사색의 시간 Time of Contemplation

나는 삶의 곁에서 발견한 소박한 자연에서 휴식을 구한다. 작은 숲 속에서 발견한 나뭇가지들의 소리가 나에게 주는 기쁨을 찾아서 그 곁을 맴돌며 휴식을 구한다. 하루가 다되고 이 작은 숲의 찬란한 색들이 석양으로 인해 탈색될 때, 이것은 내게 또 다른 인상으로 다가온다. 부피가 빠진 만큼이나 더욱 분명해 지는 나무의 실루엣은 시간이 지날 수록 점차 명징해지고, 그것은 이내 내면의 숲으로 다시 자라난다. 처음 만났던 나무들의 다양한 음향들은 선이 만드는 하나의 것으로 정제된다. 선으로 남겨진 세계에서 발견하는 하나의 담백한 음향을 담아내기 위해서 나는 나무들을 그림으로 옮겨간다. 순백의 표면 위에 그려진 깨끗한 선들로 구성된 진실된 세계. 이제 하얀 비단은 맑은 하늘이 되고 날 선 획은 명백한 먹빛의 세계를 담는다. 나무의 형상들은 여전히 남겨졌으나 압축된 이 자연을 고요히 바라본다.

감추어진 세계는 현실의 것과는 다르다. 세밀한 형상이 담긴 무색의 풍경은 현실에서 한발 물러서고, 사유의 여백을 만든다. 사실적인 그림이면서 동시에 사유의 차원에 접근하기 위해, 나는 진한 농묵으로 무수한 획을 긋는다. 나무의 실루엣과 여러 겹으로 겹쳐진 이파리와 세밀한 가지들을 따라서 수많은 필획들이 존재를 쫓아 지나가고, 결국 세밀함을 지니면서도 동시에 정제된 새로운 세계를 형성한다. 나무의 형상은 실제 대상을 보는 것을 초월하여 더욱 사실적으로 묘사되어있지만, 나무의 구조, 색감이나 원근감은 모두 사라지고 진한 먹빛 안에 감추어져 있다. 이처럼 한발 물러섰다가 다시 발견되는 세계는 소박한 놀라움을 만들어 낸다. 실루엣만이 남겨진 세계, 평면적이고 압축된 이 세계는 우리의 바쁜 마음이 쉬다 갈 사색의 숲으로 다시 자라난다. 나는 이와 같이 그려진 마음의 숲길에서 또 한번 서성여본다. ■ 김종규

I seek rest from simple nature found inside daily life. Discovering sounds from branches within the small forest and following the joy they give me, I linger around them, pursuing rest. When the day is done, and this small forest's vibrant colours become bleached by sunset, this change comes to me as another impression. Along with losing mass, the silhouettes of the trees become more defined and crisp; soon after, an internal forest starts to grow. Diverse sounds from the first encountered trees are refined by the stroke lines into one. In an effort to hold the one clean sound found in the world left by lines, I transfer the trees into my paintings. The genuine world comprised of clean lines exists on the pure white surface. Now, the white silk becomes the clear sky, and the crisp strokes of lines retain the world of distinct ink shades. Shapes of the trees are still preserved but compact. I gaze at this nature in silence. ● The hidden world is different from the real world. A monochrome landscape containing detailed shapes takes a step back from reality, making room for contemplation. To reach the depths of the mind while keeping a figurative image, I endlessly stroke lines with a thick black ink. Chasing the tree's silhouette, layered leaves, and delicate branches, countless strokes pass by, eventually forming a detailed, refined world. Even though the depiction of the tree's figure has exceeded what the naked eye can see, the structure, colour, and depth of the tree are all lost and hidden inside the potent black ink. The world from a step back and then rediscovered generates quiet astonishment. In only the silhouette, flat and condensed, the world grows to become a forest of thoughts where our busy hearts can rest a while. I linger in this painted forest path just once more. ■ KIMJONGKYU
