'유토피아(Utopia)'는 사전적 의미로 그리스어의 '없는(ou-)'과 '장소(toppos)'라는 두 말을 결합하여 만든 용어로 현실세계에 존재하지 않는 장소를 뜻한다. 이를 우리는 '이상향' 이라 해석하기도 하며 '낙원'과 유사한 개념으로도 사용하고 있다. 현대 과학기술의 발전은 그 누구도 예측하기 어려울 만큼 빠른 속도로 변화하고 있는데, 현대인들은 이러한 변화가 우리를 유토피아로 인도할 수 있을 것이라 기대한다. 그리고 이와는 정반대로 인류를 디스토피아로 인도할 것이라는 우려 또한 동시에 가지고 있다. ● 예술에 기술을 더한 미디어아트는 실재하지는 않지만 마치 존재하는 것 같은 상황을 만들어내기도 하고, 실재하지만 전혀 존재하지 않을 것만 같은 상황을 연출하기도 한다. 미디어아트는 관객들이 현실과 가상공간, 그리고 시간과 공간을 넘나들 수 있게 한다. 이번 전시에 참여한 작가들은 빛과 영상, 설치 작품을 통해 이주민 문제, 기후변화에 따른 환경 문제 등 현재는 물론 미래에 직면할 수 있는 다양한 이슈들까지 다루고 있다. ● 불과 몇 년 전까지만 해도 아날로그 시대를 살았지만 이제는 급변하는 디지털 정보화 시대를 살고 있는 우리들에게 이번 전시는 상징과 은유, 역설의 방식을 통해 진정한 유토피아는 어떤 세상인지, 그리고 진정한 행복은 무엇인지를 묻고 생각해보게 한다. ■ 광주시립미술관

The dictionary definition of Utopia combines the Greek ou-, meaning absence, and toppos, which means place, to refer to a place that does not exist in reality. The Korean word for it is isang-hyang, and we often use it as a concept similar to paradise. Contemporary science and technology are improving at a rapid pace defying our predictions, and today's people anticipate that such changes will guide us to Utopia. Simultaneously, there are concerns that, contrary to this, these will lead humanity to Distopia. ● Media art, in which technology is added to art, creates situations that do not actually exist but feel like they would, while also producing situations that actually exist but feel like they would not. Media art allows viewers to move between reality and virtual spaces, and between different spaces and time. The current exhibiting artists are dealing with current issues, such as issues of migration and climate change, as well as various potential issues through light, video and installation pieces. ● To we, who were living in an analog age just years ago but are now living in a rapidly changing digital information era, this exhibition asks and causes us to think about what kind of world true Utopia might be, and what true happiness is; through the methods of symbolism, metaphor and irony. ■ GWANGJU MUSEUM OF ART
