공간을 얼마나 더 늘릴 수 있어요?

공간 (space)은 물리적인 공간을 의미하기도 하지만, 디지털에서는 비물리적인, 사용 가능한 용량을 의미합니다. 이렇게 아날로그의 실제 삶에서 쓰이는 용어들이 디지털에서 사용될 때, 우리는 평소에 그것이 동일한 단어라고 여기며, 아날로그와 디지털 세상에서 서로 치환 가능한 개념이라고 생각하기 쉽습니다. 예를 들면, 홈(집/초기화면), 휴지통(물리적인 쓰레기를 버리는 쓰레기통/디지털 파일을 삭제하는 행위의 시각화), 데스크톱(탁상 위의 공간/소형 컴퓨터) 같은 단어들이 있으며, 스마트폰의 이메일 아이콘이 여전히 전통적 편지 모양이라던가, 통화 기능 아이콘이 여전히 전통적 수화기의 모양인 것 등을 들 수 있겠습니다. ● 그러나 단어의 혼용으로 인해, 의도적이지 않게 아날로그와 디지털이라는 견고한 이분법적인 세계의 경계가 재치 있게 흐려지는 일이 생기기도 합니다. 예를 들어, 최신 핸드폰의 홈버튼이 사라지면서, 사람들은 홈 화면으로 가는 방법을 다시 습득해야 했고, 이에 따라 인터넷에서'홈으로 어떻게 가요?'즉,'집'으로 가는 방법을 물어보는, 아날로그의 세상에서는 미묘하게 이상한 문장이 생겨나기도 합니다. 본 전시의 제목처럼, 스마트폰이나 랩탑의 용량을 최대한 활용하기 위해 공간(용량)을 늘리는 방법을 물어보는 일이 빈번하지만, 이를 아날로그의 세상에서 본다면, 물리적 공간 자체를 늘리려는 시도로 보여 전혀 다른 맥락이 주어지게 됩니다. ● 이번 레지던시는 이러한, 언어, 개념의 공유로 인해 같아 보이지만 결국은 미묘하게 다른 세계들의 다층적 층위 (예를 들면 지역성와 국제성, 중심과 주변, 지역과 지엽, 안과 밖, 이곳과 저곳, 과거와 현재와 같은)를 연결하는 작품들을 연구하는 레지던시 입니다. ■ 바림

'Space' means physical space, but in a digital sense, it means the amount of available storage for use. As such, when terms from analogue-real life are used in the digital realm, we tend to think that those terms are identical and see them as easily interchangeable words for both the analogue and digital worlds. For example, 'home' (house/initial screen), 'trash can' (a container of physically dumped trash/visualization of deleting digital files), or 'desktop' (working desk/personal computer) are as such, and we can also refer to the fact that the icon of an email application on a smartphone is still designed as a traditional envelope shape, while a phone calling application is still designed as a traditional telephone. ● However the mixed usage of these words sometimes unintentionally blurs the strong dichotomy of the analogue and digital worlds in a witty way. For example, the newest smartphone has removed its home button, causing us to re-learn how to reach the home screen. It gets to the point that on websites, people ask questions like 'How do I go home?,' which is a subtly weird sentence in the analogue world. Like our exhibition title, people often ask to increase the space (storage) to maximize the volume of a smartphone or laptop. Yet in the world of analogue, it gives a connotation of increasing the physical space, in the end giving the sentence a completely different context. ● In this residency, the artists have researched the works that connect these similar-looking (due to language or sharing a concept) yet subtly different worlds, such as localism and internationalism, center and margin, and local and peripheral. ■ BARIM
