두 개의 원 Two Circles

두 개의 원, 하나의 광경 ● 장은의(Unui Jang)는 지난 몇 년간 일상의 사물과 풍경을 그린 회화 작업을 통해 사람 그리고 사람들 간의 관계에 대해 이야기 해오고 있다. 사소해서 지나쳐버릴 수 있는, 때로는 낯설게 느껴지는 주변의 사물과 풍경들을 사진으로 기록하고 그것을 다시 회화로 옮긴다. 작가는 최근에 '두 개의 원'을 작품의 주제로 삼고 있는데, 이것 역시 같은 맥락에 놓여 있다. 접시나 잔 위에 포도, 토마토, 사과와 같은 과일을 하나 또는 여러 개를 배열하여 그림으로써 인공적인 원과 자연적인 원 간의 대면을 시도한다. 이렇게 등장하는 다른 두 차원의 원, 어떤 의미에서 완벽한 원과 완벽하지 않은 원, 이 둘은 서로 대립하는 동시에 조화를 이루며 고요한 긴장감을 형성한다. 두 개의 원은 서로 다른 차원, 다른 세계에 속하면서도, 아름답게 공존한다. 즉 하나의 완전한 사물이자 하나의 이상적인 광경으로 다가온다. 두 개의 원은 하나의 광경 속에서 계속해서 부딪히고 서로를 밀어낸다. 결코 그것들은 완전하게 동일하지 않기 때문이다. 그러나 그것은 결합과 공존이라는 더 큰 영역 안에 존재함으로써 확장된 형태와 의미를 지속적으로 낳는다. ● 장은의의 작업, 두 개의 원은 서로 다른 것의 결합과 공존으로 이루어진 인간과 세계의 존재 방식을 은유한다. 서로 다른 세계에 속한 인공적인 원과 자연적인 원이 자아내는 긴장과 조화는 나와 타인, 나와 사물, 나와 세계가 하나의 직물(fabric)처럼 얽혀 있기에 개별적이지만 전체이며, 하나이면서 하나이지 않은 관계를 이야기 한다. 이러한 작품 속에 내재된 의미들은 파스텔톤의 하늘색 배경과 하얀색의 접시, 그리고 그 위에 놓인 선명하면서도 투명한 색채의 과일을 배치하는 형식에서도 기인한다. 장소를 가늠할 수 없는 추상적 배경과 과일이라는 구체적 형상의 만남, 두터운 물감의 두께를 갖지 않으면서도 물성을 느끼게 하는 특유의 붓질 등 여러 구성 및 채색 기법은 전체적으로 정지되어 있으면서도 부유하는 듯한 신비한 느낌을 주며, 서로 다른 두 세계의 공존을 더욱 효과적으로 보여주게 한다. ● 전시 공간인 카이스트 대학의 대형 홀은 사람들이 계속해서 통행하는 일상적인 공간이라는 본연의 기능을 가지고 있다. 그렇기에 일반적으로 이곳에서의 전시 속 작품들은 공적이면서 열린 공간 속에 놓이며 관람자의 경험을 기다리게 된다. 이번 전시에서 작가는 작품이 걸리게 될 전시장 벽에서 일정거리 떨어진 곳에 반투명 천으로 만든 가벽을 설치함으로써 기존의 전시 공간을 공적이면서도 사적인, 열려있으면서도 닫혀 있는 구조로 변형시킨다. 관람자들은 가벽이 만드는 제한된 동선을 따라 일종의 통로이자 새로운 전시공간으로 들어서게 될 때, 상대적으로 개인적이면서 특별한 경험의 시간을 갖게 된다. 이러한 설치 방식과 새로운 공간의 창조는 작품에서 말하고 있는 서로 다른 것의 공존을 연상시킨다. ● 삶을 형성하는 여러 원리 중에서 공존은 이상적인 측면을 함의한다. '원'에도 수많은 다른 원들이 존재하듯이, '사물'에는 수많은 다른 사물들이 있고, '인간'에는 수많은 다른 인간들이 존재한다. 다름과 차이는 사물과 인간을 존재하게 해주는 근본적인 이치이자 토대이다. 하나가 있기에 다른 하나가 존재할 수 있고, 다른 하나는 하나가 있기에 존재할 수 있다. 서로 다른 것은 서로를 가능하게 해주는 원인이며 그 결과이기도 하다. 장은의의 작업은 서로 다른 것 간의 공존을 감각적인 시각화를 통해 미학적으로 제시함으로써 우리가 살아가는 삶과 그 속에 스며든 여러 관계들을 관찰하고 명상할 수 있도록 한다. ■ 정소라

Two Circles, One Sight ● Unui Jang has been illustrating the relationship between people through paintings of ordinary objects and landscapes over the past few years. The artist photographs surrounding objects and landscapes which are sometimes trivial and often unfamiliar, and then re-illustrates them into paintings. In similar context, she focuses on 'two circles' as the theme of her recent works. She puts one or more circular fruits such as grapes, tomatoes, and apples on a plate or a glass, and makes the artificial circles and natural circles confront face-to-face. The two circles in two different dimensions, the perfect circle and the incomplete circle, both form a harmonious and serene tension. The two circles coexist beautifully while belonging to different dimensions and different worlds. They become one complete object and one ideal sight. The two circles also continue to collide and push away each other because they are not completely identical. However, they continue to produce expanded forms and meanings by existing in a larger realm of unity and coexistence. ● Unui Jang's work "Two circles" is a metaphor for the way humans and the world exist, how it is made up of the combination and coexistence of different things. The tension and harmony of artificial circles and natural circles belonging to different worlds expresses how "self" is intertwined with others like one fabric and therefore how it becomes individual yet whole in a single yet multiple relationship. The intrinsic meanings of these works are also attributed to the arrangement of pastel tones of the light blue background, white plates, and the crisp, transparent colors of the fruit on top of them. Various compositions and coloring methods such as combining the abstract background with the specific shape of the fruits, and using unique brushing effects that does now show the thickness of the material are used to give a mysterious feeling as if floating and to more effectively show the coexistence of two different worlds. ● The exhibition space in the large hall of KAIST College of Business carries its original function of a daily space where people continue to pass. Therefore, in general, the works exhibited in this space are located in a public and open area, waiting for the experience of the audience. In this exhibition, the artist transforms the existing exhibition space into a public yet private, open yet closed structure by installing a transparent wall made of translucent cloth at a distance from the wall of the exhibition space. The audience will have a relatively personal and special experience when they enter the new exhibit space through the new passage along the limited movement of the wall. This method of installation and creation of a new space reminds us of the "coexistence" continuously illustrated in the artist's works. ● Among the many principles in life, "coexistence" implies an ideal aspect. As there are numerous different 'circles', there exist numerous different 'objects', and there are numerous different 'human beings.' Difference and distinction are the fundamental reason and foundation of the existence of objects and humans. One exists because there is another "one", and the other one can exist because there is yet another "one". Difference in each "one" is the reason why one can exist and also its result. Unui Jang's works aesthetically present the coexistence of different things through sensuous visualization so that we can observe and meditate on the lives we live in and the various relationships that permeate them. ■ Sola Jung
