 때의 아름다움과는 또 다른 기이한 아름다움을 보여준다. 버려지는 순간까지 꽃은 짧고도 긴 인생의 은유를 던진다. ● 버려지는 순간까지 아름다움을 유지하고 있는 소비재가 꽃만 있는 것은 아니다. 깨끗하게 사용되고 버려지는 제품들이나, 종이를 비롯한 다양한 소재의 일회용 포장재들, 그리고 유리나 플라스틱 등의 소재로 만들어져 본연의 형상이 파괴되기 어려운 제품들이 그러하다. 이들은 대부분 버려지는 순간까지 처음에 기획된 기능적인 아름다움을 그대로 간직하고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 기능적인 목적을 달성했기 때문에 수많은 일회용 소비재들이 버려진다. ● 「Still Beautiful」은 이렇게 버려지는 시든 꽃과 버려지는 공산품들을 함께 연출한 사진 연작이다. 꽃과 함께 배치된 공산품들은 현대 사회의 풍족한 재화를 대표하는 새로운 바니타스 알레고리이기도 하다. 꽃과 공산품을 조형적으로 구성한 연출 사진을 통해 현대 사회가 지닌 소비 양상의 문제점을 은유적으로 드러내 보고자 했다. ■ 정현목

Flowers are one of the representative consumer goods which have been treated as an aesthetic subject throughout the history of mankind. In modern society, flowers are produced and consumed in greater quantities than in the past. Flowers are cut from their parents right before blooming to be sold in flower markets, which soon become in full bloom, thus satisfying the purposes of their new owners. After the flowers finally wither after a short period of time while in full bloom, they are discarded. ● However, the discarded flowers still keep their beauty. This beauty is made by thick wrinkles and colors caused by evaporated moisture. In addition, the shape of the flowers transforming while they wither and dry out shows a peculiar beauty different from that of flowers in full bloom. Until the very moment when the flowers are abandoned, they present a metaphor of their short but long lives. ● Flowers are not the only consumer goods that keep their beauty until the moment that they are abandoned. There are discarded products that are cleanly used and abandoned, various disposable packing materials including paper, and other products made from glass or plastic whose shape is hardly destroyed. Most of them keep their initially planned original functional beauty until the moment they are actually abandoned. However, since their functional purposes are achieved, a great deal of disposable consumer goods are discarded. ● 'Still Beautiful' is a series of photographs directing withering flowers along with discarded industrial products. These industrial products are a new Vanitas allegory representing the abundant goods in modern society. The artwork aims to metaphorically reveal those issues of consumption in modern society through directed photographs with formative composition of flowers and industrial products. ■ Jung, Hyun-mok
