99%

한국의 '제주도'는 환상의 섬이라 불린다. 그곳은 이국적인 자연적·문화적 배경을 바탕으로 유명한 여행지가 되었다. 하지만 최근 제주에는 많은 변화가 생겼다. 매년 관광객과 이주민이 증가했고, 늘어나는 인구만큼 여러 유형의 환경문제 또한 대두되었다. ● 「99%」는 최근 제주도내에 위치한 쓰레기 매립장의 매립률이 전체의 99%에 도달했다는 사실을 기초로 한다. 이것은 포화의 직전으로 늘어나는 인구, 향유되는 편리함에 비례한 결과이다. 여기서 나는 99%가 갖는 이중적 의미에 대해 고찰한다. 그리고 숨겨진 1%의 영역 또한 이중적 의미로 해석한다. ● 9%는 거의 완벽에 가까운 수치다. 100%가 완벽함을 갖는 극점이라면 99%는 그에 준하는 것으로 인식되며 우리에게 환상과 환희를 꿈꾸게 한다. 제주의 달라진 이미지도 이러한 99%에 기인한다. 과거에는 여유로운 삶(자연과 문화 향유의 측면에서)이 막연한 환상으로서 불확실하거나 실현 불가능한 것처럼 여겨졌다. 하지만 지금은 다르다. 쉽고 빠르게, 편하게 도달할 수 있는 환상이 되었다. 자연 향유와 문명의 혜택이라는 상반된 것의 조화된 삶은 이제 실현 가능한 것이 되었다. 환상 실현의 바로미터, 이것이 우리가 99%에 열광하는 이유다. ● 하지만 99%는 숨겨둔 1%를 갖는다. 그 1%는 채워지지 않은 것으로, 100%가 되기에는 아직 모자란 결핍으로 다가온다. 결핍은 우리가 꿈꾸던 환상의 이면에 존재하며 욕망을 탐하는 이기심이 되어 분출된다. 그리고 결핍에 대한 탐욕은 환상의 영역을 잠식해 나간다. 우리가 꿈꾸던 조화로운 삶을 쟁취와 소유의 형태로 변화시킨다. 남은 1%를 향한 욕망은 브레이크가 없는 자동차처럼 99%의 환상을 99%의 탐욕으로 바꾸어 놓는다. ● 반면 탐욕의 99%에도 1%는 존재한다. 탐욕의 사회에서 남겨둔 1%, 마지막까지 지켜야 하는 어떤 것, 시대가 공감하는 가치의 모습으로 존재한다. 99와 1은 이중적 의미로 작용하며 결코 도달할 수 없는 100을 향한다. ● 「99%」는 제주의 쓰레기 매립장에서 촬영된 버려진 사물과 풍경을 소재로 한다. 가득 찬 99%의 욕망에 내재된 행위의 과정들을 미적 영역으로 치환한다. 이것은 욕망 속에 숨겨진 아름다움의 가치를 찾는 과정이다. 앞에서 언급한 99%와 1%는 항상 동시에 존재한다. 단지 결과의 문제가 아닌 선택과 행위의 과정에 따라 환상이 되기도 하고, 탐욕이 되기도 한다. 쓰레기로 표상되는 욕망 안에서 환상의 가치를 찾아내는 것은 이러한 관점에서 의미를 갖는다. ● "자연과 문화가 공존하는 환상의 섬, 제주에 오신 것을 환영합니다!" - 제주행 비행기 기내방송 도착멘트 - ■ 강주현

Jeju Island in Korea is called a fantasy island. This island has become a famous tourist destination based on its exotic nature and cultural background. However, many things have recently changed on Jeju Island. Tourists and domestic immigrants have been increasing every year, and various kinds of environmental problems have also emerged in proportion to such an increasing population. ● 「99%」 is based on the fact that 99% of the capacity of the landfill sites on Jeju Island has already been used, which result is proportional to the increasing population that has already reached a saturation level, and to the conveniences enjoyed by such a population. At this point, I am not only examining this dual meaning that 99% represents, but also interpreting the hidden 1% of the area in terms of this dual meaning. ● 99% is an almost perfect figure. If 100% is a figure representing perfection, then 99% is a figure that is considered to be practically equal to 100% and makes us dream of fantasy and joy. Jeju's changed image also originated from such a 99%. In the past, a leisurely life (in terms of the enjoyment of nature and culture) was regarded as a vague fantasy which was uncertain or impossible to achieve. However, it's different now. Such a life has become a fantasy that can be achieved in an easy, fast and convenient way. A life in which opposite aspects, such as the enjoyment of nature and the benefits of civilization, are harmonized is now considered to be possible. It is a barometer for realizing our fantasy, and that's why we are so excited about the 99%. ● However, the 99% involves the hidden 1%. This 1% is what is not filled up, and represents the deficiency that prevents a 100% perfection. This deficiency exists in the dark side of our fantasy, and is vented out in the form of selfishness seeking its desires. The greed for this deficiency encroaches on the area of our fantasy, and eventually changes the harmonious and balanced life that we have been dreaming of into a form of struggle and possession. Like a traveling car without a brake, our greed for the remaining 1% changes the 99% of the fantasy into a 99% of greed. ● On the other hand, a 99% of greed also leaves 1%. The 1% left in the society of greed stands as something that has to be kept to the end, or as a value that empathizes with the times. 99 and 1 are working as a dual meaning and are headed for the 100 that can never be achieved. ● 「99%」 uses abandoned objects and the scenery photographed at a landfill site on Jeju Island as the main materials. The process of the conduct inherent in the 99% of desire is converted into an aesthetic area. This conversion is the process of finding the value of the beauty hidden in desire. The aforementioned 99% and the 1% always coexist together. They are not simply a matter of the results, but happen to be either fantasy or greed, depending on the process of choice and conduct.
