본 전시는 신화, 문화 혹은 종교적으로 여성괴물으로 분류되는 메두사를 현대의 공포영화 이미지과 결합하여, 여성괴물을 제시한다. 공포영화에서 여성괴물은 구강으로 흡수되서 숙주의 배를 가르거나 숙주를 찢어서 나오는 구조이거나(원초적어머니), 초월적인 힘을 지닌 존재(마녀) 혹은 거세자(바기나덴타타, 팜므 카스트라트리스) 로 소개된다. 본 전시에서 소개되는 메두사는 남성도 여성도 아닌, 인간도 신도 동물도 아닌 형태로 중립적인 혹은 혼전의 형태로 제작될 것이다. 전시는 크게 1부와 2부로 나누어지는데, 1부에서는 메두사가 괴물로 변하게 된 계기를 영상으로 만나볼 수 있다. 그리고 2부에서 거세자 메두사를 만나 볼 수 있다. ■ 박진희

페르세우스가 메두사를 죽였을 때 그는-일반적인 생각처럼-그녀의 지배를 종식시키거나 공포스런운 힘을 파괴하지 못했다. 이후에 아테나는 방패에 메두사의 머리를 새겨 넣었다. 입을 벌린채 몸부림치는 송곳니가 날카로운 뱀들과 메두사의 거대한 이빨, 그리고 축 늘어진 혀가 완전히 다 보였다. 아테나의 목적은 남자들로 하여금 상상 속의 거세하는 어머니에게 그들이 상징적 빚을 지고 있다는 사실을 화기시키려는 것과 동시에, 그저 그들의 심장을 두려움으로 공격하려는 것이었다. 그리고 의심의 여지없이 그녀는 자신이 무엇을 하고 있는지 잘 알고 있었다. 결국, 아테나는 고대 세계의 위대한 어머니-여신이었으며, 고대전설에 따르며 지혜의 여신인 메티스의 딸이었다. 그리고 메티스의 또 다른 이름은 메두사였다. There is no original or primary gender a drag imitates, but gender is a kind of imitation for which there is no original. Said Judith Butler. Medusa is a well known female monster from Ovidius's Metamorphoses. Medusa is drawn as a victim of sexual harassment from Poseidon. In this exhibition, Medusa is presented as a neutral or hybrid creature. Medusa is neither man nor woman; neither human nor animal. This exhibition is divided in to two parts. First part of the exhibition, it demonstrates the reason that Medusa becomes a monster and in second part, it shows Medusa as a triumphant. ■ Jin He Park

When Perseus slew the Medusa he did not - as commonly thought - put an end to her reign or destroy her terrifying powers. Afterwords, Athena embossed he shield with the Medusa's head. The writhing snakes, with their fanged gaping mouths, and the Medusa's own enormous teeth and lolling tongue were on full view. Athena's aim was simply to strike terror into the hearts of men as well as reminding them of their symbolic debt to the imaginary castrating mother. And no doubt she knew what she was doing. After all, Athena was the great Mother - Goddess of the ancient world and according to ancient legend - the daughter of Metis, the goddess of wisdom, also known as the Medusa.
