파라다이스 아트 스페이스의 개관전 『無節制&節制 Overstated & Understated』는 서로 다르지만 연동되어 서로를 역동적으로 변화시키는 관계를 보여준다. 파라다이스의 소장품 중 현대미술을 대표하는 해외 작가 2인의 작품을 선보이는 상설전시실(Permanent Exhibition Hall)과 한국 미술의 전통을 현대적으로 해석한 한국 작가 2인의 작품을 선보이는 기획전시실(Special Exhibition Space1, 2)은 다른 지역, 다른 재료로 구성된 작품들의 병치를 통해 물질의 차이를 가로지르는 미적 가치를 탐구하는 공간으로 탄생하였다. ● 이번 전시에서는 현대미술을 대표하는 작품과 한국 전통 미술의 절제의 미를 보여주는 설치 작품을 함께 만나볼 수 있다. 주제와 접근방식의 차이를 뛰어넘어 전통과 현대, 자연과 인간에 대한 관심을 구현한 작품들은 관람자에게 신선한 미적 감흥을 불러일으키며, 다채로운 조형언어가 함께 만들어내는 현대미술의 미학적 표현 가능성을 탐색할 수 있는 기회를 제공하고 있다.

제프 쿤스_Gazing Ball-Farnese Hercules_2013

제프 쿤스의「Gazing Ball-Farnese Hercules」는 3세기경 아테네 출신 조각가 그리콘(Glykon)이 만든 것으로 알려진 대리석상을 모본으로 석고조각상을 만들고 상의 오른쪽 어깨 위에 파란색 유리 볼을 얹은 작품이다. 현대미술을 대표하는 작가로 손꼽히는 쿤스는 고전 조각을 대표하는 파르네스 헤라클레스상 역시 그리스 시대 청동조각상을 로마시대에 모방한 작품이라는 사실을 주목하고, 대량생산이 가능한 석고로 또 하나의 모방작을 만들었다. 전통과 현대, 원작과 모방의 관계에 대한 질문을 내포한 작품은 쉽게 부서지는 소재로 가장 힘이 세다는 신화 속 영웅을 담아냈다는 점에서 유희적인 요소를 지닌다. 뿐만 아니라 작가는 조각상 위에 반사되는 거울 표면을 가진 파란 공을 덧붙여 선명한 색에 시선을 빼앗긴 관람자의 모습이 비쳐지게 했다. 결국 작품 속에 관람객과 관람 공간이 담겨짐으로써 완성되는 쿤스의 작품은 관람객이 미술 작품 속의 자신을 관람하는 체험의 즐거움을 선사한다.

데미안 허스트_Aurous Cyanide_2016

데미안 허스트의 「Aurous Cyanide」는 새로 개관하는 파라다이스 아트 스페이스의 공간에 맞춰 작가에게 특별 주문 제작한 작품이다. 유사한 시리즈 중 가장 큰 크기(3X9m)를 가지고 있는 이 작품은 넓은 화면에 색색의 동그라미를 동일한 간격으로 반복 배치하여 스팟 페인팅(Spot Painting)으로 불린다. 죽음에 대한 성찰을 주제로 다양한 작품을 선보이는 작가는 화면 가득 그려진 동그라미로 사람들의 병을 치료하는 약물 성분들을 표현했다. 작품 제목으로 붙여진 아우러스 사이아나이드(Aurous Cyanide)는 시안화 제1금(AuCN)을 뜻하는 단어로, 연한 노란색의 판처럼 생긴 결정과 맹독성을 지닌 화합물의 명칭이다. 허스트는 금으로 된 화려한 배경에 다채로운 색의 원을 그려 넣어 경쾌한 느낌을 주는 작품에 독성 화합물을 뜻하는 제목을 붙여 삶과 죽음에 대한 주제를 역설적으로 드러냈다. 이번 전시에서는 특별히 작가가 작품을 제작하는 과정을 영상으로 소개하여 풍부한 볼거리를 제공한다.

이배_불에서부터_2018

'숯의 화가'로 한국과 프랑스를 오가며 활동하는 이배 작가는 바닥 전면에 하얀 한지를 깔고 거대한 숯 구조물을 배치했다. 흐트러진 숯가루 위에 자리잡은 검은 덩어리는 자연에서 마주친 육중한 거석(巨石)이 되어 입체적인 수묵화를 연상시킨다. 보는 각도에 따라 다채로운 검은빛을 뿜어내는 숯의 거친 표면과 은은하게 빛을 흡수하는 한지의 조합은 재료의 물성을 극대화하며 시각적 즐거움을 전달한다.

