사색이 주는 정신적 자유 ● 우리는 현실에서 부딪히는 여러 가지 문제들로 인해 심리적인 불안함을 느낄 때가 많다. 잠시 일상과 떨어져 한적한 숲이나 산책로를 걷다보면 이내 복잡한 마음이 안정되는 경험은 누구에게나 있을 것이다. 이처럼 자연으로부터의 치유는 우리에게 삶의 고난을 극복하고 새로운 세계를 열어갈 힘을 제공한다. 작가는 자연 안에서 자유로워지는 순간을 느끼며 동양의 이상주의를 대표하는 소요유(逍遙遊)를 떠올린다. 구름으로 이상세계를 상징화하고 동양화의 전통을 이어 화면에 사군자를 그려넣음으로써 그 의미를 현대적으로 재해석하고 작품으로 실현하고자 한다. ● 이상향의 추구는 동서양을 불문하고 꾸준하게 지속되어 온 중요한 예술 창작의 주제이다. 특히 동양에서의 예술 정신은 자연과 내가 하나가 되는 이상 세계를 표현하고자 하는 것이다. 다시 말해서 자연을 거닐 수 있는 공간을 표현하여 정신을 자유롭게 하는 데에 그 목적을 두고 있다고 할 수 있다. 이처럼 도가사상에서 장자가 말하는 소요유는 슬슬 노니며 거니는 것을 의미한다. 여기에는 단순히 한가로운 산책의 뜻을 넘어서 어떠한 것에도 얽매이지 않는 자유와 해방에 도달한 경지를 담고 있다. 이러한 정신적 소요의 즐거움을 표현하기 위하여 박소영은 구름 속에서 느낄 수 있는 꿈같은 상상을 수묵으로 담는다. 작가에게 작품은 곧 사유를 통해 자신만의 이상향을 세우고 현실 속에서 지친 마음의 위안을 얻는 공간이다. 이상적인 세계를 표현하기 위한 소재로 형상이 없는 구름을 소재로 선택하고 사군자를 의미하는 매화, 난초, 대나무, 국화가 가진 자연의 이미지를 겹쳐 사색을 통한 정신적 자유를 향한 내적 욕구를 투사하여 표현한다.

동양화의 정신은 모든 사물을 표면적으로만 바라보지 않고 마음의 눈을 통해 우주와 자연의 섭리를 인식하는 것이다. 사군자가 가진 선의 움직임만으로 자연의 신비와 아름다움을 관조하는 작가의 감정이 표출된다. 붓질에서 볼 수 있는 무작위의 행위는 인간이 자연과 합일을 이루려는 회화적 구현이라고 볼 수 있다. 여기에는 단순한 재현에 그치는 것이 아니라 작가만의 자연에 대한 순수한 통찰력과 내면의 세계가 화면에 담겨 있다. 작품에 소요의 이미지를 표현하기 위해서 청색계열과 금색을 선택하는데 청색은 비물질적이며 정신적인 범주의 색으로 자연의 본질을 대변하는 색이다. 작가는 농담을 통해 장지 위에 원하는 정도의 번짐과 스밈을 조절하여 구름 위에 반투명한 형상의 층위들을 만들어내며 마치 무중력 상태의 우주처럼 화면 안을 부유하는 것처럼 표현한다. ● 박소영에게 예술 행위는 삶을 살아가면서 발생하는 모든 의문을 성찰하고 갈등을 해소하는 과정이라고 볼 수 있다. 동양철학에서 말하는 소요유가 가진 예술 정신을 이해하고 이를 작업의 미학적 토대로 삼아 발전 방향을 모색하고 있다. 또한 지속적인 재료와 표현에 대한 탐색을 통해 우주에 대한 명상과 사색이 주는 정신적 자유로움에 대한 내적 욕구를 작품으로 표현하고 있다. 작가는 이번 전시를 통해 현대사회에 줄 수 있는 소요의 가치를 일깨우고 감상자에게 소외와 갈등의 현실을 극복하고 자연과의 합일을 통해 내면을 치유하는 기회를 제공하고자 한다. ■ 김선재

Psychological freedom retained through contemplation ● People often feel anxiety due to the various problems faced in the real world. Everyone has had the experience of calming a restless mind after a quiet walk through a secluded forest or along passages away from everyday life. Such healing from nature provides one with the strength to overcome the hardships of life and open up to new worlds. The artist recognizes the moment of freedom found in nature and recalls So-yo-yoo, which represents idealism in Eastern philosophy. The ideal world is symbolized through clouds, and in line with the tradition of Oriental paintings, the Four Gracious Plants are drawn with its meaning reinterpreted in a modern sense. ● The pursuit of the ideal is an important theme which has been immovably prevalent in both Eastern and Western cultures. In Eastern art, especially, idealism is represented as nature becoming one with the self. In other words, the space where one can wander through nature is represented to express the freedom of the mind. As such, So-yo-yoo in Taoist thought mentioned by Jangja is the act of slowly walking in a leisurely sense. This goes beyond a simplistic leisurely stroll but the state of being not bound to anything, reaching freedom and emancipation. In order to represent such psychological enjoyment, Soyoung PARK draws out in her Korean Ink Painting a dream-like imagination walking through clouds. For the artist, the work is a space to establish one's own utopia through contemplation, and a place where the weary mind finds rest from the real world. Shapeless clouds are chosen as a medium that represents an ideal world, and the images of the Four Gracious Plants – plum, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum – are overlapped to represent freedom of mind that is retained through contemplation. ● The spirit of Oriental paintings is to recognize the providence of the universe and nature through the eyes of the mind, and not perceive objects merely from its outside. The artist's emotions contemplating the mystery and beauty of nature are expressed through the movement of the lines of the Four Gracious Plants. The random action visible through the brush strokes can be seen as a pictorial manifestation of man becoming one with nature. This is not merely a representation, but the artist's pure insights of nature and inner world that is contained in the scene. In order to express the image of So-yo-yoo blue and gold has been used, whereby blue is a color of non-materiality and spirituality which represents the essence of nature. The artist adjusts the blurring and absorption to create a translucent layer of the clouds and expresses it as though it is floating in the screen akin to zero gravity space. ● For PARK, art is the process of reflecting on all questions that arise through life and resolving conflicts. PARK understands the artistic spirit of So-yo-yoo discussed in Eastern philosophy and seeks development based on this aesthetic foundation. Furthermore, PARK continues to investigate materials and expressions to represent inner desires of psychological freedom that are achieved through meditation on space. Through this exhibition, the artist aims to awaken the value of So-yo in our modern society, and provide the viewer with the opportunity to overcome the reality of alienation and conflict, and the healing of the inner self by becoming one with nature. ■ KIMSUNJAE
