수직과 대각선의 철제 케이블 너머로 보이는 마천루 빌딩들, 교각 아래로 흐르는 이스트 강 물결과 분주한 항만의 풍경, 거대한 철제 기둥으로 가로질리는 상공. 1929년 워커 에반스(Walker Evans, 1903-1975)는 맨하튼 남단과 브루클린을 잇는 최초의 철제 케이블 현수교인 브루클린 브릿지(Brooklyn Bridge)의 모습을 9장의 사진으로 남겼다. 그 가운데 미국 대공황의 우울한 단면을 드러내듯 고개를 푹 숙이고 고단하게 벤치 위에 앉아 잠든 남성의 모습은 1950년대 전후의 우울한 서울 풍경을 담아낸 임응식의 '구직(求職)'과도 닮아있다.

8년이라는 기간 동안, 4시간 가량의 장노출로 뉴욕 곳곳의 모습을 아련하게 담아낸 김준표의 사진은 보는 이로 하여금 100년 전쯤의 뉴욕 거리를 거니는 듯한 착각을 불러일으킨다. 19세기 말에서 20세기 초반, 파리의 거리와 상점들을 하나하나 담담히 기록해 내었던 프랑스의 사진작가 으젠느 앗제(Eugene Atget, 1857~1927)를 무척이나 흠모한다는 그답다.

한편 20여년 전, 왕복 비행기표만 달랑 들고 뉴욕을 향해 패기 어린 여행을 떠났던 젊은 날 신미식의 흑백 사진에는 이방인만의 짙은 쓸쓸함과 불안감이 서려있다. 그의 사진 속에 담긴 세계 무역 센터(the World Trade Center) 쌍둥이 빌딩은 2001년의 9.11 화염 속에 사라지고 없다. 사진은 그렇다. 그 속성상 찍는 순간 바로 과거가 되고 마니, 엄밀히 말한다면 모두 다 가짜다. 그렇다면 이번엔 '진짜 가짜'를 한번 만나볼까?

김호성은 실제 뉴욕에는 한 번도 가보지 않았으나, 구글 다운로드를 통해 활기찬 동시대 뉴욕 거리의 모습을 누구보다 생생하게 담아냈다. 김지혜는 마치 다가올 멋진 신세계를 보여주듯 작가의 상상 속 도시의 모습을 형형색색으로 재현해 내었다. ● 당신은 뉴욕에 가보았는가? 그렇다면 이 도시의 어디를, 어떻게 추억하는가. 혹은 아직 가보지 못하였는가? 그렇다면 상상 속의 뉴욕을 어떻게 그려보는가. Art Space J 는 2018년의 끝자락, 과거의, 현재의, 혹은 미래의 뉴욕의 모습을 담아낸 작가들의 작품과 함께 대형 맨하튼 지도와 핀을 전시장 한 벽면에 준비하였다. 뉴욕의 여러 풍경들을 음미하며, 준비된 지도에 내 마음 속 뉴욕을 pin point하며 자신만의 뉴욕을 더듬어보는 시간을 가져보는 것은 어떨까. 더불어 전시장에 비치될 뉴욕의 과거와 현재를 살펴볼 수 있는 사진집과 잡지들은 뉴욕을 향하는 당신의 상상여행에 친절한 동반자가 되어줄 것이다. ■ 아트스페이스 J

Skyscrapers over the cables going in multitude of directions, waves of the East River, the busy harbor, and gigantic iron poles in the sky. Walker Evans (1903-1975) left nine photographic works of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge which connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. The image of the sleeping man on a bench which reveals the down spirit of the Great Depression reminds us of Eung-Sik Yim's work "Goo Jik (job-hunting)," which portrays gloomy scenes of Seoul in 1950s after the Korean War. ● Eight years of Joon-Pyo Kim's photographic works which were taken with four long hours of exposure capture faint images of New York, and you feel as though you are strolling in the city in the pre-war era. In these works, you can get a glimpse of Kim's admitted admiration for the French photographer Eugene Atget (1857-1927) who photographed the streets of Paris. ● Twenty years ago, an ambitious young man, Mi-Sik Shin, went to New York with just a round-trip ticket in his hands. In his black and white photography, one may feel the artistic wanderer's anxiety and loneliness. His images include the World Trade Center which has disappeared in the flames of 9/11 terrorist attacks. ● In fact, photographic works are all illusory, since any image captured in one particular moment is no longer present. They lie to you, the viewers, in convincing you that those images are actually there when that particular moment is gone forever. Two additional photographers lie in their own artistic ways: Ho-Sung Kim has never been to New York, and makes use of Google downloads to capture vivid images of the city today while Ji-Hae Kim recreates her imaginations of the future of the city. ● Have you been to New York?