김호득_문득, 공간을 그리다_2018

작가는 넓은 직사각 수조에 먹물을 가득 담고 그 위로 하얀 한지를 늘어뜨렸다. 일정한 간격을 두고 늘어선 한지의 움직임은 살랑이는 바람의 결을 보여주고, 깊게 가라앉은 먹물의 수면은 고요한 리듬을 생성한다. 잔잔한 물결 위에 일렁이는 한지의 너울과 규칙적으로 번져나가는 검은 파동은 공기 속에서 확산되어 전시실 공간을 가득 채운다. 백색의 벽면에 일렁이는 그림자까지 작품의 일부로 의도한 작가는 공간에 발을 들인 관람객을 관조의 세계로 이끈다. ■ 파라다이스 아트 스페이스

□ 디렉터 정구호 패션 브랜드 KUHO로 이름을 알린 정구호는 그래픽 디자인, 패션 디자인, 영화 미술, 공연 미술 등 다양한 분야에서 활동하는 종합 크리에이티브 디렉터이다. 영화 『황진이』, 『스캔들』 등의 미술감독으로 제41회, 제45회 대종상 영화제에서 의상상을 수상한 바 있고, 국립발레단의 「포이즈」, 국립무용단의 「묵향」, 「향연」 등의 공연을 연출했다. 한국적인 것을 세련된 방식으로 전달하는데 관심을 두고 문화예술 전 분야에서 주목할 만한 행보를 보여주고 있다.

□ 파라다이스 아트 스페이스 2018년 9월, 새로 문을 연 파라다이스 아트 스페이스는 동북아 최초 복합리조트인 파라다이스 시티에 자리잡은 전시공간이다. 파라다이스가 수집해 온 주요 미술품을 소개하는 Permanent Exhibition Hall과 새로운 기획전시를 선보일 수 있는 Special Exhibition Space 1, 2를 갖추고 있다. 향후 다채로운 미술전시는 물론 건축, 디자인, 영화 등 문화 전반을 아우르는 볼거리를 제공할 예정이다.

Paradise Art Space inaugural exhibition 『Overstated & Understated』 demonstrates a transformative relationship of the variables that form each other through its differences. Permanent Exhibition Hall features artworks from the Paradise collection, which are by the two leading international artists that represent contemporary art. And two Korean artists who best transform traditional materials to contemporary art are showcased at Special Exhibition Space 1 and 2. Works from different origins and ingredients are juxtaposed in the space for exploration of aesthetic values that transcend objective differences. ● The exhibition presents both the leading works of contemporary art and installations that best represent Korea's traditional art theme of restraint. The works overcome the differences of topic and approach, instigate curiosity of tradition and current, nature and human, to arouse a fresh aesthetic impression. Through the harmony of formative languages, the exhibition offers the audience to explore new possibilities of contemporary art's expressions. ● Jeff Koons's 「Gazing Ball-Farnese Hercules」 is modeled after a marble statue made by Greek sculptor Glykon in the 3rd century with a blue mirror ball placed on the statue's right shoulder. Noting that the classic Farnese Hercules is modeled after a bronze statue from the Roman era, Koons creates his own series of imitations through plaster, which can be mass produced. The piece questions the relationship of tradition and modern, original and imitation, while carrying a playful twist that a material so fragile is used to portray the strongest god in mythology. Koons' work is completed with the reflections of the awed audience and exhibition space from the blue mirror ball. ● Damien Hirst's 「Aurous Cyanide」 is a special commission piece made to fit perfectly into Paradise Art Space. Largest in its series and also known as Spot Painting, the piece (3x9m) carries colorful circles with even spacing. Always exploring the topic of death, Hirst illustrates the components of drugs that cure illnesses via circles filling the canvas. Aurous Cyanide, name of the work, is equivalent to AuCN, toxic chemical that hints a yellow hue and shaped like a disc. For his colorful and cheerful artwork, Hirst names it with a toxic chemical, again exploring the paradoxical topic of life and death. The production process for the piece was specially filmed to provide another layer of viewing of the work. ● Based in both Korea and France, 'Master of Charcoal,' Lee Bae showcases a massive installation using unique placement of Korean traditional paper, hanji, and charcoal. The large black mass over disarrayed charcoal residue becomes a large natural rock, then becomes a three-dimensional ink painting. The marriage of charcoal's rough surface that emanates various shades of black and hanji's delicate texture that absorbs colors ever so subtle, maximizes the elements of the ingredients and delivers a breathtaking visual. Title 「Issu du feu」 translates, 'from the fire.' ● Kim drops the white hanji over a large rectangular bath filled with ink. Movements of hanji, placed evenly from the ceiling, show the texture of the wind, and the surface of ink creates a serene rhythm. Slow sway of hanji over the calm ink and the rhythmical waves of darkness expands through the air and fills the space. Shadows of the installation over white walls are also part of Kim's artwork, as he leads the audience into a space of meditation. ■ Paradise Art Space

□ Director, Jung Kuho Jung Kuho, widely recognized for his fashion brand KUHO, is a creative director, working in various art fields, including graphic design, fashion, film and performance. Jung was awarded as the Art Director for best costumes for movies 「Hwang jin-yi」 and 「Scandal」 in the 41st and 45th Daejong Film Award and has directed Korean National Ballet's 「Poise」 and National Dance Company of Korea's 「Scent of Ink」 and 「The Banquet」. Delivering Korean tradition with sophistication, Jung continues to make commendable achievements in the art field.

□ Paradise Art Space Opening September of 2018, Paradise Art Space is an all-encompassing exhibition space in northeast Asia's first integrated resort, Paradise City. Permanent Exhibition Hall will introduce Paradise Group's major art collections and Special Exhibition Space 1 and 2 will explore various special exhibitions. Attractions and exhibitions, over topics like architecture, design, film and culture will be presented.
