인물/풍경

에이엠씨랩(AMC Lab)은 유현경과 전병구의 이인전 『인물/풍경』을 개최한다. 인물과 풍경은 가장 전통적이고 전형적인 회화의 소재이다. 수많은 작가들이 다루고 있는 소재인 만큼, 이를 어떻게 자신만의 방식으로 표현해 내느냐는 작가들에게 매우 도전적 과제이다. 이번 전시는 다소 미완성처럼 보이기도 하는 유현경의 대형 인물화와, 차분하고 담담한 전병구의 작은 풍경들을 함께 선보여 이 동시대 작가들이 어떻게 회화를 다루고 있는지 소개한다. ● 유현경(b.1985)은 인물화로 잘 알려진 작가이다. 유현경은 풍경, 사물 등 다양한 소재를 그려 왔지만, 직접 일반인 모델을 보고 그리는 대형 초상화가 많은 주목을 받았다. 인물들마다 가지고 있는 서로 다른 특징들은 작가에게 항상 새롭고 재미있는 요소이다. 모델을 마주한 채 그림을 그리는 행위에서 작가는 종종 긴장감을 느끼며, 모델과의 관계에 따라 그림을 그리다가 절망하기도, 희열을 느끼기도 한다. 이번 전시에서 소개되는 다섯 점의 작품 중 세 점은 모델의 이름을 제목으로 붙인, 모델 개개인의 성격을 강하게 드러내는 작품들이다. 다소 엉성하게 보이는 붓질은 캔버스를 꽉 채운 얼굴이나 몸이 줄 수 있는 위협을 반감시키며 관객에게 작품을 자세히 관찰할 수 있는 여지를 남긴다. 「윤지」의 걸터앉은 포즈에서 강인함과 긴장감을 함께 느낄 수 있지만, 흐릿한 모델의 표정을 읽는 것은 오롯이 관객의 몫이다. 어렴풋이 얼굴의 실루엣만 표현된 「소라#2」 역시 관객이 해석할 여지가 많이 남아있다. 독일 레지던시 시절에 그린 「요한나」는 작품 제목과 머리 색에서 외국인이라는 점만을 추측할 수 있을 뿐이다. 이에 반해, 「차분한 사람」과 「정치인B」는 특정 인물이 아닌 '차분한'이라는 형용사와 '정치인'이라는 명사를 통해서 일반적으로 통용되는 인간의 전형적인 특성을 나타내고 있다.

전병구(b.1985)의 풍경화는 전통적인 방식에서의 풍경화와 사뭇 다르다. 과거, 작가들이 야외로 나가서 보이는 풍경을 캔버스에 담았다면, 현대의 작가들은 다양한 방식으로 소재를 찾는다. 전병구 역시 그러하다. 일상에서 포착한 장면, 영화의 인상적인 장면, SNS상에서 마주친 이미지 등 다양한 경로를 통해 수집한 이미지들을 저장해 놓았다가 회화로 표현한다. 밤의 찻길, 주차장, 동네 뒷산의 나무, 어디선가 날아온 새 등 창 밖을 쳐다보면 바로 보일 것같이 익숙한 풍경들이 작은 크기의 캔버스 위에 차분하고 담담하게 펼쳐진다. 이런 풍경은 너무 일상적이라 오히려 회화로 만난다는 것이 어색하기도 하다. 그냥 지나쳐도 이상하지 않을 만큼 별 특색 없는 밋밋한 풍경을 관찰자적 시점으로 담아내는 작가의 시선은 일관되게 중립적이다. 흔히 유화가 주는 묵직함이 전혀 없이 수채화 같이 가볍고 산뜻하게 표현된 전병구의 작품에는 특유의 스산함이 깃들어 있다. 이번 전시에서는 작가가 2015년부터 올해까지 작업한 최근작들을 선보인다. ■ AMC Lab, Contemporary Art Gallery

AMC Lab presents FIGURE/LANDSCAPE by two Korean artists, YOU Hyeonkyeong and Byungkoo JEON. Figures and landscapes are the most classic and traditional subject matter for painters. Thus, coming up with a unique way to create figure/landscape paintings has always been a fundamental challenge for artists. This exhibition presents YOU Hyeonkyeong's large figure paintings, which have an unfinished quality, and Byungkoo JEON's small landscape paintings, which are calm and placid. ● YOU Hyeonkyeong (b. 1985) is well known for her human figure paintings. She has ordinary persons pose for her, rather than professional models, so her work has been receiving much attention. YOU is fascinated by the distinctive characteristics of individuals and she enjoys observing people. Through the act of painting while directly facing her models, she often experiences feelings of tension. While painting, she sometimes feels frustrated or excited, according to her relationship with her models. This show presents five of the artist's figure paintings. Three of them are entitled with the models' names and each strongly reveals the model's character. Seemingly loose brushstrokes can make viewers feel less intimidated by a large-sized face or body that takes up the whole canvas. This also gives the audience room to observe the paintings in detail. In Yoonji, the model's pose of perching aside expresses the strength and, at the same time, the tension of the model. However, her facial expression is blurry, so interpreting that expression is left solely to the viewer. In Sora #2, a vaguely depicted face silhouette also provides much room for interpretation by its audience. In Johanna, which she created during her residency program in Germany, we can only guess that the model is a westerner based on the title and her yellow hair. By contrast, neither calm Person nor politician B is entitled with the name of a specific person. With the adjective "calm" and the noun "politician," these works capture the typical human characters as they are commonly understood. ● Byungkoo JEON (b.1985) creates landscape paintings unlike the traditional ones we are familiar with. In the past, artists would go outside and paint the landscape they observed. However, contemporary artists find their subject matter in various ways, and so does JEON. He archives diverse images through many ways, such as capturing what he encounters in his daily life, taking memorable scenes from the movies, or saving impressive pictures from Social Network Service, and he then plans each painting based on those images. The scenery that we might see through windows in any time at any place – a driveway at night, parking lots, trees on the hill at the back of the village, or some bird that has flown down to the ground from somewhere – these are calmly presented on his small canvases. Because the landscape JEON creates looks so familiar to us, we might feel awkward when faced with such ordinary scenes as paintings. JEON's viewpoint is consistently neutral; from a completely observer's point of view, he paints a scene that looks so anonymous that nobody would pay attention to it if it were in the real world. His oil paintings are light and simple, like watercolor paintings, and do not have the weighty touch that is often found in oil paintings. JEON's works give viewers dreary and lonesome feelings. This exhibition features his works from 2015 onwards.
