핑크맨(PINKMAN)을 제안하며 ● 자이푸르(Jaipur)에 갈 때 마다 나는 왠지 설레고 무언가 기대를 합니다. 핑크시티로 불리는 이 도시가 고풍스럽고 아름다운 이미지로 각인되어 있는데다가 잊지 못할 추억이 있어서입니다. ● 자이푸르와 나의 첫 인연은 2011년에 인도와 한국의 작가들이 함께한 『핑크시티 아트 프로젝트』였습니다. 자이푸르가 핑크시티로 불린다는 사실에 호기심을 느껴 시작한 전시 프로젝트였습니다. 핑크시티를 유토피아, 달콤함(사랑), 미래의 도시로 해석한 다음 이를 기초로 컨셉트를 잡고 한국과 인도작가가 함께 아티스트 캠프와 전시를 열었습니다.

그로부터 7년이 지나 다시 핑크시티를 떠 올립니다. 일회성 전시로 끝낸 아쉬움이 여태껏 남아 있었는데 그 이유가 『핑크시티』가 여전히 자이푸르(Jaipur)의 소중한 무형 유산이라 믿기 때문입니다. 핑크시티는 19세기 후반, 영국 식민지 시대에 영국 왕족의 방문을 환영하는 표시로서 도시 전체를 핑크색으로 치장 한데서 유래되었다고 합니다. 그 이후 지금까지 핑크시티라는 별칭을 유지해 온 것은 매우 특이한 사례이자, 그 자체가 흥미로운 스토리입니다. 핑크는 원래 역사적으로 남성을 상징하는 색이었습니다. 그러나 지금은 그 의미가 반전되어 여성의 색으로 간주됩니다. 남자에 비해서 여성들이 선호하는 색이라는 것입니다. 한국의 풍습에서도 핑크색의 복숭아 꽃을 아름다운 여인에 비유했습니다. 또한 우리의 언어습관 중에 달콤한 사랑은 핑크 빛 사랑으로, 희망적인 미래는 핑크 빛 미래라고 말합니다. 이처럼 긍정적이고 아름다움을 떠 올리게 하는 색이 핑크입니다. 한마디로 단순한 색채 이상의 것을 지칭하고 있어서 상상의 날개를 펴기에 안성맞춤인 색입니다. 나는 이러한 맥락에서 핑크와 핑크시티를 새롭게 볼 것을 제안합니다. 바로 PINKMAN입니다. PINK MAN이라고 중간에 띄어 쓰면 남성을 나타내지만 두 단어를 결합해서 PINKMAN으로 쓰면 역설적이게도 여성성이 두드러져 나타납니다. 사전에 나오지 않지만 나는 PINKMAN을 핑크스러운 인간으로 총칭하려고 합니다. 다면 지금의 시점에서 나는 행동하는 여성, 아름다운 여성, 미래를 지향하는 여성의 복합체가 핑크맨으로 부를 작정입니다. 한국과 인도 여성작가 함께하는 교류전시의 타이틀을 핑크맨으로 제안하는 이유가 바로 여기에 있습니다.

이번에 자이푸르를 찾는 한국 작가들은 한국에서 전통미술을 기본으로 학습하고 이를 토대로 현대미술을 지향하고 있습니다. 전통 문화의 도시 자이푸르는 이들에게 멋진 추억을 제공해 줄 것으로 믿습니다. 더불어 핑크맨의 활동에 기대를 하겠습니다. ● 끝으로 이 전시가 한국 인도 두 나라 미술 교류 본보기와 동시에 일회성 교류가 아닌 지속적으로 이어지길 바라겠습니다. 감사합니다. ■ 송인상

Suggesting the PINKMAN ● Whenever I visit Jaipur, I feel excited and expect something. It is because this city, called the Pink City, is remembered as antique and beautiful images, and with unforgettable memories. ● The first connection between Jaipur and me was held in 2011 collaborating with Korean and Indian Authors. It was the exhibition project I felt curious about the fact that Jaipur is called as the Pink City. I interpreted the Pink City as utopia, sweetness (love), and the future city, set it as a base concept, and held artist camp and exhibition with Korean as well as Indian authors. ● After 7 years from that event, I recall the Pink City again. Since I believe the Pink City is still a valuable intangible heritage of Jaipur, l have been feeling uncomfortable about this one-time event exhibition. The name Pink City is originated from the occasion when the entire city was painted in pink color to welcome royal family of England. It is a very special case to maintain its nickname, the Pink City, as well as an interesting story itself. Historically, pink was a color representing male sex. However, now the meaning is reversed, the color of pink represents female sex. In other words, pink color is preferred by women. Traditionally, Korean used to compare pink peach flowers to beautiful women. Also, we call sweet love as pink love and positive future as pink future, customarily. In this regard, pink is a color of affirmation and beauty. In a word, pink is the one representing more than a simple color itself, therefore the right color giving full scope to people's imagination. In this context, I suggest to put new perspectives on the color pink and the Pink City. It is the PINKMAN. In two words, PINK MAN, these represent a male, however in one word, PINKMAN paradoxically emphasizes the femininity. Although this might not be defined by dictionaries, I would like to utilize it as a generic term to define pink-ish human beings. From now on, I would like to call a complex concept of active, beautiful and future-oriented woman, a PINKMAN. This is the reason why I suggest the title of Korea-india Exchange Exhibition as the PINKMAN. ● Korean Authors visiting Jaipur this time have been basically studied Korean traditional art, and sought for modern art based on these studies. I believe the city of traditional culture, Jaipur will provide wonderful memories to them during the stay. Along with this, I look forward to exuberant activities by PINKMAN. ● Last but not least, I hope this exhibition can be an ideal example of art exchanges between Korea and India, as well as be continued in future rather than one-time event.
