다운그레이드(Downgrade)

이번 전시에 참여한 작가 3인은, 그들 자신에게 도래하지 않은, 그러나 도래할 법한 일들, 대체로 그들이 몸담은 세대의, 어느 변방 예술계를, 상상하는 가상의 환경과 이야기를 설정하고 있다. 폐기될 법한 상상, 그로 인한 막연한 두려움, 어쩌면 일어날 디스토피아들이 그들의 작업에 담기며 이는 시간의 단선적인 흐름과는 상관없는, 디지털 상의 업&다운의 교차로서 쌓여있다. 상상된 가상의 환경은 현존하는 그들의 작품 일부에서 뉘앙스로서 존재하며, 그 상상으로부터 취하지 않은, 모종의 잔류는 그들에게 탈-선택의 다운그레이드가 된다. ● 그들 세대의 예술가에게 있어서 '특점, 스페셜 포인트'란 지워지는 것이다. 지워짐은 중이적인 표현으로, 그들 스스로 없애거나, 혹은 시스템에 의해 부여된 업데이트 하라는 의무이다. 그렇기에 판단이 유보된 동시대의 가난한 제스처 이자, 보편성보다 아래에 위치해 있다는 '다운 그레이드'는 세련됨을 애써 숨기고자 찌질을 입은 힙스러운 무언가가 아니다. 전시 '다운그레이드'는 반함의 유의미함을 재차 강조하며, 미래에 대한 불안함을 프레임 밖에서 재조정하고자 한다. ■ 김다혜

Swimming in a hodgepodge of the current and alternate universe, three artists envision abstract events that had not been arrived, or those yet to come. This thought travels far to an inadequate and frail art world elsewhere with fictional environments and narratives happening inside. The dystopian universe inside the artists' works embeds a fear that these worlds might truly happen or are perhaps put into the disposal. Time on a treadmill is put onto a halt in these dystopias. Like the high and low tides of the digital wave, the linearity is traversed. The ups and downs cross paths. These virtual environments exist as a nuance in parts of each artists' work. The rest, the residues, from an off-choice becomes a downgrade. ● Of the three participating artists' generation, the special point means to erase. The act of erasure comes from the imposed (jiwuajin) obligation by the social system, and the erased(jiun) by the artists' choice. Therefore these are indications of a poor contemporary gestures stemming out from postponed judgment. Our 'downgrade', located below the universality, is not, however, self-aware hipster dressed as a nerd to willfully hide the refined elegance. ● The exhibition "Downgrade" emphasizes the relevance of opposing and the anxiety of dystopias. Ultimately, readjusting the view of the existing world from afar, examining and observing from a 'downgrade' binoculars. ■ Ye eun Nam
