900x Magnification

"나름의 규칙으로 차분히 그려진 무의식의 드로잉은 나를 그 앞으로 한없이 가까이 끌어당긴다." ● 갤러리 수는 2018년 10월 6일부터 10월 28일까지 4개국 연합갤러리가 일년에 한 번씩 개최하는 그룹전에서 국동완 작가의 개인전을 개최한다. 전시의 타이틀 『900x Magnification』은 국동완 작가의 신작 시리즈의 제목이다. 작가는 그동안 꿈으로 대표되는 존재의 무의식에 닿는 과정을 드로잉, 책, 조각 등으로 표현해왔다. 이번 전시에서 작가는 특유의 세밀한 드로잉을 900배 확대하여 그림 밖으로 끄집어낸다. 스스로 참선이라 말하는 드로잉 방법 '회광반조(回光返照)'를 통해 건져낸 무의식에 더 가까이 다가가고자, 작가는 무수한 스케일의 실험 끝에 900배의 배율, 1cm 너비의 종이테이프, 캔버스, 아크릴 페인트를 선택했다.

국동완의 페인팅은 '그려진' 부분과 무수한 '남겨진' 선들로 이루어져 있다. 이 흰 선들은 작가의 손이 가진 그리기 습성에서 기인한 것으로, 작가는 이번 900x Magnification 시리즈를 통해 남겨진 선들을 그림으로써 그리는 행위의 전복을 시도한다. 캔버스와 종이테이프가 주고받는 탄력으로 선을 긋고, 구겨진 테이프의 빈 공간으로 통제할 수 없는 페인트의 텍스쳐를 초대한다. 확대의 대상이 된 드로잉 Decalcomanie Life, 2014 는 작가의 부모님 집과 그 옆집의 아파트 평면도를 바탕으로 한 그림으로, 집에 관련한 작가 개인의 기억과 타인의 기억이 혼재 되어있다. 이렇게 확대된 '집'에 관한 무의식의 장면들은 관람자의 발걸음을 끌어 당기는 동시에 멀어지게 하면서 전시장을 미시와 거시의 시점이 공존하는 공동의 집으로 만든다.

최근 참여한 주요 전시로는 갤러리팩토리(2011), 갤러리 조선(2016)에서 개인전을 가졌으며, 청년미술프로젝트 2016 (2016, 대구EXCO), 타이포잔치 (2015, 문화역서울), 오늘의 살롱(2014, 커먼센터) 등 다수의 전시에 참여하였다. 2012년 스코틀랜드 글렌피딕 아티스트 레지던시에 참여하였으며 현재 금천예술공장 8기 입주 작가이다. 식의 세계에서의 개념적인 현대미술에 대해 새로운 관찰을 경험해보길 바라며 갤러리 수는 앞으로도 계속해서 중국 작가들의 다양한 시도들을 소개해나갈것이다. ■ 갤러리 수

"The collective of unconsciousness calmly drawn by its own rules pulls me in front of it closer and closer." ● GALLERY SU: presents a solo exhibition of Dongwan Kook, 『900x Manigification』, from October 6 to October 28, 2018 for the annual collaborative group exhibition of four international galleries. The title of the exhibitioin 『900x Manigification』 is the same title of a new series by Dongwan Kook. The artist has been depicting the process of reaching the unconscious with a deep interest in dreams through various mediums including drawing, book, sculpture, etc. In her new series, Kook pulls out a delicate part of her own drawing work Decalcomanie Life via 900x magnification in order to draw closer to the unconscious by the artist's own drawing method, which she refers to as Zen meditation – where Kook looks back on the self by reflecting the light. After numerous experiments, the artist has chosen a 900:1 magnification ratio, a 1cm-wide paper tape, canvas, and acrylic paint as the mediums. ● Dongwan Kook's painting consists of the parts that are 'drawn' and the countless that are 'left'. These white lines derive from the artist's natural tendency with her hands. In the series '900x Magnification', Kook attempts to turn the act of drawing upside down by drawing in reverse the left lines in Decalcomanie Life. The artist draws the lines by elasticity ping-ponging between canvas and paper tapes, thus inviting uncontrollable texture of paint into the empty space within wrinkled tapes. The drawing Decalcomanie Life, the original source of magnified paintings, is based on the floor plan of apartments of her parents and of the next door, where her personal memory and the other's memory about home are coexisting. The unconscious scenes in the magnified 'home' become a communal space where microscopic and macroscopic perspectives coexist, pulling and pushing the footsteps of the viewers at the same time. ● The major exhibitions that Dongwan Kook recently participated include solo exhibitions at Gallery Factory (2011) and group exhibitions at Gallery Joseon (2016), Youth Art Project 2016 (2016, Daegu EXCO), Typo Festival (2015, Cultural Station Seoul), and Today's Salon (2014, Common Center). In 2012, the artist participated in the Glenfiddic artist residency program of Scotland, and is currently a resident artist of Geumcheon Art Factory. ■ GALLERY SU:
