Dreaming Book

2018년 한 해를 마무리하는 겨울방학 즈음, 사단법인 한지개발원은 온 가족이 함께 넉넉히 즐길 수 있는 올해의 네 번째 기획전시를 준비했습니다. 이번 전시는 성서, 사전, 악보 등의 다양한 책을 해체하여 또 다른 예술품으로 승화시키는 이지현 작가님의 초대전시입니다. 책이 기록의 매체를 넘어 작가의 손을 거치면 어떻게 또 다른 예술작품으로 탄생하는지 잘 보여줄 수 있는 흥미로운 전시라고 생각합니다. 또한 이 전시는 원주한지테마파크라는 전시 공간이 한지하는 소재 뿐 아니라 종이 전반의 영역으로 콘텐츠를 확장하여 다양한 현대예술작품을 아우르는 큰 변화를 만드는 전시라고 생각합니다. 본원은 그간 한지를 소재로 다양한 작품활동을 하고 있는 한지공예인, 종이 장인, 종이조형예술가의 현대미술작품, 해외 종이작가의 실험적인 작품 등 다양한 형태의 작품과 전시로 시민 여러분과 만나는 자리를 마련했습니다. 2010년 원주한지테마파크 개관 이후 종이 예술을 여러분과 함께 향유하며 원주의 문화유산인 '한지'의 우수성을 널리 알리는 역할을 했고 앞으로도 기대에 부응하기 위해 시민 여러분, 관람객 여러분의 목소리를 듣도록 노력 하겠습니다. 마지막으로 좋은 작품 아낌없이 전시에 내어주신 이지현 작가님께 다시 한번 감사의 인사를 드리면서 좋은 전시를 위한 후원을 아끼지 않는 원주시에도 감사의 인사를 드립니다. ■ 김진희

이지현, Pluck off와 노동집약적 미학의 장점 ● 전통적인 회화의 재료인 붓 대신 망치로 이미지를 표현하는 이지현 작가를 초대하여 이번 기획전시를 준비했다. 이지현 작가는 책을 망치로 두드리고 뜯는 해체의 과정을 거쳐 새로운 책을 만든다. 그리고 그 새로운 책은 작가의 땀과 시간을 추정할 수 있는 현대미술 작품으로 태어난다. 책이 이지현 작가의 주 소재가 된 것은 아버지에 대한 기억과 추억 때문이다. 아버지와 책에 대한 이미지의 동일화와 그 기억의 재구성이 작가의 대표작 Dreaming book 시리즈로 표현되기 시작했다. 또한 작가와 비슷한 시기의 흔적을 간직한 책들로도 최근에는 작업을 하고 있다. 책과 본인을 동일시하면서 자연스럽고 직접적으로 그 책을 뜯고 두드리며 작가만의 해석과 이미지의 재창조를 시도하고 있다. 최근에는 옷을 해체하여 재구성하는 작품도 선보였다. 대구문화예술회관의 2018 올해의 중견작가 전시 'J에게'의 옷 작업 200벌, 패션디자이너 박동준의 해체된 옷으로 작품을 선보인 '동상이몽' 전시 등이다. 옷의 해체작업은 우리 몸에 직접적으로 닿아 몸을 보호해주었던 '옷'의 해체되고 두드림이기 때문에 그 느낌이 훨씬 더 강렬하다. 종이, 책, 옷 등 일련의 섬유조직과 고군분투하는 이지현작가의 작품은 '망치', '훼손', '뜯다'라는 폭력적인 단어와는 거리가 멀고 아름답다. 훼손되고 뜯겨진 '것'들은 다시 제자리로 돌아가거나 다른 형태를 찾아 전혀 새로운 아름다움을 우리에게 선사한다. 책이 기억하고 있는 단단한 망치질 소리와 작가의 몸짓이 Dreaming book 속에 생생하게 남아 있다. 책과 종이에 반영된 Pluck off라는 기법과 '기술'로까지 보여 지는 작가의 끈기와 예술적 집요함을 응원하며 전시를 기쁘게 준비했다. ■ 이주은

Around the time for winter break when we conclude the year 2018, Hanji (traditional Korean paper) Development Institute Inc. has prepared this year's 4th special exhibition for the whole family to enjoy together. This is an invitational exhibition of the artist Lee Ji Hyun, who sublimates bible, dictionary, musical score etc into different works of art through deconstruction. It is an interesting exhibition that demonstrates how a book can overcome as a medium of records in the artist's hands and come to life as a different form of artwork. Furthermore, we think that this exhibition will bring significant change to Wonju Hanji Theme Park's exhibition space to embrace various modern works of art by not just including contents related to hanji but also expanding contents to be inclusive of all paper related aspects. Through diverse forms of arts and exhibitions by hanji craftsmen, paper mastercrafts, modern art work of paper-formative art, experimental work of oversea paper artists, we have prepared a place for those who work with hanji to meet with fellow citizens. After the opening of Wonju Hanji Theme Park in 2010, we have worked to promote the excellence of 'hanji,' which is the cultural heritage of Wonju, while appreciating paper art with you, and going forward, we shall endeavor to listen to your voices in order to meet the expectation. Lee Ji Hyun, Pluck off and aesthetic advantage of intensive labor ● This special exhibition has been prepared by inviting the artist Lee Ji Hyun, who prefers to express the image through a hammer than through a brush - a more traditional tool of painting. The artist Lee Ji Hyun uses a hammer to beat the book, and a brand new book is created through the process of pluck off. And then this brand new book comes to life as a modern work of art that could be used to estimate the artist's blood, sweat, and tears. The reason why the book became the artist Lee Ji Hyun's primary material is because of his memory and reminiscence of his father. Convergence of the images of his father and books and recreation of the memory have been expressed through the artist's representative series of work 'Dreaming Book.' Furthermore, he has been recently working with books harboring vestige of time similar to his. Through identifying himself with the books and naturally and directly plucking those books, he is attempting to recreate his own interpretation and image. Recently, he has presented art work deconstructing and reconstituting clothes - 200 clothings art work in Daegu Culture & Arts Center's 2018 This Year's Medium-Aged Artist Exhibition 'To J' and deconstructed cloth of fashion designer Park Dong Joon in 'Dong Sang Yi Mong' (동상이몽) etc. Since deconstruction of clothes dismantles and beats the clothes that were physically in contact with us to protect our bodies, it comes across with intense impression. Despite solitarily struggles against paper, book, cloth, and series of fibrous organization, the artist Lee Ji Hyun's works are distant from violent terminologies such as 'hammer,' 'damage,' and 'pluck off' and rather beautiful. By restoring those damaged and plucked off to their original place or finding another form, they present new beauty to us. Sound of firm hammering and gesture of the artist remembered by the book are vividly lingering in Dreaming Book. I have prepared this exhibition delightedly while cheering for technique, applied on books and papers, called Pluff off as well as the seemingly skill-like artist's perseverance and aesthetic tenaciousness. ■ Lee Ju Eun
