존재의 생성과 소멸 ● '마른 식물' 연작은 윤석원 작가의 '존재'와 그를 둘러싼 '세계'에 대한 따뜻한 시선을 담고 있다. 작가는 수분이 증발하고 말라가는 식물의 외형에서 유한한 생명체의 숙명을 발견하게 된다. 가장 일상적인 사물들 중의 하나이자 사소할 수 있는 꽃과 나무 위에 드리워진 시간성 속에서 삶의 원리를 깨닫고, 그들의 지워진 과거를 읽어낸다. 하나의 생명체는 탄생과 동시에 소멸을 예고한다. 그리고 그 하나의 주기를 지닌 생명체는 다양한 힘의 층위들에 놓이게 된다. 이러한 존재에게 더해진 힘의 개입은 중력, 기압, 기후 등의 자연 현상에서부터 인간의 욕망으로 비롯된 전쟁, 재난에 이르기까지 다양하다. 작가는 존재를 둘러싸고 있는 자연적, 사회적 환경에서 비롯된 삶의 여러 모습들을 관찰하고, 이로부터 삶에 내재된 의미들을 통찰해낸다. 무엇보다도 이 관찰과 통찰의 과정은 '존재'에 대한 위로와 연민의 태도에서 출발한다.

윤석원의 작업에서 만나게 되는 마른 식물들은 우리가 주변하게 쉽게 마주할 수 있는 것들이다. 그것들은 어느 화창한 여름날에 볼 수 있던 것처럼 햇빛을 향해 위로, 밖으로 뻗지 않고 아래로, 안으로 숨어든다. 이들에게서 화려한 색의 향연도 맛볼 수 없다. 그러나 작가는 마른 식물의 모습을 통해 소멸과 사라짐만을 은유하고 있지 않다. 어디로부터 들어오는지 알 수 없는 빛의 반사와 보이지 않는 바람의 작은 움직임을 통해 섬세한 색과 형태의 변화를 보여주며 하나의 생명체 안과 밖에 혼재된 스러짐과 생명력을 동시에 그려낸다. 그럼으로써 작가는 서로 다른 에너지, 과거와 현재 그리고 미래가 공생하는 생명체와 삶의 모습에 구체적으로 근접해간다. 어찌 보면, 존재가 생성되는 순간 이미 소멸을 동반하는 것처럼, 존재의 소멸은 또 다른 존재의 생성을 이끈다. 작가는 겨울을 목전에 둔 메마른 식물의 모습에서, 하나의 존재가 다른 존재에 대해 갖게 되는 애정과 희생이 이러한 영속적인 생명력의 원천임을 깨달은 듯 보인다.

이렇게 그가 그려내고자 하는 주제와 메세지들은 회화라는 매체로 인해 더욱 빛을 발한다. 동시대에서 가장 원초적이고 단순할 수 있는 매체와 그것을 다루는 손의 기술과 노동력은 존재의 근원에 더욱 다가가는 효과를 낳는다. 세계와 가장 일차적으로 만나게 되는 신체의 몸짓을 통해 '존재'는 비로소 우리 눈앞에 펼쳐진다. 거대한 캔버스, 그 화면을 가득 메운 식물들의 단순하면서도 복잡한 외연, 빛, 미묘한 유채색의 변화는 생성과 소멸을 동시에 갖고 있는 '존재'를 표현하기에 더 없이 적합함을 작가는 알고 있는 듯하다. 특히 식물의 일부를 확대한 듯한 보다 구성적이고 추상적인 이미지들에게서는 필력의 강함과 약함의 유려한 조절이 돋보이며, 그로 인해 생명력, 그러나 그 유한함이 주는 서로 다른 감정과 기운들이 보는 이에게 강하게 전달된다. 이로써 윤석원이 그려내는 마른 식물은 우리 앞에 현전하며 다시금 그 '존재'를 발현하기 시작한다. ■ 정소라

Living Things ● The 'Dry Plants' series contains Yoon Suk-One's warm gaze towardsthe 'being' and the 'world' surrounding him. The artist discovers the fate of a finite life from the outward appearance of plants that have dried after water has evaporated. The artist realizes the principles of life and reads out erased pasts from the temporality of flowers and trees that are the most ordinary and trivial objects. As one life is born, it foretells its extinction. The living thing with its own cycle is placed on various layers of force. The intervention of force added to these beings varies from natural phenomena such as gravity, pressure and climate to wars and disasters arising from human desires.The artist observes various aspects of life that originate from the natural and social environment surrounding the "being", and through this, he has an insight into the meanings inherent in life. Above all, the process of observation and insight results from attitude with comfort and compassion for 'being.' ● The dried plants that we meet in Yoon Suk-One's works are objects that we can easily face in surrounding environments. These objects hide inward and downward, instead of reaching outward and toward the sunlight as they could be seen on a sunny summer's day. It would be hard to express colorfulness with these objects. However, the artist decides to show more than extinction and disappearance through the appearance of these dried plants. Through the reflection of light and movement of wind, he shows delicate changes of color and shape and also simultaneously depicts the disappearance and vitality mixed in and out of a single life being. As a result, the artist approaches the specific shape of "life" and "being"that contains different energy, past, present, and future. As a newborn life accompanies its extinction, an extinction also leads to the creation of another new life.From the dried figure of a plant facing winter, the artist seems to have realized that the affection and sacrifice of one being for another is the source of this enduring vitality. ● The themes and messages that he intends to draw out are strongly illuminated through the medium of painting. The most primitive and simple media in contemporary times in addition to the skills and labor of hands that deal with it, effectively approach the source of "being".Through the primary gestures of the hand, "being" is uncoveredin front of our eyes. The artist already seems to understand that the best way to express "being" that has the two sides of life and extinction is to use simple yet complex outline, light, and subtle changes of chromatic colors depicting the dried plants, completely filling up the huge canvas.Especially from the more structured and abstract images of what seems to look like enlarged parts of the plant, we can see the smooth control of the brushing, sometimes strong and sometimes weak. The viewers are able to intensely take in the vitality and also the finite emotions and energy within.
