바라보다 Looking

빛을 주제로 작업해온 두 작가의 만남은 새롭다. 전혀 다른 매체로 작업하는 그들은 빛으로 사유하며 소통한다. 빛과 공간, 상이한 매체가 함께하는 전시를 생각하며 두 작가를 떠올리게 되었고, 이상진의 조명과 정보영의 그림이 이루는 조화를 기대하며 두 작가에게 조심스레 전시를 제안했다. 서로 다른 매체에 대해 열려있는 두 작가의 긍정적인 반응으로 전시를 진행하게 되었다. 이제 새로운 경험을 공유하려 한다. ● 정보영은 실내에 들어오는 자연의 빛이나 밤하늘의 짙푸른 야광과 함께 인공의 빛인 촛불, 스탠드의 빛을 중첩시키곤 한다. 정보영의 「바라보다」는 창문을 경계로 밝은 외부의 빛과 어두운 실내의 대비가 엄숙하다. 작은 화면에 압도적으로 자리 잡은 집모양의 조명을 바라보는 화면 밖의 시선이 있다. 시선은 조명을 향해 가까이 다가가 있다. 격자문 밖의 이성적인 하얀 자연광과는 대조적으로 조명은 어두운 실내 공간을 따스하게 밝혀준다. 조심스레 자신을 밝히는 빛으로 드러나는 바닥의 얼룩진 일렁임은 조용한 대기의 움직임을 암시한다. 작품「먼, 혹은 가까운」에는 밤하늘에 희미하게 퍼지는 신비한 푸른 광을 배경으로 멀리서 작은 램프들이 힘겹게 빛을 밝히고 있다. 자연의 빛은 이성적이고 범접하지 못하는 위엄을 가진 빛으로 그려진다. 반면 실내의 빛과 램프의 빛의 온도는 따스하고 가냘픈 떨림이 있다. 외로운 섬과도 같은 램프의 빛은 자연 앞에서 지극히 작은 존재이다. 정보영의 사실적인 그림에서 인지되는 초현실적인 분위기는 이러한 빛의 중첩에서 만들어지는 듯하다. ● 이상진의 시각은 자유롭다. 사물을 '다르게 보기'에서 출발하여 일상적인 사고에서 벗어나 의외의 방향으로 접근한다. 그는 LED를 이용하여 디지털화한 작업을 선보이고 있으며, 기성 제품을 이용해 작업하기도 한다. 예를 들어 지퍼를 이어 붙여 램프를 만든다거나 플라스틱 소쿠리를 케이블 타이로 연결해 다양한 형태의 램프나 가구를 만들기도 한다. 플라스틱 빨대나 화분, 알루미늄 호일 등은 그의 호기심을 자극하고 실현하는 재미있는 소재들이다. 이번 전시에서 보여주는 'Book Rest Lamp'는 잠들기 전 읽고 난 책을 올려놓을 수 있다. 읽던 페이지를 표시해 둘 필요 없이 그대로 얹어 놓으면 된다. 책을 올려 지붕을 만들어 비로소 디자인이 완성되는 램프는 우리의 일상적 삶과 소통한다. 'Book Rest Lamp'는 다양한 크기와 형태로 제작되어 설치된다. 각각 램프 용도로도 쓰이지만 장소에 따라 조합을 달리하여 조형적인 설치물을 구성한다. 이상진은 자신의 작업에 사용자의 용도나 기호에 따라 다르게 해석할 수 있는 여지를 남겨둔다. ● 순수회화와 실용적인 디자인이 함께하는 전시 『바라보다』를 통해 서로를 바라보고 받아들이며 서로에 대한 인식을 넓혀나가는 계기가 되길 바란다. ● 화면 밖에 머무는 시선은 공간 안의 조명을 멀리서 혹은 가까이서 바라보고 있다. ■ 조정란

2004년 시작한 「Book Rest Lamp」는 책이 잠시 휴식하는 공간이다. 잠들기 전에 책을 읽다가 책을 조명 위에 살포시 얹으면 그 지붕이 완성된다. 그리고 우리가 잠들 때 조명과 함께 책도 휴식을 취한다. 그동안 반투명 유리와 아크릴로만 제작되었던 「Book Rest Lamp」는 이번 전시에서 하프미러, 컬러 아크릴, 3D 프린팅 그리고 LED 등 다양한 재료와 방식을 실험한다. 이 「Book Rest Lamp」는 2009년부터 영국의 'Suck UK'사에서 생산 판매하고 있다. 또한 한 권의 책을 위한 휴식공간이던 이 'Book Rest' 시리즈는 이번 전시를 통해 더 많은 책들이 거주 할 수 있는 「Book Rest II」로 확장된다. 책이나 CD를 꽂아 놓을 수 있는 이 집/조명 「Book Rest II」는 구조의 크기, 비례, 재질 및 색상을 다양화하고 LED광원과 스위치 방식을 새롭게 디자인했다. ■ 이상진

텅 빈 공간 혹은 사물에 드리워지는 빛, 시간에 따른 대기 색조의 변화만큼 그리기에 대한 충동을 주는 요소는 없었다. '빛을 그린다는 것은 동시에 그림자를, 그림자를 그린다는 것은 동시에 빛을 그린다는 것이다.' 오랜 시간 빛을 그려온 지금, 지극히 근본적이고 자명한 이 문구를 떠올리게 된다. ■ 정보영

The two artists whose works focus on the subject of light meet in a new way. While they work with completely different mediums, they think and communicate through light. The two artists came to mind as I began conceptualizing an exhibition integrating light, space and different mediums, and proposed the idea of the exhibition to two artists, Sang Jin Lee and Jeong, Bo Young , greatly anticipating a harmonious integration of Lee's lights and Jeong's paintings. The exhibition is an outcome of positive responses of the two artists who are open to different mediums, and aspire to share this new experience with the audience. ● In her painting, Jeong overlaps artificial light such as candlelight and stand with natural light that penetrates indoors or the dark blue light of the night sky. In Looking, the bright external light beyond the windows creates a stark contrast with the dark indoors. The gaze from outside of the surface rests on the house-shaped lights that dominate the small surface. The gaze approaches close to the light. Juxtaposing with the logical white natural light outside the lattice door, light warmly illuminates the dark interior space. The subtly rolling waves of light on the ground hint at the quite movement of the still atmosphere. In Far, or Near, small lamps struggle to light up from a distance in the backdrop of mysterious bluish light, spreading dimly in the night sky. Natural light is portrayed as being of reason, unapproachable and dignified. On the other hand, artificial indoor light and lamp is warm in temperature and has a slight tremor. Like a lonely island, the lamp light is incredibly insignificant in front of nature. The sense of surrealism in Jeong's realistic paintings seems to be generated by such overlapping of light. ● Sang Jin Lee's gaze is unhindered. Starting with looking at objects 'differently', he deviates from conventional ideas and thoughts and approaches them from unexpected angles. His digitalized works using LED sometimes also apply ready-made products such as linking zippers to create a lamp or making various shapes of lamps or furniture by tying plastic baskets together with cables. Objects like plastic straws, flower pots and aluminum foil are fascinating subjects that stir up his curiosity and imagination. Shown in this exhibition, Lee's 'Book Rest Lamps' are designed to hold books one puts down before going to sleep. There is no need to mark the page where one left off, and the fact that the design of the lamp is complete when the book is put down on it to make its roof makes it a work of design that communicates with our everyday life. Book Rest Lamps are custom made in diverse sizes and shapes. While they're put in various uses, their different combinations construct various sculptural installations depending on the specificity of the location. In Lee's work, there's always room for different interpretation depending on the use and taste of the user. ● A collaboration of fine art and design, the exhibition Looking offers an opportunity for the two fields to look at, embrace, and broaden understanding of each other. ● The gaze resting outside of the surface is looking at the light inside, from afar or near. ■ Jungran Cho
